new Chris Cornell stuff

i read a really bad review of his new album in the latest rolling stone.

kind of makes me sad though.

i think he has jumped the shark though..

with covering billie jean and also the new album cover being a throwback to 60's and 70's singer songwriter album covers.

Haven't heard it yet. Waiting to hear more about it. I have a live acoustic version of Billie Jean from an acoustic show he did last September. Thought it was kinda strange, but I like his voice. Lemme know if you need it - I might have it somewhere on my computer. I know the unplugged CD is on my desk here

don't know anything about the album
but the cover is actually nicely designed
i mean as far as artists plastering their
face on covers, this cornell one is about
as good as it gets. simple, neat and feels classic(y).

He is one of those artist that even at his most boring, his voice can make the song worthy. His first solo album was par at best, Audioslave somewhat above par...

But he always made it worth listening to. I've heard his cover of Billie Jean, and that alone makes it worth buying this album...

yeah...it's hard i guess. considering the fact that everyone will compare anything he has done post soundgarden to soundgarden.. because his work in soundgarden was just totally awesome.

that must suck.

This album is terrible. Bad pop songs during the whole album.

His live shows are still great though, some amazing setlists.

Yeah, we need to get this guy a good band & songwriting team. It's such a shame to have such a bad-ass voice and have crap coming out of it.

I swear those bagging on it are the ones who refuse to admit that he's an evolving artist, and must have missed his previous solo effort prior to Audioslave because that was not at all like SG, but a masterpiece, as for this album I haven't heard the whole thing yet as I'd rather get it tuesday than listen to the leak, but "No Such Thing" is pretty catchy but takes so much more life live (saw him on his club tour in April, so amazing, his voice really has hit the range from back in the days of Temple of the Dog and SG) but the tracks "Safe & Sound", "Ghosts" and "Arms Around Your Love" are all great, they just aren't hard rock, so really not made to please those who can only stomach one style of music and forget that Soundgarden ended a decade ago.

I don't know about the rest of it, but You Know My Name from Casino Royale is good!

Yeah! I was really impressed with it when I saw the movie. I'll have to check out his "Billie Jean" cover. If I like it, I'll have to buy the CD. Two good songs usually make it worth it.

And I agree - I love the cover of the CD.

Oh and I don't know what RS' deal is but it's gotten positive reviews elsewhere like from Entertainment Weekly.

I have the acoustic show from 9/9/06 uploaded. It includes Billie Jean amongst other tracks. Let me know if you want the link!

And I did like the Casino Royale song

I hate the new one, I love Euphoria Morning (no, mate, didn't miss it) and if a transition from the awesome alternative rock to bland and unoriginal pop songs is "evolution", then I guess music is doomed.

I'm not saying that Carry On is as great as Euphoria Morning, but crap it is not. What is crap is that Rolling Stone ran what came off as a drunken editorial letter rather than a real review, it doesn't at all critique the album in detail, it's just rambling and ranting for a bygone era.

Here is it entirely: "Welcome back to another episode of the long-running series Chris Cornell: What Happened? Last time, we learned that it took only one Rage Against the Machine reunion gig to turn Audioslave's whole existence into a Van Hagar joke. Now, we tune in to the tasteful pop songs Cornell is singing (and of course songwriting) on Carry On. Shrieking to Kim Thayil's guitar, Cornell was an instrument of awesome. (Listened to Superunknown lately? Even better than you remember. "My Wave," holy crap.) But his talent is for mindless wailing, hitting money notes in the high-grunge style, and he has no knack at all for the subtle sound he's trying now. Groaning "Billie Jean" or ponderous originals like "Scar on the Sky," he's nothing without the dumb grunge overkill he's been trying to put behind him since Soundgarden broke up. Hair? Short. Shirt? On. What happened?"

Last time I checked long before SG was gone, so was Chris Cornell's wild hair.

For a magazine prided as the most famous music magazine, built on taking the popularity of rock music as a serious form, this is the most unprofessional display of "journalism" I've seen in a long time, whether you agree with his opinion or not, leave displays like this for blogs that no one reads, not a "professional" review.

If one were to make a Chris Cornell's Greatest Hits, spanning his entire career & all of his bands, what would it include?

"Black Hole Sun"
"You Know My Name"

What else would you add?

Seasons and Wave Goodbye would probably be the only solo songs worth a greatest hits.

3 or 4 from Audioslave, and the rest would be SG.

I've only listened to the new album twice all the way through, but I haven't heard anything greatest hits worthy off it... except maybe Billie Jean as a hidden track.

Going hits-wise, focusing on singles . . . there are big omissions here . . . and not sure that it would all fit on one disc

Soundgarden:
Rusty Cage
Flower
Jesus Christ Pose
Black Hole Sun
Hands All Over
Spoonman
Pretty Noose

Temple of the Dog:
Say Hello 2 Heaven
Hunger Strike

Audioslave:
Cochise
Like a Stone
I Am the Highway
Be Yourself
Doesn't Remind Me
Original Fire
Revelations

solo:
You Know My Name
No Such Thing
Arms Around Your Love
Change the World
Preaching the End of the World

Soundgarden were a rare band in which every song on their albums were good.

Superunknown alone had 5 singles released:

Spoonman
My Wave
Black Hole Sun
Fell On Black Days
The Day I Tried To Live

Yes, I must have been sleep deprived last night, how could I not include these? I'd even say maybe Wooden Jesus as well.

Ok Carry On as an album is completely uneven yes, but there are good songs to listen to ala carte, whereas Euphoria Morning is a listen all the way through album.

Jesus Christ Pose
Like Suicide
Loud Love
Slaves & Bulldozers
Rusty Cage

AS:
Cochise
Shadow on the Sun
Like a Stone
I am The Highway
Doesn't Remind Me
Be Yourself
Original Fire
Moth
Wide Awake

Solo:
Can't Change Me
Sunshower
