Johannesburg Setlist Party 13-02

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I am happy the boys are on stage again. I am troubled they are playing the same set yet again. What a shame. Hope they mix it up, their catalog is amazing. It doesn't have to be different every night, but jeepers, not the same as the past two years, minus the good songs.

Exactly.

It would be rather silly to expect a major overhaul. After all, this is U2 we are fans of!

Still, they could've easily made some changes. Just like they had Love Rescue Me, Scarlet, All I Want Is You, Desire and One Tree Hill last leg.

And like they had North Star, Glastonbury, Mercy, I Will Follow, Boy Falls, Every Breaking Wave and Stingray for the European leg.

Silver and Gold would've been perfect in place of Scarlet or Miss Sarajevo.

EBTTRT could've been fit in somewhere.

They could've done Please or Gone.

What happened to Kite?

Or No Line On The Horizon?

And where's an older live favorite like 2 Hearts Beat As One?

Simple things, a few slots. General skeleton of the set still the same.

Given what others have pointed out about the rarity of a S Africa visit, I've no problem with BD, IWF, Pride, SBS, WOWY, SHF, MW, COBL, Vertigo, One and Streets, etc in the same set.

My issue is with songs like MS, Scarlet and Walk On overstaying their welcome to the neglect of the back catalog.

I am overall disappointed, but have to say I am ecstatic that they kept I Will Follow!

Dropping that would've added insult to injury for me..........

All this being said, I'd still take the shows they're doing now over the 2 I saw in Boston in 2009.

At least the buzz seems like it's back!

Maybe U2 actually like playing Miss Sarajevo. Bono seems to think it's one of U2's best songs. If you've got no issue with SHF, MW, COBL, etc. all the hits or whatever, I don't get why Walk On can't be lumped in with them.

So you're down to Scarlet, which to me can come and go, I don't care - but to accuse them of neglecting the back catalogue when they're playing Scarlet? What?

For the US Leg, I'd like to see a few of those songs dumped, sure. Especially if there's a new album, but for now? Fine by me. Play them, these people haven't seen U2 since Popmart. Load it up with All that you can't leave behind - also fine by me.

I think U2 really pride themselves in making 'the perfect setlist'. It's not like they're unable to play their back catalogue, or are scared of playing something less well known - just look at HMTMKMKM, Your Blue Room or Scarlet. Their set list looks like it's meticulously designed to get the best crowd reaction, and i think they take more enjoyment in that than in amusing themselves with curveballs.
We might be unimpressed seeing pride or Still haven't found played yet again, when they could play something like gone or mofo, but i'm sure the crowd at the concert is much happier the way it is.
Until north america, i'd expect the set to stay near-identicle, but after that, as it is a 'revisit', surprises are likely - especially if there is a new album. (but even then, the core of the set will probably stay the same - it has all the hits people want to hear, why change it)

Well presumably, they like playing every song in the set list. Songs that they don't like to play, don't feel they have down well, don't think are good enough live, etc they have a long history of dropping. I know Bono loves MS and Larry has called it the only true U2 classic from Passengers.

I like MS a lot. I only dislike a few U2 songs if that, so that's not the discussion here. I just think that after 2 legs of Vertigo and now 2+ legs of 360 as a staple, it's time for something else.

As for Walk On, while it is a recognizable song, it's not on the scale of a Beautiful Day or With or Without You. Not even close.

Scarlet is truly a back catalog deep cut, not disputing that at all. I should have just said "CATALOG" as opposed to "BACK CATALOG." Anyways, I just think they could do something more substantial with this slot than a short instrumental interlude. (Two Hearts Beat As One, Bad, Please........)

This would be a good time to finally ditch the short interlude(MLK, Scarlet) into Walk On given the very positive recent developments in Burma.

All I'm saying is it would be nice to see the same level of rotation as we got in Europe and Australia in 2010.

Hopefully Cape Town they'll make a few changes.

If the band isn't going to change things up, U2.com shouldn't post request articles. It's just frustrating.

Can I just politely ask, don't you get sick of writing the same complaints day after day when you know little is likely to change?

No I don't. I'm not spamming the board so I don't see what the problem is. I'm trying to vent my frustration as I have the right to.

Look, I actually don't think the setlist is that bad actually. Just a few changes would make it incredible.

I've got to hand it to the band for North Star, HMTM, Crazy Tonight, etc. The band sounds great. And I can't wait to see them again in June.

Surprised to see little talk about Hugh Masekela who is a HIGHLY inlfuential figure in world music. Like what Ray Charles is to R&B.

Plus his trumpet playing is one of th every few things that will make this gig unique to u2 tape collectors. Maybe the alternate entrance music will be a curiousity.

When was the last time U2 played South Africa? and here we go again people sitting behind their computer screens complaining

one of the benefits of being far too interested in stadiums :nerd:

the u2.com url for the image leads me to believe they don't know where their own photos from a show are.

Yep, I checked the properties, but they don't even tag them,
how professional :giggle:

I only recognize a handful of stadiums.

Maybe at Cape Town they'll launch right into Boots after coming out to that remix (which is great, IMHO). It could potentially be the best opening sequence this tour, and it's practically staring them in the face. They're so close...!

There was no live feed and I doubt there will be one friday. Apparently the phone reception in South Africa is pretty bad and there's no Mikes number to call in to.

Great entrance boys!!! ...best-so far....KEEP IT!!!

(Note: GOYB Justice Re-mix might also work quite well as the US entry song!!! :hmm:!!!)

Is this the end of Space Oddity as we know it??? ...I/M/H/O...it sucked the air out of the stadium!!! ...So here is to proposing a toast!!!

Thanks for the vid! That's a great entrance

However, I loved Space Oddity playing over the PM before Soon in 2009 and Stingray in 2010, and don't see why it would not work in the future, if they played it just before this Boots remix, a different Boots remix or any other song for that matter.

I have a feeling that the intro used in Johannesburg and possibly Cape Town will remain for these two shows only. It's a great intro, but Space Oddity can flow to it, nothing like hearing Bowie and seeing the smoke fill the stage.
