Having been inspired having just watched WITS vid on U2be (youtube), i was wondering what my fellow u2 peeps feel is u2s best middle eight?

I would offer Whos gonna ride your wild horses (Oh oh, Oh oh the deeper i spin etc) for consideraton
Also Last night on earth (single version) is reet up there for me Ironically, I dont like the WITS effort as it reminds me of Electrical storms too much, which i dont like much either

Wild Horses is fucking awesome , specially live , or if u get an guitar try it on , sounds good as well

But LNOE is another powerful choice , love it live

Walk On is a favorite of mine, the "home section"
Kite "I'm a maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan" is a great one.
First Time "father to son section"

Beautiful Day FTW.

Also:

Mysterious Ways
Acrobat
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

I was always bugged by LNOE's bridge, which they tried to fix with the single version. It irks me how the last chord of the bridge is the same as the verse - it feels awkward to flow from the middle eight into the third verse, like the band is unsure how to pull it off. There's no resolution.

WGRYWH is my least favorite song on AB (I still like it a great deal), but that middle 8 is a highlight of the album.

When I read the thread title, WGRYWH immediately came to mind.

what is a middle eight?

Stay and One come to mind - a bridge perfectly brings the song to its climax.

I think they went for it again with SYCMIOYO, but that payoff always sounded a little forced to me. Like, here's where we can put in the big dramatic U2 moment.

a song is made out of many parts... usual is chorus, verse and a middle eight.... the chorus and verses are obvious to see... let's take WGRYWH as example
You're dangerous 'cos you're honest
You're dangerous 'cos you don't know what you want
Well, you left my heart empty as a vacan lot
For any spirit to haunt
Hey hey, sha la la, hey hey, sha la la

You're an accident waiting to happen
You're a piece of glass left there on the beach
Well you tell me things I know you're not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach
Hey hey, sha la la
Hey hey, sha la la

These lines are the first verse, they're both four lines, and the hey hey sha la la is the same too.... verses usually ahve the same format..

Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee

Chorus

Well you stole it 'cos I needed the cash
And you killed it 'cos I needed revenge
Well you lied to me 'cos I asked you to
Baby, can we still be friends
Hey hey, sha la la
Hey hey, sha la la

Verse again, same format as the ones before

Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee

Chorus

But then: Edge's guitar pattern changes, the drums and bass do too, and you see the format of the lyrics change too.... this part is called the middle eight...

The deeper I spin
The hunter will sin for your ivory skin
Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees, the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heaven's white rose
The doors you open, I just can't close

Don't turn around
Don't turn around
Don't turn around
Your gypsy heart
Don't turn around
Don't turn around again
Don't turn around
And don't look back
Come on now love
Don't you look back

it goes back to the chorus, but it has a few lines changed...

Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna taste your salt water kisses
Wh's gonna take the place of me
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who could tame the heart of thee

hope that's clear for you :)

my fave is this song definately too

Thankyou Galeongirl!
