What are you confused about? The scoring system?

Well, it starts with points, you get 3 for winning, 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss. When teams are tied in points, like Germany and Portugal, the goal difference is what counts. In all the matches, Portugal scored 4 goals (2 vs Ghana and 2 vs USA) and gave away 7(lost 4-0 to germany, 2 from USA and 1 from Ghana). This gives them a goal difference of -3. While the US have scored 4 goals, they only gave away 4. Which makes their goal difference 0. So the USA advance.

If this is tied to, the amounts of goals scored for the team wins, otherwise it's a coin toss.
