U2 & Dublin Developers Settle On New Studio Location

(11/13/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- U2 and developers of Dublin's docklands area--where the band keeps its recording studio--have reached a peace after a bitter court battle earlier this year.

Irish courts ruled in favor of the developers, whose plans for the docklands included demolishing the graffiti-covered building in Hanover Quay where U2 has been making albums since the early '80s. But the two sides announced on Tuesday (November 12) that the studios would get a new home in the top two floors of a high-rise building in the nearby Britain Quay section. U2 will also receive a vote on the committee that's choosing the architectural design for the building.

No financial terms for the deal were announced, but U2 frontman Bono appeared at a press conference to announce that "The new Dublin is something I'm really excited about." Bono did say, however, that the group would have preferred to keep its old studio, "There isn't really a price you can put on it. And whatever the Dublin docklands authority offer us, it's not going to be enough, I can tell you that."

The new building is expected to be finished by 2005.
