Well, Bono did say that this is an album of "letters," with The Showman, for example, being a letter to the fans. Guess this is a letter to all the Freds, Neds, Jacks, and Zacks out there!

Song is good...the drum/guitar breaks are new...need some time with it...not sure if I'm in the Boots thread, but if I was I'm sure I was gushing...

Interesting that we're getting two new songs a week apart, and maybe 3 months before the album release...:hmm:

After about 10 more listens, getting a Muse/White Stripes vibe which is cool and this song screams confidence and swagger from the boys, about time for some more rock n roll. This should kill live as the next tour opener, would be good to close out TJT as well, we will see. Guessing YTBTAM will get some love next month and Oct being the first single though on the rest of TJT. Do you guys realize how golden of an age this is? Album 2014, Tour 2015, Tour 2017, Album 2017, haven't seen this much action since AB/Zooropa era I believe.

Someone pointed out these are all names from characters in School of Rock movie (althou i dont believe there is a Jack character.... only Jack Black actor), and Larry did say back in a 2014 interview that this was his households fav movie. Strange connection. Meaning...?

Just got home from a long day and I'm sure this has been said by others...

But who thinks that U2 takes the stage with this song on the E&I tour with the house lights up (a la Elevation tour) and the house lights go out and the stage lights shoot on when the first chorus hits: "When the lights go out!!"

I don't have a huge opinion. It seems fun. And bouncy. And there are elements that are really good. I prefer "The Little Things..." as heard on Kimmel. That is a song I am really looking forward to hearing/hoping they didn't alter.

Vertigo, the comparison many are making, sold me with the lines from "They know that they can't dance, at least they know..." to the chorus. Something about that run of lyric got me, made me overlook any old man "bah" I had about the hugeness of the track.

This has potential to grab me in some way. I am thrilled to have it. But I am still looking forward to "The Little Things" most..

I agree. This song is ok, but I didn't have a huge reaction (and I was hoping to). Maybe it would be different if I heard it without being distracted by the video, which I also thought was just ok...but probably not. Like you, I'm also really looking forward to The Little Things. I got so hear it live in Foxboro and I really love that song, lyrics, emotion, music, all.

Who is Neil Finn? Guess he accomplished not being relevant with me!!

Only the most famous and accomplished musician to ever come from New Zealand, with global hits under his own name and in Crowded House and Split Enz.

But hey, stay ignorant of great music if that's what floats your boat.

It's been pretty cool this last month being a fan of the Finns, with Neil recording his album live on the Internet and getting Tim and Liam and so many others along for the sessions. But it's not comparable because U2 would never be relaxed or comfortable enough in their own skins to do it, they seem to need the discomfort. And of course U2 have been desperate for global chart success. Neil, after being considered daggy in the late nineties, has just done his own thing - and, hilariously, achieved so much more cred than U2. He's now the "cool dad" of the Aussie and Kiwi music scenes and has never been more respected. Without trying, he's become, at least in this part of the world, what U2 want to be.

Yeah, maybe. I wouldn't be surprised if they close out the encore with the 3 songs off SOE, Blackout, The Best Thing, and Little Things.

I think folks need to remember this video was meant as an album teaser to get people amped up. They likely included the crowd noise to prevent it from being misinterpreted as the first radio single. When it's later released as a single, which I think is likely, we might even get another more proper video.

I'm also encouraged that we haven't heard any reports of fans being called in for a Best Thing video shoot. That probably means that songs video will not be a performance vid.

I've done A LOT of looking on Twitter today. Have not seen a single negative comment about The Blackout. That's pretty remarkable.

We got a few at U2gigs, but you're right, the positive reactions have been plentiful.

And although I'd prefer there not to be crowd noise, some people in this thread are really exaggerating how distracting it is.

I get more of a comfortable imagine dragons / Kings of Leon (Because of the times onwards) kind of vibe listening to this

Comfortable

Song for someone, "and there is a light, don't let it go out". Songs of experience is what happens when you realize the lights do go out and the aftermath.

The Blackout owns Volcano. Can't say yet how it compares to Vertigo.

Other than that, I do miss the sonic magic of the 80s and 90s, but 21st century U2 has its pleasures, and they do rock as hard as anyone. It is, indeed, very masculine. Just throbbing with peen.

Agreed. Just found this partial review on Stereogum. Sounds like they're pleasantly surprised.

"Upon hearing the full song, the verses contain flickers of their early post-punk sound and even some traces of Achtung Baby, but the chorus is definitely in that post-“Vertigo” mold."

Well, I think TBT video will be a live performance type video. They shot live footage stuff during TJT tour. Who knows.

Although, Ax - like U2, NF has a significant contingent of fans desperately waiting for him to make the album they want him to make, which he probably won't do. The difference, I think, is that what he ends up making instead is still extraordinary.

I'm definitely in the younger demographic of U2 fans and I like this a lot. If this was released by a younger band I think it'd definitely make some inroads with younger people, alas, it's U2 so it'll probably go nowhere.

Yeah, I remember the stuff with the girl and the jacket. But since they weren't singing the song, I would guess those clips would be interspersed with something else. But like you said, who knows.

I like it.
The beginning reminds me of Zoo Station.
Look forward to crowdless version.
I did not like The Miracle or Boots and Vertigo was not my favorite from HTDAAB.
That being said, this is a good sign for my enjoyment as I like this better than those 3 songs (yes even the blessed vertigo).
I don't care about commercial viability.
I am looking forward to The Best Thing which I do like better than this song based on the Kygo remix but I still really like this song....

Fan since 1983, not a big Interference poster anymore (that was the 00s as U2LA).

Any day there is new U2 music is a good day.

Have they really been lacking this sound lately, though? The Miracle, Volcano, Cedarwood, NLOTH, Boots, SUC, Breathe, Vertigo, ABOY... If anything, they've leaned on a rock and roll sound more in their late career than ever before. Personally, I prefer more atmospheric/introspective stuff (like Ground Beneath Her Feet, Stateless, Moment of Surrender, Being Born, Iris, Troubles, etc) and find that sound far more appropriate for the band's age.

I don't think they are ever going to top Vertigo for a pure rock and roll hit - I wish they'd stop trying and find something new.
