Bernie did win the rural WI and MI rural white vote over Hillary though, in the primary.

But those were Democratic voters.

Bernie was treated with kid gloves during the primary. He would have wilted the second he got the nomination and Trump's people started reminding everyone 24/7 that he's a Socialist. Also, who knows that Bernie has in his past that hasn't come to light? Why didn't he release his tax returns? It pisses me off that he got a total pass on that but Clinton's every word, facial expression and cough was scrutinized.

The only positive outcome for my state of Iowa last night was that three state judges who supported the 2009 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage here were retained.

Otherwise, my state's still got Steve King, Chuck Grassley, David Young, and Terry Branstad in power, and the state overwhelmingly went for Trump. Faaaaaaaaaaaantastic :|.

Minnesota went blue this election. Maybe I can move up there.

Yeah, I say that Joe Biden would have won because he probably could have appealed to rust belt voters who apparently aren't ready for a female president.

On the bright side, I can now legally be stoned for the next 1-4 years depending on when Trump brings on armageddon.

 from another Iowan. I love my state but it is hard sometimes. Steve King represents my district. It is mortifying.

Minnesota is also that much closer to Canada if worst comes to worst. I think my passport has either expired or is about to expire. Maybe I should get it renewed just in case. I really do think it is important to stay and try to do what I can to help my country somehow, but I feel so hopeless and helpless right now and I want a contingency plan.

the exit polls I saw had Hillary getting about as many GOP votes and Trump got Dems in many states,
is that what people are seeing?? also, Hillary lost her own demographic, white women voted for Trump over her

This election will be rehashed a hundred times and as many books will be written and still who knows if we will ever understand it.

For the Republicans, I am guessing they all need to step in line behind Trump because they see what turnout he can bring and are already looking ahead to saving their own asses in 2018/2020. I don't expect he'll have any opposition and the "moderate"/corporatist Republicans are going to get marginalized and eaten alive within that party now. It will be an interesting dynamic.

For the Democrats, now is obviously the time to move on. Purge the DNC and step away from the 20+years of Clintons and their influence. This is probably naturally happening already. I think the Dems need to move away from thinking they can win the centre. That is what we all heard over and over again, that she is going to pull in the moderates. In the words of Trump, wrong! John McCain may have lost the election partly when he stood in Michigan and said their jobs aren't coming back - spoke the truth, but it hurt. THIS MYTHICAL MODERATE MIDDLE white America is not coming back. Time to move on. They should regroup and rebuild around a very simple truth, that demographics is destiny. The bell tolls for the Republicans, maybe not today but they cannot go full blown Trump/racists for the next 4, 8, 12 years and not suffer the consequences. Go for the women, the minority vote and the few white men who are not disgruntled. Plenty enough to win there with intelligent policies. In case you are confused and need an example of the type of Democrat that ISN'T the future, please see Kaine, Tim.

Yeah for those all over Facebook saying that Bernie would have won, that's like saying your football team would have won if they had opted to kick a field goal instead of going for it in the 1st quarter.

I had to make the hardest choice of my life today. It's laundry day and the only nice-ish option I had to wear to work was my Packers jersey. I *almost* didn't wear it. Fuck off Wisconsin :(. But please leave behind the Packers and all the cheese we can eat.

I live right outside Wilkes-Barre PA. The county was +5 Obama in 2012 and went +20 Trump last night. The biggest flip in a populated county.

I've written multiple times in the forum about the blue collar democrat rejecting the current party trajectory. I was not surprised by the rust belt results.

Obama just gave a very good speech I hope most of you had a chance to watch it
also I hope you have a chance to watch Trump speech from last night as Obama said it was a very good speech

There are so many bigots in Wisconsin. I've always been surprised that it's been a blue state for so long.

Trump sounded sedated and almost normal.

The rumor among high end financial circles is that there was some intervention in order to ensure his speech is what it was to preserve the markets. Inclined to believe it.

I just caught the last part of Obama's speech. He is a class act, and I'm going to miss him even more now when he leaves office come January.

 He represents my area, too. I just do not understand.

Precisely. It's not THAT far a trip up north, which is good to know.

I echo your sentiments on everything else, too. I don't have a passport at all right now, but it might not hurt to look into getting one. I don't want to abandon my country, but last night was one hell of a nasty punch to my gut and I feel like I really don't recognize this place right now.

The DNC reminds me all too much of the Democratic Party of Florida. They try to center themselves to focus on obtaining republican votes but entirely miss the fact that independent doesn't mean center.

It's sort of why Marco Rubio so easily disposed of his opponent. It's why Rick Scott is governor. It's why Charlie Christ was governor.

Corrections Corporation of America has seen its stock price increase by 47% today. AG Rudy Giuliani, ladies and gentlemen.

I 100% agree with president Obama in saying that we should be rooting for Trump's success, as disgusting as that sounds.

Just hopefully economic and foreign policy success, not success of his campaigned social policy.

I don't want *him* to succeed at all. I want congress / Washington to keep working, but for him to succeed means another 4 years of his presidency and then who knows what after him.

while we disagree, you are not a troll (like another who comes to mind).

you have to be given credit: you were basically right.

What are those? Tearing up NAFTA? Imposing 30-40% tariffs on American products made abroad? Holding up NATO allies for cash? Killing families of terrorists? Using nukes?

I mean all of those = global instability in some way.

I want his presidency to succeed at anything good it can.

I would LOVE nothing more than in four years to have to swallow my pride and admit I was wrong about x y and z.

He can't shake the title of xenophobia/sexism/etc. and I'm in no way saying I support him or his behavior. I think he's a vile human being. The only thing I'm saying is I'm hoping for the best. He's president for four years, and potentially 8 just as a basic measure of recent US political history.

I guess what I'm saying is, I never want to be BMP crossing my arms and hoping for the world to burn so I can push my agenda or say "I told you so."

After last night, and sleeping (though it was tough to fall asleep) my nerves have calmed down a bit.

At this point, anything we think Trump will do is just that, a thought. He could be the worst president in the history of the country, or he could be the best.

I'm definitely concerned because of all the shit that he's said in the campaign. Also having the GOP control all branches of government is never a good thing (ditto if Dems control everything). We have a system of checks and balances for a reason. My fear lies with this.

That being said, I will judge Trump on what he does in office. I did my part already, I voted and I didn't get the candidate I wanted.

If Trump is a success for all of America, that's a good thing. If it's the opposite, then we as a society have to figure out what's next.

The Democratic Party also needs to really figure shit out. I honestly don't believe anyone besides a 2008 Obama type candidate beats The Donald. While Bernie basically ran the Trump campaign minus all the racist/nationalist undertones, I don't think he converts the surge of rural GOP/Independents that Trump took home in the battleground states.

All we can do is judge him on what he does starting in January. Until then, it does us no good to worry about what could happen.

Jesus. I get it, you're mad. I'm mad, too. But you do realize what you're doing here, right? I'm talking about making the most of the shit sandwich we were served. You're immediately disqualifying my statement, that's not conducive for success.

To answer your question, it's being hopeful and saying "well shit if you're really going to engage Russia like that, I hope it works." Or, "if tearing up NAFTA is out of our control, I sure fucking hope it works."

I'm not endorsing the idea of doing these things. I'm acknowledging that they're highly likely, given the fact that the Republicans control the entire government now.

yes to this.
