Thoughts after watching opening night?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

I've only seen a little but I'll take the word of the people who were there!

Sounds like it was great! I heard the Real Thing-Mysterious-Desire trio. I was excited for that but at least from a low quality audio recording, was a bit underwhelming. Desire was a vast improvement over the acoustic versions but a far cry from Lovetown.

On the plus side, The Miracle worked great, I thought and the non stop, instantaneous transition to Out Of Control kicked major ass!!!! Now if they could only swap the order of those two! I haven't listened to anything else yet, but I can easily see myself agreeing with those who said the first 4 songs were a big highlight.

Bono did say the first thing he's ever said that disappointed me with the "don't shoot" bullshit. U2 has always enjoyed a great relationship with the law enforcement community and they are a presence at all shows. And a big logistical part of every tour since at least TJT.

I implore you, Bono, knock this off!!! Last thing they need is this getting out and pissing off the police. They'll protest shows and some of the more strident unions will slow down or stop escorts, mark my words. They'll get it out there in the public.

I have said before and I'll say again, police misconduct is an issue and needs to be held to account, but not a shred of fact that's come out anywhere has suggested Ferguson was anything but a justified shooting by an officer whose life was in immediate danger. Black, White, Hispanic, anything, you're getting shot if you do what Michael Brown did in Ferguson.

It's still a human tragedy, the last one who wanted Brown or anyone dead was the officer.

I am liberal, even by Boston area standards, and I greatly admire all of Bono's activism and think it has actually helped. I am also the staunchest defender here of the tax move. And I've pointed out many times how Bono is actually well informed on those subjects he works on.

However, he's wrong here and I'm disappointed. I still love the man and what he does and stands for, but he is so much better than that criminal Al Sharpton.

Again, if anyone from the band or their management sees this, please, please, PLEASE consider suggesting that Bono drop this and fast!

It just seems like the "cool" thing to do now to bash the police and U2 has never been about following the cheap "limousine liberal/entitled white people" trend.

Sweetest Thing and Iris went over like a lead balloon in my opinion. Bullet kicked ass.

Edge falling off the stage wasn't so hot.

New tour is like new clothes. It is gonna take a few runs until they are fully comfortable.

I'm just happy there were no songs from NLOTH. Praise da Lord.

Thought iris sounded excellent ? specially with the little snippet of mofo

Gotta say that is the most boring setlist I've ever seen I think. Was expecting something more than only the 'normal' songs + SoI.

Exactly my thoughts. The show in person sure must be amazing, can't wait for my gig in September, and I'm happy they play SOI songs like Cedarwood and The troubles (and from the video clips they sound very good), but the thing is this tour so far (yeah I know it's only 1 show so far lol) doesn't have the "surprise" obscurity songs. Vertigo from the beginning had songs like An Cat Dubh and Zoo Station, 360 had Ultraviolet and totally unexpected remix of Crazy Tonight, what this tour has? Encore starting with COBL? The sweetest thing? Hope this factor will change though.

I still find the sweetest thing just as surprising as anything considering there has been no signs over the previous 2 tours of it being played, just because it may not be a song that you don't like doesn't mean it's not a rare live played song

Whoa, one song. A single, no less. Don't push your luck, U2, the casuals might walk out en masse.

Holy crap.

You honestly think "rich folk" who don't give a shit about U2 just show up to the shows just for shits and giggles?

Here's a thought... there's less jumping around in the audience because U2's audience, much like U2, is older.

Could be the case there. Besides... weren't the rich folk only in the red zone sections anyway?

Terrible audience, indeed.

so dull...hate being surrounded by people like that when I am at a concert.
Reminds me of Vertigo show in Toronto when a guy sitting next to my friend and I complained when we started dancing around and singing.

Or Desire full band, for that matter. Or that Elevation and One were dropped for this one.

This video proves my point.

If you're on the floor, you are forced to choose between looking at the band on the stage or turning your head & body 90 - 120 degrees away from the band to look at the video presentation.

Just because the technology exists to replicate AT&T Stadium's center-hung screens at every arena doesn't mean it was a good idea.

There's always a tradeoff for being up close. If you want a bird's eye view of the production, get an upper seat. The screen follows the stage design and allows for selling seats everywhere. They've already done the light curtain thing.

I don't know if I would count the sweetest thing as a obscurity song really. Sure it missed two tours and wasn't a staple even on Elevation, but remember it's still one of their biggest hits: it was on two greatest hits compilations, including U218, and even today you can hear it on some radio stations. But even if you count it as a rarity you must admit it doesn't have the same WTF OMG factor as zoo station or ultraviolet don't you?

I always found zoo station a little flat during vertigo to be honest

Yeah i agree, u2 shows have always been out looking all around the arena. Ever since zoo tv anyway

They would work perfectly fine in Toronto and Montreal, too...cities with plenty of Euro musical sensibilities, if that's the point your making..just sayin'

Yeap, it is. Reach, Troubles and Crystal are everything I want to hear live. Even more than Acrobat, to be honest.

I'm really sad they're ignoring NLOTH. Hope they reconsider and take at least Magnificent and NLOTH from the rehearsals into that set.

And people really need to put down their fu***ing phones, seriously. It's something we have to deal with these days when going to a concert. It's better in Europe, though, I experienced a lot of great crowds at U2 shows. And no, age is not a factor, unless you're physically unable to move or jump.

For god's sake, it's a U2 gig not your kid's Christmas Play https://youtu.be/9CH7fOKeRPE?t=4m46s

I can't wait for I+E to get its very own cell phone rant.

PUT DOWN YOUR FUCKING CELL PHONE YOU'RE AT A ROCK N ROLL SHOW HAVE SOME RESPECT

USE IT LATER TO LISTEN TO OUR NEW ALBUM JUST NOT RIGHT THIS SECOND

...NOW GET OUT YOUR CELL PHONES WE HAVE A CHARITY TYPE THING WE NEED YOU TO DO

:D

I expect it won't bother me quite so much when I'm flailing about like a mad bugger in GA; like the last gig I went to I'll no doubt end up with a nice amount of space round me to dance in.

But jeez, I mean I'm going to dance the whole gig in the cheap seats, let alone the next night in GA. I might take some photos on night one and POSSIBLY one or two during a slow song from the floor depending on where I am, but NEVER during something you could conceivably cut a rug during
