Releasing it as a conventional album single would attach more weight and demand to it, thus potentially more downloads/donations/awareness. Proceeds are still going to charity no matter if it's attached to an album still several months away. I don't see the problem.

What's the difference? It's being released as a single, and they're saying it's from the album. If they're going with a slightly different release strategy this time - that's great. Pages and pages of posts over the years have been saying they should do exactly that. They're being quite specific with their wording ("sneak peak") for a reason, whatever that is.

I can only think it's to do with...

(a) Their judgement over whether or not they should overtly be promoting a single/album for what is meant to be a charity thing. Especially for Bono to not be seen to be 'using' his own charity to push his bands new product.

(b) For some reason it doesn't work with a larger album release plan.

(c) It's about the specific songs. There's Invisible, and then there's Song X, and Invisible is not really a 'single' song, but might well be the best one on the album, while Song X is the long tagged 'Lead Single' but maybe didn't suit the HIV/AIDS charity ad, maybe it's a new direction and a bit of a risk (!!!), or maybe they're just a bit gun-shy about their own judgement after Boots. The band would like Invisible to be the first thing heard, the first thing to receive critical judgement, and the thing to lead buzz. But they don't want it tagged with 'Lead Single' and with it's performance judged as such. Some time in the near future, Song X is released with all the Lead Single hype alongside New Album hype with a more traditional promo push. It's been said in here a lot - think about how differently No Line would have been received if Moment of Surrender had somehow been the first song heard. It would not have done well as a single, but if they had it out there somehow ahead of Boots... different trajectory.

So, we are eight days, five hours, and forty-five minutes away from a new U2 song. Neat, huh?

I'm just going to post here so that certain people are aware that mods are watching. Thinly veiled critiques of people you've been suspended for arguing with before won't fly. Responding to thinly veiled critiques with a public call out just itching to start another argument won't fly either.

A helpful link for certain people:

The difference is that "charity single" and "lead single for U2's forthcoming album with proceeds to charity" have completely distinct connotations as far as public demand. The fact that this song is on the album is not being publicized outside of that obscure interview. The press releases are vague on the topic.

No matter. This is all most likely a carefully orchestrated lead-in to the new album. A deliberate progression back into the public consciousness.

November - Ordinary Love is released (a made-for-awards effort)
January - Golden Globes appearance
February - Super Bowl ad/Invisible download
February - Jimmy Fallon appearance
March - Academy Awards appearance?
April - second single/conventional lead single?
June - album release?

Ah. That rings a bell. I've probably heard that once, and I've heard Jimmy James ~1000 times. Still, that person should listen to Check Your Head. They can play "Name that Sample".

Are you still referring to me?? I didn't recognize the sample right away. But I do own every Beasties album and quite enjoy them. :)

there is a wasp flying outside of my office window. I know this has nothing to do with this thread, I just found it odd that in January, before the Superb Owl, we have wasps flying around outside.

Could this be the end of the world coming, instead of the end of AIDS and invisible penises?

Wars and rumors of wars, strange weather, pestilence, plagues, Justing Bieber gets arrested, etc...

Ive never seen a wasp penis but im pretty sure its invisible to the naked eye. Speaking of naked, I went to a strip bar last night and blew a ton of money on lap dances and booze. Not sure how I made it home and im still bleeding on the inside. Luckily.

It's U2's fault and Bono's in particular. The wasp problem is a symptom of the inevitable climate collapse that will eventually lead to mankind being extinct soon. Now we all know Bono loves his jet set life style, so he's trying to cover up with all the Africa and AIDS charity work. In fact, the end is near and Bono's contribution to that is a substantial one.

Could this U2 song "Invisible" actually be about wasp penises :hmm:?
