So now for some thoughts on the actual show, haha!
We were right of stage, two rows from the front in the seats (Everett gave us little looks throughout the show). Pretty damn great spot and it was good to be able to see a bit more). Aside from the tracks that they played again from Sunday (Wrecking Ball, Out in the Street, Pay Me My Money Down, etc) I actually didn't recognise a single track until I'm Goin' Down (which was great - dedicated to two girls in the crowd who have gone to heaps of shows - had an awesome horn section). I may have to get Wrecking Ball, because fuck me, the title track, Death to My Hometown and Shackled and Drawn are just so fucking good. Both nights they were absolute highlights among the older tracks in the set. Just brilliant.
I don't remember much about any of the songs that preceded the end of the main set, save for they were all good, but the pace was a little slower than Sunday night, so overall (ignoring Jungleland I'd say Sunday's show was better). Candy's Room was chosen in a sign battle with Incident on 57th Street, and it was fucking great. Ghost of Tom Joad was again scintillating. My god does Morello kill on that, and it's really cool watching Bruce react - he's obviously hugely fond of the dude and they were drinking and talking together at the hotel bar for a good half hour after the show.
There was not even an encore break tonight. The lights went down after Badlands and Bruce simply made his way to the crowd to grab a sign. I knew this was the make-or-break moment, because I'd been studying the Aussie sets - if they didn't do it here, they weren't going to do it. The sign was a bit ripped, but I caught a glimpse of it, and saw the word "LAND" as well as "Jake" and a sax and I fucking flipped my shit. I was like a little schoolgirl seeing One Direction. It is just unbelievable to hear one of your favourite ever songs live, when you thought maybe you never would. The piano's gorgeous, the lyrics evocative, the guitar break after the second Jungleland just hugely exciting, Bruce is belting out some of those lyrics, "WE'LL MEET 'NEATH THAT GIANT EXXON SIGN", "CHERRY TOP", "DOWN IN JUNGLELAND", and then Jake comes in, and oh man. So fucking powerful. So fucking powerful. I was just blown away. Then Bruce comes back in, and I never fail to get a bit teary-eyed during the "tonight....in....jun....gle...laaaaaaaannd", which was even better live and then the final part and just oh my god. Maybe you guys think I'm silly for falling head over heels in love with just one Bruce song as opposed to ton of good albums I've not even heard, but shit, it's just such an amazing tune.
Then the lights came up and Born to Run, Dancing in the Dark, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and American Land were all just amazing, it was like getting a compliment from your best mate after you've just had sex or something. A real victory lap. My colleague Stephen, who is about 33 I think, called it "best show ever" six songs in and reaffirmed that later on. He had a great time so I was stoked for him.
Then we walked back to my car and Stephen texted Everett, who told us to come to the Park Hyatt Hotel, a real prestigious joint behind Parliament House, I've never seen anything so lavish in my entire life. We get into the lobby, pretty wet from the walk in the rain, and Everett comes to meet us. They get back to the hotel like immediately after the show, they bus them right back. Then Everett took us down to the bar, and bought us beers and tequila shots. I fucking hate tequila, cos I had a bad night on it when I was about 17-18, but when a member of the E Street band buys you a shot you don't refuse it, y'know? So I downed it and pretended it went down smooth, cos by that stage Cindy, one of the backup singers had joined us, and she was really beautiful.
Me and Everett and Stephen stayed in the one spot just chatting for a good hour about the show, Melbourne, his other work (he was playing with Hall and Oates and left that band to join the E Street band, apparently Oates was fine with it but Hall didn't speak to him for two months. Then more of the band filtered downstairs. Met one of the road crew, it was his 50th, he showed us a pic of his kid. Jake Clemons came down, awesome dude, I told him how fucking good he was on Jungleland and he was very sincere in thanking me. I didn't elongate any convos cos I didn't want to bother any of them y'know, they get fans coming up to them constantly.
Then we chatted with Bruce's manager for a while and had a few laughs. She manages another band I've forgotten the name of. Then we met Roy, who was really great, I told him again Jungleland was awesome and he said "Jungleland was really really good tonight" and spoke about how the best versions are when he and Bruce get in sync, and tonight he felt they were. Then I met the journo, then Tom Morello briefly, I said I didn't expect to ever see a member from Rage in the E Street band, to which he replied me neither, then he said "I'm not just a casual fan, I'm a fucking huge fan". Then Everett and Stephen went out to a gay bar (not sure if anything happened between them, don't think so though) and I went home. I think they're going out again tomorrow, Stephen invited him to a "big gay dance party" during the day and Everett was all excited. He was a fucking awesome dude, was really nice to me even though he'd just met me, chatted with me, laughed at some of my jokes and stories (like how Cherry Bar, the bar Stephen took him too, refused Lady Gaga an aftershow when she was touring here because he'd already booked a no-name local band, he loved that story).
Anyway this was only meant to be a paragraph or two but I've gone and done it again. Ah well! Thanks to you guys for reply to my posts too, you did play a bit of a role in me deciding to go to the concert and I'm so fucking glad I did. $200 but the story is goddamn priceless, even if I didn't get to meet Bruce.
