He actually did it before then, it turns out: he did it on both the PopMart Mexico and Slane DVDs. I am on the record as down on Bono's Elevation performances of almost everything, but he killed that verse on New Year's Day at Slane.

That version of The Fly from Elevation Boston is my favourite version of that song.

Ah, cool.....PopMart Mexico versions of the song make me happy because the song takes center stage, not the video board or lights, etc...they just crush the song and don't need any bells or whistles. Song's fucking epic and absolutely perfect for a stadium setting.

I have said before that I think there are four songs U2 needs to play at every show: New Year's Day, Bad, Where the Streets Have No Name and Until the End of the World.

iYup, do you listen to the radio/have you been following the i101 debacle? Cause it's fucking cracking me up.

I've seen the band thrice, and they didn't play NYD at any of those shows. A bit of a bummer. Oh, well. I did get to see them play a totally spontaneous version of One Tree Hill as well as the LIVE debut of Your Blue Room. HaHA! College basketball!

I'm watching us beat the Blue Jays and listening to some old Dinosaur Jr. tracks. "Start Choppin" is an awesome song, my friends.

That whole DinoJr album is awesome. Out There, What Else Is New?, Get Me... So many great tracks. Love that guy's solos

Green Mind is another great LP, and Without A Sound is pretty underrated. Not a huge fan of the old Lou Barlow days, but that second reunion album was very impressive.

Seeing OTH live was one of the greatest moments I've ever had at a concert.

That said, they need to play NYD the next time I see them, or you guys are going to hear about it.

You're Living All Over Me all the way.

Or, alternatively, listen to Freak Beat on a constant loop for 45 minutes.

That Pitchfork top album list inspired me to go back and listen to Franz Ferdinand's debut album. I still love that thing. A ton of fun.

Wow. A fan along the third base line at the White Sox/Blue Jays just had what they're thinking is a heart attack and they brought the medics out and are trying to resuscitate him. Doesn't look good. Fuck.

I hardly ever listen to the radio, but I did read about their format change. Have they done something else now?

Well, as you may know, last year Q101 went off the air in favor of an all-news format.

That station bombed like you wouldn't believe, so about 3 weeks ago they changed the format to what was being referred to as an "Adult Hits" station, but what it really was was one of the most cracked out radio experiences I have ever had. It was pretty much all 90s music, and by ALL 90s, I mean Hip Hop/Rap, Pop, Grunge, Rock, R&B, Dance...it was crazy. It was the most bipolar radio station ever and hilariously fun to listen to.

...until today.

When they "expanded their playlist" to include top 40 garbage, which is now pretty much all they're playing.

Following the backlash has been entertaining evening fare. 512 posts on Facebook so far, nearly all of them, but one (that I've seen) negative.

My favorite moment of the backlash?

The only somewhat positive comment:
Hey, Laura, guess who the top four most listened to stations in Chicago are, according (by overall number of listeners) to the latest Arbitron ratings? ANSWER - 103.5 KISSFM, B96, 101.9 The Mix, and 93.9 Lite FM. Simple business tells us that those who make the decisions at i101 would not be doing the best for their company if they didn't see those statistics and say, "Hey, there's a huge audience out there that wants this music, let's go get our own piece of the pie."

And the response (This is my favorite part):
It's pretty embarrassing when you recommend a radio station to a bunch of your friends and go out of your way to give the station feedback, only for it to flip to the same sort of automated, short-rotation top 40 that's already being done across the dial, across the country. I should like to think the #3 market deserves niche formats. This doesn't look like Jefferson City to me, but this was a small-time move.

As for our resident Radio Pro defending Merlin's decision to clutter the market with more safe-as-milk adult contemporary, I would submit that "trying to get a slice of the pie" does you no good when everyone else has already eaten the pie. B96 and the Mix are practically heritage stations as far as the FM band goes, and Kiss FM has come to command a strong market share as well. How do you distinguish yourself to prospective advertisers who have already committed to the big guys at CBS and Clear Channel? "We're like them, but we're not them"? At least a station like WXLC can say that they superserve the Lake County subregion in ways the downtown stations don't. This is just a late arrival to a crowded party.

Good to see that no matter what changes in the radio business, it will never lose its ability to disappoint people.

You haven't lived until you hear the transition between "U Oughtta Know" and "Everybody Dance Now"
