Sex Church sounds like a snottier Jesus And Mary Chain, or possibly Pains of Being Pure At Heart with balls. Haven't decided yet. I dig their sound though.

I thought they sounded like crappy A Place To Bury Strangers demos.

Well, my comment was relative. Pains is pretty much Belle And Sebastian with the acoustic guitars replaced by electrics. Equally twee, just louder.

Well, I was wrong about everything, apparently. Say it Ain't So, Smells Like Teen Spirit, etc.

Sure it's cool to see Pavement at #1, but this Shuttlecock snub has convinced me to boycott their lists from now on. I'll read new music reviews, but I don't give a shit anymore about their take on the past. Fuck these assholes.

I've never been a big fan of their lists period, but their music videos of the '90s list is just horrendous.

The U2 snub, fuck 'em.

  • I guessed 4 of the top 10. Not too shabby, considering.
  • Hyperballad over All Is Full of Love makes me very, very happy. Common People at #2 for the decade equally so.
  • The lack of Stay is disappointing, the lack of One simply baffling.
  • Smells Like Teen FAIL.

Also, LOL at Loser being better than Where It's At, Devil's Haircut, The New Pollution, etc.

Yeah, thank you. Personally, I would have liked to see Cold Brains there, or any Mutations love, but I think that's when they started to get bored with him.

If we're talking one song per artist, I can't think of anything more fresh and era-defining than Where It's At. It's when people finally realized that Beck was a major talent. I remember trying to convince my friends that Odelay was a masterpiece right after it came out and they wouldn't believe me because of Mellow Gold.

Eventually, I was proven correct.

Odelay is an amazing listening experience, but I'll confess to very rarely ever listening to the tracks out of context. For that reason, I rank it somewhere in the middle of a great discography. For example, Where It's At is a brilliant piece of work, but I rarely ever listen to it. I just can't find a hook anywhere in there. I guess you could say I respect Odelay but have never truly fallen in love with it the way I have Sea Change, Midnite Vultures or Mellow Gold.

Some predictions for the P4K Top 20 90's songs thing, no order:

Dr. Dre - Nuthin But A G Thang
Weezer - Say It Ain't So
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Pavement - Gold Soundz
U2 - One
Biggie Smalls - Juicy
Outkast - Player's Ball? I don't know.
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow

Damn. Not that it was incredibly difficult, but I'm a bit proud of myself. Got 7 of the 9 that I guessed. And what's funny, one of the songs I forgot to type but was totally thinking - Protect Ya Neck - is my favorite hip hop song of all time (OF ALL TIME). So happy to see that up there. As I'm sure I've said before, Inspectah Deck's opening verse on that song is one of my favorite things in the entire world.

I'm pleased that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was not number one, and also that Depeche Mode got some recognition. The list in general, however, really irritated me, as Pitchfork always does. It's not even about the choices, rather just the insufferable air of pomposity in the writing.

And when I eventually get around to listening to Pavement, I'll be quite angry with Pitchfork if the band is anything short of brilliant.

Hedge just suggested a big treat for NZ fans:

He said they will likely be playing One Cock Hill during those shows.

That's awesome news.

It is, although honestly I think it's expected that they play it when they go there now. It would surprise me more if they didn't play it.

Well, considering you said NZ right out there in the open, any self-respecting U2 fan with half a brain could have figured it out.

;)
