Could Winter and Mercy fit on the same album? Or are they too similar to one another?

Maybe a reworked Mercy and a reworked Winter would fit on the next album. Every Breaking Wave, Winter, Mercy... 3 good songs to look forward to.

Winter doesn't do much for me either
but that comparison doesn't make Mercy any better all of a sudden

At first glance, I would never say that SUC or Boots could be on the same album as WAS or MOS. Then I heard said album, and, obviously, changed my opinion... NLOTH flows amazingly well. It all depends on how it's done.

Winter can stay where it is. Mercy I wouldn't mind hearing on a U2 album someday.

Winter isn't that good a song. It's OK, but overlong, and it's omission from the album was probably a good thing.

Mercy I think has been discussed to death, although I personally think it's fabulous. As many people hate it as love it. But I think it's like U2's equivalent of Bob Dylan's 'Blind Willie McTell' (although Dylan at least did play his song live and sanction an official release eventually). I'd be surprised if it ever sees the light of day on an official release though, unless as part of some sort of career-ending retrospective / clearout of the vaults at some point in the future. I think that's the only place where Mercy and Winter are likely to coexist.

I don't hate Mercy
it just seems that there's a good reason why it wasn't on any album yet

A finished Mercy would be a great song. As it is, it's a very good song.

Winter is too Coldplay-ish. And, no, I am not trying to invite the really stupid CP-U2 argument that goes on here way too much. Yes, we'll never know who recorded what when ... but CP released their album first. And I like CP. So, I don't hate Winter because it sounds like CP. That said, there's a lot of cool moments on Winter. Take out the CP element ... and maybe we can talk about putting it on an album.

Many on here have raised the very valid point that Mercy has been passed around amongst U2 fans that it probably will never be on a album. That's a shame for many Mercy fans because we have been waiting a finished version of that song for awhile.

A friend of mine suggested to me years ago that he wanted to hear an album version of Lady With The Spinning Head. I LOVE that song, and it was certainly good enough to be on an album, but I told him that I already had that song, and I'd rather have new ones....

That's how I feel about Mercy on an album. I feel Winter is a lot more flawed and could use another vocal take, but its out there already.... why trade the future away for what we've already got?

If Mercy shows up on a tracklist for a forthcoming album I’d be pretty worried about the album and would be praying that it’s had a complete overhaul.
It might be overblown, over bombastic, formulaic, 00s U2 at it’s best, but that’s still what it is.

If songs are great, they'll fit; I think the whole thematic unity argument is just an excuse for repetition. Great songs make a great album. Mercy, if reworked to become more dynamic and have even better lyrics, could be great and I hope they do it.

Haven't opened by super duper version yet, so I haven't heard Winter.

The fact that Mercy is collecting dust and Crazy Tonight was released is the biggest travesty ever committed by the boys.

Please. They have released far, far worse tunes.

And Crazy Tonight is actually pretty good.

Crazy Tonight is gorgeous pop-rock, and tone-wise really fits that section of NLOTH, but for me suffers from being a tad unfocused thematically.

I agree. Why put a song on an album If You Already Have It.I thought Mercy was unreleased I only heard it on You Tube.Is It availiable through I Tunes or did everyone just download it?

Its been passed around by fans, its never been a b-side or even released as a rare track.

I haven't listened to both songs that much, but I don't think they are that good as is. Maybe if they were reworked and revised, I would appreciate them more.
