i'm convinced that homework question is a trick question. even wikipedia seems to think so: Category:Mountain ranges of New Zealand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Each week she brings home a worksheet with questions about NZ. Each week the answers start with a different letter of the alphabet. We're up to 'D' this week...all the others are easy enough to google and find, but that one is a real WTF one. After Ax suggested it I found it under Dunstan Range, but yeah, it's fucking dodgy if you ask me!

:cute: that's awesome. i don't believe we did anything like that in school...for america obvs. not nz.

how do the mumbai hills get a wikipedia page, but the dunstan range doesn't?

superthread wiki project?

I've been amazed at some of the geographical features in New Zealand that don't have Wikipedia articles. The Ashburton River is another glaring omission the last time I checked.

Something should be done about this. Hell, I've written enough Kiwi geography articles already; what's a few more?

 The only one of those I can pronounce with any confidence is Ngaruawahia!

Waikouaiti is my favourite to trip up even New Zealanders. Tends to be a good way to spot who knows Otago and who doesn't, since it's a bit of a Shibboleth. Its local pronunciation is like Whack-ow-eet, not Why-kaw-eet-ee.

she won't attempt wellington or christchurch now.

Khan, the real pronunciation of Wellington is Wey-ig-town.

next question.....

This town was named after the people of Denmark.....

Remember it's in NZ and MUST start with D....

:crack:

Dannevirke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

named after the Danevirke, a defensive formation constructed across the neck of the Jutland peninsula in the Viking Age. Its name means "Danes' works" in the Danish language.

beyond that? no idea.

alexandra was named after alexandra of denmark, but it doesn't begin wif d, natch.

I'm sure I'll stop being so excited when I get outbid but for now...

Remember, people: never ever go to the KFC in Dannevirke!

I don't know a single person who's eaten there and not got food poisoning.

I'll add that to my New Zealand Survival Guide.

So, the new U2.com is up.

"Hello and welcome to a new U2.Com, days ahead of the new album."

They say this like it's an achievement.
