By releasing Get on Your Boots as the first single. After hearing the album I feel if they had released Crazy Tonight then Magnificent then I feel the anticiaption from the non hardcore fans would be greater. I mean imagine one of these 2 songs performed live at the Grammy's & Brit's.

I know there is still time but being a U2 fan since War when I heard Get on Your Boots it was a big let down and for the first time I was worried that this album would be a dud. This is even more so after hearing the other songs on the record. I do not compare it to the Fly as this was a much much better song. To be honest Get on Your Boots is one of their worst singles ever but fits well in the album.

For what it is worth I think Magnificent is one of the best songs they have written. I also love the new album and I too am finding myself not skipping any songs unlike the last 2 albums. I too will be buying all the different versions after all I am a U2 tragic.

I just hope by releasing GOYB they have not put people off from buying this truely Magnificent album.

It would be really interesting to see how Crazy Tonight would have functioned as the lead single.

I think they made the right decision. The song needs to be on the album. It could have been huge. It wasn't. But if it hadn't been the first single, people would be lambasting it as filler.

Having it being the lead single to me, gives the whole project a greater sense of cohesion

But....it is filler. First single or not, it's the worst song on the album. I enjoy the playlist I made without it better than the original album.

It's their obligation to release Magnificent as a single, as far as I'm concerned. If they don't, they clearly want their album to fail. Crazy Tonight can be single #3, and then they can get into the studio and work on the sequel.

I gotta disagree, at first I didn't like Boots, but it makes sense now to have that as a first single.

They should not have played the Grammys because no one knew the lyrics. But the next single should go with the flow and be Crazy then maybe Magnificent or Fez. I'm leaning towards Fez but Magnificent rules too much.

They should have released Crazy Tonight or Magnificent as the lead single.

Both songs would've been infinitely better at the award shows they've performed at since the release of the single. I'm just hoping that once the album comes out, they start mixing in other songs like the two I mentioned.

The public doesn't like GOYB, whether you like it or not. I enjoy the song, but It's easy to see that it's not a song for the casual fan. I hope the album's performance doesn't suffer because of it: NLOTH is a classic, it should do well commercially. If the release of GOYB first ends up stalling its sales, I'll be hugely disappointed.

I like Boots. It's not great by any means, but I like it.

Actually I think NLOTH would have made a good first single. Crazy would be bad I think because it's not energetic enough.

+1

The local paper here has a what's hot on you tube. They've linked to the GOYB video and stated along the lines of 'check out this great video by the aging Irish rockers for their woeful first single'.

I know a lot of casual listeners feel this way - great video, sucky song.

I wonder, in hindsight (which is a marvellous thing), whether they should have released the video at the same time as the song? That way it may have been received a little better by the general public.

Boots was a flop, it's U2's worst charting lead single since Fire. And worst charting single since If God Will send His Angels. hey really made a bad choice with that as the lead single

plus Boots is the worst song on the album anyway

Everyones U2's marketing manager arent they?

What is your opinion on U2's next single? It's not a bad thing to have an opinion even if we're not part U2's marketing team.

The fact is they are going to release a few singles and vids what do you think should be their next?

I think it's actually an important part of the album. But it was a poor choice of lead single. They needed to make a sharp break from the previous album, and the song is reminiscent of Vertigo.

This is one of those albums that only certain fans like.

Yes we are: We are the people that are actually buying the single, supporting it and moving it in the chart. the only ones buying it it seems.

I honestly think our opinons matter on this forum, the equal signs on the cover were published and the majority on interference, the biggest u2 forum, seemed to not like them and they appear to have been largely played down since.

We'll see, but I don't think so. I expect it will be more universally loved than the last 4..... HTDAAB, ATYCLB, POP, and ZOOROPA all remain controversal.

Not disagreeing, I think this album is going to be loved but I have a feeling it will be trashed by the critics and even U2 fans. I like it so far but i need more days to listen. I l already know that Magnificent, Crazy and Fez are awesome for singles. Then we have MoS that is our own beuty of a song but too long for commercial. If it's gonna be better than the last 3 albums you mentioned only time will tell. (I hope)

I don't know, I think this is an album critics will love but the general population won't go nuts over. It's too much of a grower and the public will lose attention. On another message board I read people are saying it's not too good and all the songs sound the same.

But I am glad they wrote an album of good music rather than an album that would be "universally loved" by the public, because the public are idiots.

I honestly don't think there are any great single type songs on this album, so Boots was just as good as any.

Boots is still, to me, U2's best lead single and one of its top tunes ever. It really goes beyond my understanding its lack of sucess and praise.

Well, as far as critics: Rolling Stone just gave it 5 stars.

I think Moment of Surrender is my favorite song period. They could do a single edit. Or just give the radio stations the finger and release a 7:30 single.... Who knows? But I actually expect people to GET that this is U2 playing at a higher level than before. Moving in a circle wider than the square they've found themselves fenced in by.

GOYB is not a filler. its a great track, but maybe Stand Up Comedy wouldve been a better 1st single choice.

I still really like Boots.. its in my top 5 fav from the album.

You know the funny thing is I didn't like that song at first, then when I saw the vid I really liked it. I thought their Grammy appearance was lacking but that's because no one knew the lyrics. How can you sing a song if you don't know the lyrics?

Something is coming soon from the boys I can feel it, possibly another single, what would you like? They might even switch from Boots to something else Wouldn't that be something !

Gotta agree, at first I thought it was junk (changed my mind after seeeing the vid it's a great song) but they need rockers to go on the radio. Makes sense. But U2 please don't go on Grammys when no one knows your lyrics.

I think a big part of it was that it wasn't a markedly different sound than Vertigo.

that has nothing to do with it... it's a strange sounding song, it's not your classic song structure, and many people simply don't get it... including those who very much want to get into it, they just can't.

it has nothing to do with it sounding like vertigo.

a friend of mine who's big into music who's a u2 fan but not a nut or anything... just likes 'em. his exact quote, which i've heard often, was "what's up with the new u2 song... it's strange" and "i just can't get into it, i'm trying, i just can't."

again, music is objective, and i like the song... but it is a strange tune, and strange tunes don't really chart well anymore. there is no time for a grower in today's A.D.D. society.

I think Boots is great. And I love that its as polarizing as it is. I think there are 10 realllllly strong tracks on this album, and Boots is one of them. It works really well in the middle of the record (I'm still eternally grateful that it isn't the first track on the album... that would have been disastrous).

I don't think Stand Up Comedy (my least favorite on NLOTH) would have done much more for them, in leading up to the album. But Breathe or Crazy Tonight may have snagged some more pre-album accolades.

Most people here have not seemed like Boots at first. Some say they like it better in the context of the album. In my view, Boots was a terrible single. Single= standalone song. U2 fans will always buy U2 albums. A single is meant to cast the net out further than the fans, in my view. Hence the promotion at the Grammys and Brits. Boots sucks as a single because not many people actually like it on first listen, which is a goal of releasing a single.

I think Magnificent or Crazy Tonight would have been fantastic first singles. But what do I know...
