Ed McMahon has passed away

Lowell native Ed McMahon, the legendary "Tonight Show" sidekick, has died, NBC News is reporting.

McMahon, 86, was battling cancer and he was recently hospitalized in Los Angeles after coming down with pneumonia.

McMahon became famous on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson but was also known for his commercials and as the host of "Star Search." His struggle with bankruptcy also pushed him back into the news and won him support -- and jobs -- from the industry.
