Iron horse, with your new commitment to engage and as someone who brings up Orwell a lot I'd like to hear your thoughts on this?

Yes I will. My first post on a U2 forum years ago concerned Orwell and Huxley.

It contained a quote by Neil Postman from his 1979 book Amusing Ourselves to Death. I will look it up and post it again later on down the track.

In reply to your question:

In 1984 and Animal Farm, Orwell was warning about the evils of leftist socialism and leftist communism and their love of government domination over the people. People like Trump who want to strip the government of its power and return the power to the people were the heroes to Orwell...as were most heroes of science fiction like Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The hero is the individual that resists socialist totalitarian government and works to destroy the unnatural grip of socialism on individualism and creativity and free expression.

Orwell spent years in England as a communist until he fully grasped the evils of a few leftist socialist bureaucrats (aka USSR) dominating (aka USSR) dominating the people and how far they were willing to go to subjugate the people. So I get red flags when I see a president circumventing the US Constitution by creating de facto laws through Executive Fiat attacking the Constitutional rights of the people.
I’m not follower of the Star Wars films and story, but I have read this Orwellian warning was one of the themes in a Star Wars prequel.

And now we have the following situation: If a girl or woman who became pregnant from one of the ISIS idiots wants to terminate the pregnancy, we cannot discuss it with her anymore. We cannot publically advocate for a woman's access to abortion, either; a problem for many survivors because abortions ar illegal in the country, but they are not willing to live on if they have to take the baby to term.

Just another means of punishing women, which is what the obsession with abortion really is all about with these so-called Christian men.

Maybe we should all start yelling that Trump wants raped girls to carry ISIS terrorist babies.

It is crude, but simple, and the sort of thing that we'd hear if this was President Obama.

He asked you about Kellyanne Conway's "alternative facts". It's almost as if you totally lack any kind of reading comprehension.

This CIA meeting is an absolute embarrassment. He stood in front of the wall which he claims to have paid great respect and lied about the vote, lied about the crowd, claimed everyone in the room voted for him, god stopped the rain for his speech, bragged about how many magazine covers he's been on, and in a speech that made a slight mention of ISIS he called the media the worst humans.

And to make things worse, unsourced reports are claiming he padded the room with supporters that would laugh and clap at the partisan and more ridiculous aspects of the speech, so that he could say he got a standing ovation.

I understand why she used the term.

For example, this morning I posted the FACTS as a comment on several liberal and leftists memes on my Facebook feed this morning.

So you could say I am posting the "alternative facts" because some will read these memes and new reports as FACTS. Some will only read the message or headline posted on the meme or news report without ever checking the statement for accuracy or the credibility of the source.

i guess TPP must have been one of the facts they "disagreed with"

The Bernie kids, too. They must be loving Trump these days, after all, the Bernie wants out of the TPP. It's great that the Bernie kids can do quickly find ground with the Trumpets.

It is not an alternative fact that Trump's inauguration was better attended than Obama's. It's a lie.

Period.

WaPo.

Days after being sworn in, President Trump insisted to congressional leaders invited to a reception at the White House that he would have won the popular vote had it not been for millions of illegal votes, according to people familiar with the meeting.

Trump has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that widespread voter fraud caused him to lose the popular vote to Hillary Clinton, even while he clinched the presidency with an electoral college victory.

Two people familiar with the meeting said Trump spent about 10 minutes at the start of the bipartisan gathering rehashing the campaign. He also told them that between 3 million and 5 million illegal votes caused him to lose the popular vote.

Lying liar.

He's completely unhinged.

No, that is something entirely different and this isn't addressing the point.

The point is that his press team flat out lied to you, and they she is normalizing the lie by using the term "alternative facts".

Basically you have a president that is telling you 1+1=3, when the provable reality is 2.

This very Orwellian and it should scare you. The context to which it was originally written doesn't matter, it's the techniques being used in the present.

well, i meant Trump's anti-China reasoning behind it - when China wasn't even party to the agreement (but probably will be now the US has pulled out)

Bernie's and Trump's reasons/agendas are very different lol, and you can bet the outcomes would ultimately be very different

No. Try again.

There is no such thing as "alternative facts."

fact
a thing that is indisputably the case.
"the most commonly known fact about hedgehogs is that they have fleas"
synonyms: reality, actuality, certainty;

Reality. Not like the kind of TV star you guys decided was a good fit for the highest office in the land, but actual reality.

i take it you are pro-choice then, as you could't possibly believe in the government's right to dictate what a woman does with her body. right?

President Trump had a busy first Monday.

He started shaking things up with a few executive orders among other things.

I really like the one on a freeze on federal hiring.
It's about time.

Thoughts?

Across the board hiring freezes aren't effective at fixing anything. If you're just going to institute a hiring freeze without taking into account the individual agencies' missions, workloads and staffing requirements, then it seems that all you're really doing is making it harder for those agencies to do their jobs.

I agree that general hiring freezes are not the most efficient, but I also do think that the bureaucracy is bloated and there is $ to be saved. Temporary hiring freezes (directed at particular areas which should not be too difficult to identify) combined with attrition are always better than layoffs.

How about Trump lying that there were 3-5 million illegal immigrants that cost him the popular vote.

Thoughts?

Gallup:

President Donald Trump is the first elected president in Gallup's polling history to receive an initial job approval rating below the majority level. He starts his term in office with 45% of Americans approving of the way he is handling his new job, 45% disapproving and 10% yet to form an opinion. Trump now holds the record for the lowest initial job approval rating as well as the highest initial disapproval rating in Gallup surveys dating back to Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Job disapproval ratings entering office are hilarious:

Donald Trump 45%
Barack Obama 12
George W. Bush 25
Bill Clinton 20
George H. W. Bush 6
Ronald Reagan 13
Jimmy Carter 8
Richard Nixon 5
John F. Kennedy 6
Dwight Eisenhower 7

Let's cut 75% of the FDA regulations. Like we don't have enough recalls already.

Guess if with less regulation, there'll be less recalls

If it's also accompanied by studies and concentrated, well-thought out plans to increase government efficiency, hiring practices, accountability for poor perfoming employees, etc, then I don't either.

It is my guess Trump has taken those issues to mind.

My oldest son is a firefighter for our state's Forestry commission. When he is off duty he has another tractor he uses to do landscaping and other jobs. Last year he worked for a large crew building a golf course for a contractor from NYC.

My son met him during a lunch break one day on the job site and they talked. He told my son he has met Trump several times in the course of his business deals. He said people make a mistake of underestimating Trump based Trump's unique manner of phrasing spoken sentences. He does love to pepper the adjectives around and ring out hyperboles.

However, the guy told my son, Trump does study, seek advice ,and carefully plan every move before committing to a plan.

The percentage of civil servants as a total of the population has declined consistently over the last decades. Not sure why this is such a big deal. Also: a hiring freeze tends to affect the poor disproportionately (which is par for the course for this administration's policies).

In other news:

Trump Is Said to Keep James Comey as F.B.I. Director

I mean, why wouldn't he, right?

I'm not sure how Trump has the time, pretty sure this is all delegated.

Will you address our questions as well?

President Trump had a busy first Monday.

He did? I thought he barely did anything. Certainly not even close to the things he promised he would do on his first day in the office.

He started shaking things up with a few executive orders among other things.

I thought that Republicans considered executive orders unconstitutional (or at least an overreach by the president). Or does this only matter when the president is a Democrat?
And why is the freeze on federal hiring about time? Under Obama the number of government employees had already dramatically decreased (unlike the big government policies of Republican presidents). So what is the extra value of a federal hiring freeze? Apart from being a symbolic gesture (like some of his other executive orders) that is. And creating a mismatch between what's needed and the skills of your employment force.
