People close to the band dismissed that idea, but said that U2’s deal with Apple would involve the release of new music in an innovative way, and Apple’s event would partly serve as a big, splashy stunt to generate publicity

No, it's the idea of them quoting three sources engaged with the event, this time, and not a random twitter post. It's also just detailed enough, as well as including the decline for comment. I don't know. I'm not gonna be disappointed if nothing happens, but this is the first that I've actually begun to expect something.
