My understanding is it was a song he and this group called the Lost Boys wrote. I am not sure if it was written soley for the Sopranos, but I remember it on the soundtrack and in one of the episodes with Tony and Gloria.
I think there was something on his official website where he was talking about the song, lemme see if I can find it.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was *just* for The Sopranos or if it came from somewhere else. It's such great song.
