Part of an internal communication at our company:

In Case of Emergency (ICE) initiative
You may have heard about ICE -- In Case of Emergency -- a campaign that originated in the United Kingdom. ICE encourages people to enter an emergency contact number in their mobile phone's address book under the heading ICE. ICE allows paramedics and/or police to contact a person you've designated in case of an emergency. It only takes a few seconds to do:

Update an existing entry with the ICE distinction in the name field. (e.g., ICE Jim Doe)
Or create a new entry with a unique primary number preceded by ICE.
Make sure your ICE contact also has all pertinent medical information and is prepared to make decisions on your behalf.
Regardless of where you live or work, taking a few simple steps will better prepare you and your team for emergency situations.

I got something in the mail from our city council suggesting also to put in your local police and fire dept #'s into your cell phones. Call these during an emergency instead of 911!

Dialing 911 on a cell phone delays response time as the call is directed to a regional facility instead of the one in your area. The caller is put on hold and then transferred causing a significant delay in getting help.

That's interesting. With the e911 program (when fully implimented), wireless providers will be able to provide your location to emergency responders based on a call to 911 from a mobile phone.

This is an excellent topic and glad to see it posted here. There was a news show on one of the 20/20 or 60 Minutes shows recently about it....the ICE thing being worldwide. Great idea so thanks for posting here! Spread the word.
