WHO'S THAT WITH BONO?
Oct 4 2002

U2 frontman voted the most powerful person in music by industry moguls
by Justine Smith

CRUSADING U2 frontman Bono has been named pop's most powerful person.

The Irish rocker's band have sold more than 80million records since forming in 1977.

But Q magazine put him at the top of its 50 Most Powerful People in Music list for his clout with world leaders from George W Bush to the Pope.

Known in the White House as "the pest', the Dubliner formed a close relationship with ex- President Bill Clinton, who would always answer his calls.

Bono even has the ear of right-winger Bush, who acknowledged the singer's role in convincing him to dramatically increase international aid this year.

The singer's relentless global campaigning as the figurehead of the Jubilee 2000 campaign saw ?70million wiped off Third World debts by the West.

The 42-year-old father-of-three, real name Paul Hewson, has also recorded with Pavarotti and Sinatra, and brought John Hume and David Trimble together on a Belfast stage in the lead- up to Northern Ireland's historic vote on the Good Friday Agreement.

Along with school friends Adam Clayton, the Edge - real name David Evans - and Larry Mullen, Bono has made 10 platinum albums and performed some of the most enduring anthems of the last two decades.

Controversial rapper Eminem, 29, was voted in at No.3 by senior music executives for gaining control of his own career.

Sir Paul McCartney, 60, is named alongside John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, 69, at No.9 for their influence as leaders of Apple Corps.

Other notable inclusions include Sir Elton John, at No.40, and, at 48, Sharon Osbourne - wife and manager of wild rocker Ozzie, possibly the only person in the world who could have kept him in a fit enough state to perform.
