OK. I've been debating posting this on here because there aren't a lot of chapters that I really *can* post on here :sexywink:, but I'm getting such good feedback on it at my fanfic community that I figured I need to share it here too and those who want to read the 'fun' chapters we will work that out :p

As some of you know me from my EYKIW story, I'm an Edge girl, and I seem to make even Bono girls fall for my Edges, but now I thought it was time for a treat - time to invite a Bono girl to write with me and appease the masses - LOL. So, I've got a guest writer on this one - 1screamingangel. This story is a dual effort between her and I, she writes Bono, I write Edge, and it's great fun...

Yes, this plot is truly impossible and never happened, but it's such fun to imagine - I hope you'll enjoy our pre-Joshua Tree tales.... and I present... LOST HIGHWAY....

Title: Lost Highway
Authors: 1screamingangel & wo_speaking
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: None of these fine Irishmen are mine, and this is complete and utter fiction.
A/N: AU - some characters you may recognize from certain massive Irish rock bands... a bit OOC, but interesting nonetheless... Also, you may recognize the locale of Bodie, California as the place where Anton Corbijn took famous photos of them during the Joshua Tree era - this was the inspiration for this story.

***********************************

The desert sky opened up into a galaxy of stars as the two women continued their journey east to Las Vegas. It was getting late and their gas tank was threatening empty when they came upon the small town of Bodie, California – population nothing. It was an old mining town, preserved as somewhat of a tourist attraction by the locals. The main street was littered with decaying buildings and old West charm – and luckily a bar and a gas station just up the road in another small town called Bridgeport.

Melody was sick of driving; they could have taken the short route but decided to take a long, winding journey through the Sierra Nevada instead. They had never been to the mountains before and now was as good a time as any, Samantha supposed as she sat perusing a map of California one day as they planned their trip.

They were on their way to Vegas to look for work – they grew tired of their lives in San Francisco and decided to start anew in Nevada. Las Vegas was becoming a mecca of tourism and they wanted to get in on the action. They were both in their early 20s and beautiful, they thought it would be no problem to start working at a casino – maybe even become showgirls some day.

“Sam, looks like this town has a hotel ... should we spend the night?” Mel asked, “I don’t want to miss too much of the scenery if we keep driving all night ...”

“Sure, why not – I’m ready for some adventure. Let’s fuel up and book a room, maybe go have a drink with the locals,” Sam snickered, “all 10 of them!”

They pulled out front of the old west building that had a neon motor lodge sign and walked into the office. A rather large woman was sitting towards the back of the room watching a television that didn’t seem to want to stay on its picture too long.

“Mel, how could anyone watch TV with that much static? We really are out in the middle of nowhere,” Sam whispered.

The building looked to be an old saloon like they had seen in the westerns they watched on Sunday mornings growing up. Sam expected a cowboy to ride in any moment and Melody thought a saloon girl would come walking down the rickety old steps any minute, waiting for her cowboy. They had both been completely in love with Michael Landon growing up. He was the clean cut one, and even though he was old enough to be their father these days he was ever-preserved in T.V. land in his handsome jacket, cowboy hat and his charming smile. Mel and Sam were suckers for a man in a cowboy hat with a sweet smile.

That was part of the reason they were traveling to Vegas; they wanted to get out of their boring, dead end lives. A couple of years of community college under their belts and neither one could decide what they wanted to do with their lives. So they choose a road trip to make some money then see what they could find after that.

The woman turned to look at them and smiled.

“Evening girls, need a place to stay for the night?”

“We do, do you have a room?” Mel asked, doubting this was going to be a problem. It was so quiet once the clerk turned the television down, she was sure there were no other guests at this 1800’s converted saloon.

Sam, who loved a cowboy more than Mel, began a string of questions at the clerk who seemed more than willing to stand and talk to them.

“What was this building back in the day?” was Sam’s first question.

“Why, it was a saloon, of course, can’t ya tell?” clerk lady answered.

“Any famous fights take place here?” was Sam’s next question.

“There have always been rumors in the town that Billy the Kid slept here. He may have, may not have,” clerk lady answered slowly.

“When does the gas station open up?” Mel inquired.

“Not ‘til morning young lady, ‘bout 10am or so, whenever ole Joe can get up and get himself in. Ya know he suffers from the arthritis and some days it takes longer to get to the station to open up. If you’re in a hurry I can call over to his place now and see if he wouldn’t mind helping out you two pretty girls.”

“It’s ok, Hester.” Mel answered as she had just seen the name on the desk behind the clerk. “We want to stay the night and go grab a bite to eat. There is a place to eat in town that would be open now isn’t there?”

“Sure is, bar is right across the street and down a way, almost at the edge of town. Can’t miss it, it’s the only building down there lit up. Bars always do well, no matter how small a town it. The bartender makes a good sandwich and pours a good beer.

“Here’s your key, girls. If you need anything else, let me know before I go on home at 11. Otherwise I will see ya in the morning. Check out is at noon, but we’re pretty flexible ‘bout that.” Hester laughed at her inside joke.

“Thanks,” Sam said as she took the key from Hester.

Samantha and Melody debated whether to take their bags upstairs or just walk down to the bar. Their growling stomachs reminded them they had not eaten since early in the day so they decided to walk to the bar and leave the bags in the trunk.
