Give U2 a Warm Welcome in Brussels

Editor's Note: Interference.com was sent the following announcement from a group of fans in Europe about ringing in U2's first show in Brussels on June 10th.

Several months ago a few members of U2.com came up with the idea to give our favourite band a Warm Welcome when they arrive on European ground.

The reasons for that welcome are multiple: the postponing of the tour, problems with the pre-sales and general-sales, the anger and frustration with a lot of people who have been going to U2 concerts for years, and now all of a sudden find themselves without tickets, the mega prices on Ebay, … . Due to Larry’s letter, we all know how shocked U2 was.

Reasons enough to let them know that all the fans, long time as well as fresh, know what U2 stands for. Is there a better way of showing that, than by giving them a welcome that even they have never seen before. Those who have been to a U2 concert before, know that you get magic, when the audience and the band come together. And that is exactly what we want.

We want to reach as many people as possible, and ask them to wear a white band during the concert. The link to The One Campaign (www.one.org) and its partners (www.whiteband.org), is quite obvious.

Not an easy task of course. Making the bands ourselves? Very ambitious, not to say unrealistic. Have them made made, better, but who will pay for that? To work with a partner, by preference one that would be approved by U2, seemed a good idea.

PROTOS

(www.protos.be) is a Belgian NGO (humanitarian organization) which exists for 25 years. Relying on its experiences in the field of water, PROTOS advocates an equitable, participatory and sustainable water management in the North and the South. Together with the local inhabitants, PROTOS sets up water-related programms in Africa (Benin, Burundi, East-Congo, Mali, Rwanda, Uganda) and in 2 other regions : Haïti and Ecuador … . A partner that fits perfectly in the Millennium Challenge of the United Nation (the seventh), that is a partner of The One Campaign. An organization that might suit very well with the U2 crowd.

Hear our call : Bring a white band to the concert!!

You are supposed to put that white band around your wrist or head right before U2 enters the stage.

We’re thinking of bands of 90 centimetre x 8 centimetre (35,43 inch x 3,15) - see photo . But if you wish to be creative, go right ahead. As long as it’s white and you can make it visible at your body without blocking the view of your neighbours.

So snap those old sheets, pillowcases, T-shirts ………

If you insist on writing something on your band then please write on the band:

‘Warm welcome U2 - Brussels // June 10th 2005’

Will you join? Please let us know click here.

Thanks Pascal!
