U2 fans gutted at 30-minute sell-out
After queuing for up to 14 hours in a bitter wind, hundreds of die-hard U2 fans were left disappointed in the North West after concert tickets sold out in under 30 minutes.
Hopefuls began to gather outside Derry's two Ticketmaster outlets yesterday as early as 6pm for a chance see the biggest band in the world in their home town this summer.
But when the shutters went up at 8am, tickets for June's Croke Park gigs sold out in record time - 22 minutes at Cool Discs - leaving exhausted punters frustrated.
Speculation was today mounting that the band would hold a third gig in June.
"People were getting pretty hot-headed this morning," veteran fan James Hargan observed from outside Soundsaround record shop this morning.
"Most of us thought that queuing for 12 hours would guarantee a ticket. Otherwise we would all have stayed at home in front of the computer pressing buttons."
Tony McMonagle and his three friends pitched their plastic chairs and their car outside Cool Discs at 6pm yesterday and were first through the door as the Guildhall clock struck eight.
"Friday was sold out before we even had our hands in our pockets as was all the standing room for Saturday, so we had to pay an extra £10 each for sitting, which is not what we were after really.
"We took it in shifts to sleep in the car, stand outside and go to the pub. We wouldn't do it for any other band but U2 are the biggest band in Ireland and you have an association with them. Going to see U2 is like a national day out."
Cool Discs owner Lee Mason commented: "It was manic. We sold out in 22 minutes and that's lousy on all the people who queued all night.
"Its likely there will be a third gig announced for the Sunday so hopefully people will get a second chance then."
