Thought that it was very interesting

HOT START: Los Angeles' favorite sons, Red Hot Chili Peppers, score their highest
debut on The Billboard Hot 100 (No. 55) and Mainstream Rock Tracks (No. 12) and
second-highest on Modern Rock Tracks (No. 9) with "By the Way." The Chili Peppers'
highest Modern debut was the eventual No. 1 "Soul to Squeeze," which entered at
No. 6 in August 1993.

"Way" is the highest Mainstream Rock debut thus far this year and the highest debut
on Modern Rock Tracks since Bush's "The Chemicals Between Us" debuted at No. 8
in September 1999. "Way" is the Chili Peppers' 19th top 10 song on Modern Rock
Tracks, breaking a three-way tie the band held with Stone Temple Pilots and
Smashing Pumpkins. It now ranks fourth, trailing U2 (29 top 10s), Pearl Jam (27)
and R.E.M. (25). The Chili Peppers can boast the longest history on Modern Rock
Tracks of any act currently on that list, making their first chart appearance in 1989
with "Knock Me Down." Next in line is Weezer at No. 35 with "Dope Nose," as the
band first charted with "Undone (The Sweater Song)" in 1994.

When did the Modern Rock Track chart begin? I thought it began in 1990, but I guess I'm wrong since U2 has 29 songs in the top 10. There haven't been that many songs released in the in 90's, that hit the Modern Rock top 10. "Please" is one. I'm not sure about the Zooropa singles?

Does anyone have a complete list of U2 songs ranking in this chart? I think STING2 has that Modern Rock Tracks chart book from 1990-1995, which list the week/year/chart ranking of all songs.

Thanks

songs on the chart

not sure when it began, but just off the top of my head songs I know or suspect that have been top ten:

Night and Day?
HMTMKMKM?
Mysterious Ways
The Fly
One
Even Better
Who's Gonna Ride?
Until the end of the world?
Numb?
Lemon?
Stay?
Please
Discotheque
Staring at the Sun
Last Night on Earth?
Ground Beneath her Feet?
Beautiful Day
Walk On
Elevation?
Stuck - I really don't think so

That's only 19 so i don't know what the others would be. Anyone have a list?

Well, I thought I should sooner or later getting around to putting this up. I have the BILLBOARD ROCK TRACKS book that has all the artist and songs that charted on both the Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart and Modern Rock Tracks Chart up to the November 18, 1995 cut off date. This book came out in 1996. Seems like yesterday but Gosh, its been 6 years now. The MAINSTREAM ROCK TRACKS chart started on 3/21/81. The MODERN ROCK TRACKS chart started on 9/10/88. I'll start first with the Modern Rock Tracks chart and then go to the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Will have to fill in the data after 1995 ourselves either by what we know or digging through a library that has back issues of Billboard. I'll start of with the Modern Rock Tracks chart first. U2 ON THE MODERN ROCK TRACKS CHART 9/10/88 TO 11/18/95

Jesus Christ 9/17/88 : #9 PK : 4 WKS
Desire 10/8/88 : #1(5) PK : 11 WKS
Angel Of Harlem 11/5/88 : #3 PK : 17 WKS
When Love Comes To Town 11/19/88 : #10 PK : 13 WKS

Everlasting Love 7/8/89 : #11 PK : 8 WKS

The Fly 10/26/91 : #1(2) PK : 12 WKS
Mysterious Ways 11/23/91 : #1(9) PK : 13 WKS
One 1/4/92 : #1(1) PK : 23 WKS
Until The End Of The World 2/1/92 : #4 PK : 8 WKS
Even Better Than The Real Thing 7/4/92 : #5 PK : 13 WKS
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses 10/24//92 : #7 PK : 9 WKS

Stay(Faraway, So Close) 12/4/93 : #15 PK : 14 WKS
Hold Me , Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me 6/10/95 : #1(4) PK : 15 WKS

The date after each song is when the song first entered the chart. The first number is the Peak position it reached on the chart PK. Numbers in brackets are number of weeks at #1 or #2. The last number of course is the total weeks on chart WKS.

By the way, there is no way U2 has had 29 top 10s on the Modern Rock Charts. I think who ever put that info out got confused. All of those numbers for the artist are all the number of songs they have that made it onto the Modern Rock Chart, not the number of top 10s. U2 has had at most 23 top 10 hits on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. That would mean Sweetest Thing made the top 10, and 4 songs from POP and 4 songs from ATYCLB.

I agree

29 has to be the number of songs that have charted. Counting them up it comes out to just about that amount. Thanks for the info Sting.

Thanks STING2 for the info. And I'm sure you are right - that's 29 songs in the Top 40 on the Modern Rock charts, not 29 top 10 hits there.

As for the remaining songs, I think they are "Sweetest Thing," "Discotheque" (#1), "Staring at the Sun" (#1), "Last Night on Earth," "Please," "Beautiful Day," "Walk On," and "Elevation". But that's only 8 songs - we need one more. Trouble is, which song? I didn't think "Stuck..." made it as it only seemed to chart on the Adult stations and I'm fairly sure that "If God Will Send His Angels" did not make it. Yet clearly one of them did (my $$ is on "Stuck...").

Don't Forget the Ground Beneath Your Feat! That made it in early 2000. You are right though that neather Stuck... nor If God.... made the Modern Rock chart. With 19 songs from 1988 to 1995, then 4 songs from POP, Sweetest Thing and Ground Beneath...., and then 3 Songs from ATYCLB, still leaves one missing. hmmmm... this is curious. Perhaps a cover tune, but I can't think of one recently they did that got airplay. Perhaps Stuck... or IF God did make the chart but I don't remember them making it.
