freedom?

a hateful man knows not the face of love
a vain man knows not the face of truth
a pious man knows not the pain of openness
are they prisoners who know nothing of freedom?

a sleepy worker who can't know the sunlight
a complex thinker who can't know everyday reality
a restless journeyman who can't know a home
are they prisoners wno know nothing of freedom?

what is this thing?
where is that place?
are we all trapped,
do we all wear chains,
are we all stuck,
and is it all the same?

a painter who couldn't stop to look
a speaker who couldn't stop to listen
a worker who couldn't stop to rest
are they prisoners who know nothing of freedom?

a dreamer who can't sleep
a child who can't speak
a parent who can't play
a singer who can't talk
a dancer without music
a lover who can't think
a wife with no husband
a rabbi who can't pray
a priest without a parish
a family without food
a worker without pay
a carpenter without wood
an astronomer in the clouds
an astronaut on the earth
a painter with no canvas
a sculptor with no clay
a poet without a pen...

I think that a lot of people mistake their "rights" as their freedom. I don't think that freedom is anything that can be legislated or mandated. I do believe that freedom is a matter of personal choice - what will I allow myself to do.

I liken this poem to Bono's song "Falling At Your Feet," with the resign but without the humility. I have a problem bowing down to the grace of God somedays... this poem reflects that. Maybe someday.

Come on, come on! Be good to me...

a child who can't speak

I have a child who can't speak and she is a prisoner. I keep looking for the key to let her out. I hope I find it soon!
