I have seen a lot of posts in here regarding issues of sadness and depression (and I'm not pointing fingers--I'm equally guilty). However, I ran across this article the other day, and it made me think. How many of you remember what life was like before the internet? Okay, now how many of you here can admit feeling these symptoms of sadness / depression / anxiety / etc. amplified when being on the internet for long periods of time?

Something to think about, as I'm pondering so many questions myself...

NEW YORK (Reuters) --The more time an office worker toils in front of a computer, the more likely he or she is to suffer a host of physical, mental and sleep-related ills, Japanese researchers report.

While video display terminal (VDT) use has become commonplace in many types of jobs, there is little information on how long a person can safely use a computer each day. To investigate, Dr. Tetsuya Nakazawa of Chiba University and colleagues surveyed over 25,000 office workers who responded to three questionnaires between 1995 and 1997.

Participants answered questions about the amount of time they spent in front of a VDT, their sleep habits, and physical and mental ailments including headache, low back pain, eyestrain, depression and anxiety. Their findings are published in the October issue of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.

"In our study, we found a significant relationship between duration of daily VDT use and physical symptoms," even after adjusting for other factors that could influence the results, the authors write.

'Reluctance to go to work'
Office workers stuck in front of a computer most commonly complained of headache, eyestrain, joint pain and stiff shoulders.

Mental symptoms such as lethargy, anxiety and "reluctance to go to work," as well as sleep-related problems including insomnia and fatigue, were most common among workers who spent more than 5 hours a day glued to their computer screen.

"This result suggested that the effect of duration of daily VDT use on these scores has a threshold effect, and the prevention of mental disorder and sleep disorder requires the restriction of VDT use to less than 5 hours per day," the researchers write.

While the type of computer work the study participants performed varied considerably, as did the size of the computer used and the work environment, "it should be emphasized that even under such working conditions, our results were extremely consistent over a 3-year period," Nakazawa and colleagues note.

The researchers call for more research into the relationship between computer use and physical, mental and sleep symptoms.

I believe it. I wish my problems were simple enough to blame the internet on. Because that way I could turn it off, throw out my computer and forget about it.

However my problems extend well outside of the Internet and have been with me for years. It just seems that now I am finally able to face the realities of my life. I have had to take a step back to look at my job, family, career path, goals in life, etc. I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that my birthday is coming up soon. I have had done an assessment to see if I am where I want to be as a 27 year old going on 28 year old single female and it looks like I am nowhere close to where I thought or like to be.

It is sad to know that there are a lot of us on here right now that are dealing with stressful events right now.

i can believe it, but i dont really believe im depressed. check that, i know im not depressed.

there are times when i do suffer from depression...and there was a time that the internet became an addiction to me. it took me a short time to get a handle on what my priorities are in life; for one, my six year old daughter. when i do get depressed, I have to snap out of it for mine and my baby's sake. kinda hard to do that when i've never been 'treated' for it. and i can't afford to see a doctor for that either. thank God i have my mom to smack me out of it when it happens. having a computer changed my life because its opened me up to a whole new world that i never knew existed. do i stay on the net now because im depressed? sometimes. but not always. now its the pepsi.

I would perhaps consider contacting area hospitals and see if they have any mental health free care programs. They do exist, but they don't often advertise it.

yeah. notice, in that thread where we post the saddest days of our lives, two of the three i listed were pre-internet for me. and the one i listed on there when i did have the internet had nothing to do with it, cuz it was when my granny died.

I suffer from those things now. :tsk: Well, I think the reason why I'm even more addicted to the internet is that I get to 'talk' to a lot of people and it doesn't matter if I know them or not. I've had moments of utter loneliness :(. I try to think it's more because I'm still a bit new to the place where I'm at now and I don't have much friends. I was never a negative type of person. :) = me, but there ARE times. Add to that the fact that this co-worker of mine I really get along with is thinking of transferring to another job, so :(.
 
I think that like just about anything, the internet is neither innately a good or bad thing for a person's mental health but it depends on how they use it. For me it's been really good, I can feel connected to people, I can find resources to help me deal with problems, I feel like I can deal with my "ISSUES" as privately or as publicly as I please. In short: it all depends how you approach it. If you come to the internet depressed, you will probably not leave it that much differently. At worst, you've found something that makes you feel more alone and sadder, at best, you've found something that makes you feel like you're not alone.

Same here. I really only know the people I work with. :slant: We should get together sometime, since we both live in DC and sort of know each other. :) (I haven't looked at the DClist on yahoogroups in a long time. :reject: )

You two are always more than welcome to hang out with me and my friends, meet for a show or whatever. Just ask. We are all fun and entertaining and I really like to go to as many shows as I can.

Do you guys wanna go to the Interpol show or something?
