I used to design a site for a professor of mine as his graduate assistant. I created the whole damn thing, down from setting up the domain name and webspace to designing and maintaining it. I was very meticulous.

Anyhow, I am no longer the official administrator for the site. However, I still want to use the site as a portfolio piece, so I go to check the site, and it is a mess! The new administrator put all of my layers out of alignment, ignored the CSS stylesheet that I used to design the text, and didn't even bother to adjust and move the layers when she added more text. In other words, the text was being drowned out by the box beneath it.

Regardless, I knew it was never the simplest page to update, as I didn't know how to create dynamically-generated sites at the time (which has since changed), but I didn't think it was *that* difficult to update. It has become apparent that the new administrator has only the most basic of HTML skills, and now my site is too complex.

So, to salvage my baby (lol), I went in and fixed it all. How terrible. I wonder if the new admin will notice? :sexywink:

I have no idea what you are talking about, but I think I like it that you did what you did. If you know what I mean.

I understood every single last word of it

And Melon? You had to do it. It was a matter of pride! I only wish I could create dynamic generated sites  Did they not change the password for the site since they left? of did ya go in through the "backdoor?" hehe

LOL...no, they didn't change the password, and, considering that I'm the only one who knows how to do it, they probably never will.

The page isn't dynamic right now, but I think I'm going to create one for them, so that updating it is idiot-proof.

I was going to ask the very same password question, and youve already answered it. Thats a shame about the site, i wonder if theyll notice the changes you made or whether theyll take the credit for themselve ;)

Just proves how much of a geek I am that I actually understood what you were talking about though. :| Granted, I cant be arsed to learn stylesheets, php, or how to do any such dynamic updating things as that. I have friends who know code that I just bother when I feel like making complex stuff, which is never.

However, I suggest you inform them of what they ought to be doing to keep things in order, and that you can fix things for them so they wont have any more trouble without having to do a redesign... for a price, of course ;D

Since we're on the subject of web pages, you all should take a look at my updated site:

http://www.xeidon.com/

It's not fully dynamic, as there are irritating "rebuilds" that I have to do with each template / CSS change, but people can make comments now and I can make entries with ease. :sexywink:

It's far from finished (and I'm sure you'll encounter a few bugs and glaring design errors right now), but let me know what you think thus far!

Foxfire, read up on stylesheets and have your friends show you the basics. It's really not all that hard compared to other coding out there.

Abel, Porn Sites are MY area of expertise

Melon, I like the layout of your site. Will it end up being a personal or business venture?

Before I was so rudely interrupted by a random power outtage, I was going to say something to this effect:

Melon, make sure that your site can handle html special characters, my friend cut a corner or two in coding his site (which allows admins to update the main page by posting in the News Forum) and suffice to say, I tried to quote an irc conversation while doing my news rant, and everything went to hell. Im not sure how he fixed it though, as Im not a coder, Im just there for comic releif and dealing with people.

Cleasai, I know stylesheets are easy, but Im just lazy ;D

i thought you were gonna say you used to design a porn site  :uhoh: :silent:

Hehe, me too :lmao:

I work in graphic design and it's awful when someome changes the good things you created for something horrible just because they have bad taste.

a site I designed... for a certain Irish band's magazine *cough*... which I no longer admin... is more than fucked up now. I feel your pain melon.

You probably already thought of this, but I'd suggest doing screen shots of the site so you can save at least what the design looked like when you worked on it- that way you can have that to put in your portfolio in case someone else mucks it up again.

I would have done the same thing. I happen to have a web site myself. It's not technically great.......or even good :reject: but I put alot of research into it (it's a history site), and I'm proud of it. If someone else screwed it up I'd be *very* angry. It's my baby.
