A question:

Rubin will be the next producer of new u2 album?
In this period they worked only with Eno/Lanois...and Rubin?where was he?

is true that Ali said :
they're working with Eno Lanois and Rubin
album in 2008
tour in 2009
??????????????????????????????

When was the last time Rubin was even officially talked about in conjunction with this album?

We don't know who will produce the new U2. They worked with Eno and Lanois (on a songwriting basis only) in Morocco but according to their album sleeve maker Stever Averill that is a non-U2, "Passengers part II" project. Rubin hasn't been heard of re: U2 album since the Fall of 2006 and recording of the two U218 songs, but it hasn't been officially declared he is out of the picture either - I think the December 2006 issue of Q has Edge saying that it "looks like Rubin is producing our album".

I think Ali said that, except I don't think she mentioned Rubin.

That has never been officially confirmed...right...

I mean as far as I'm concerned, everything I've heard recently in the press, regarding Lanois and Eno, is that they are working on a new "U2" album....not a Passengers album.

I seriously doubt we'll get another Passengers album...

Yeah, I think we'll get one official studio album.

No side projects.

Bono said recently they had two albums worth of material.
He didn't say they had two projects going on, sounds more like similar things they've said about the writing process. My guess is only one album, with all the best bits thrown in there.

I'd rather it be that way, personally.

No one in the band or U2's organisation said "Eno and Lanois are producing LP 12".

The press may be saying they're working on a U2 album, because they produced them often, but I will take Steve Averill's word for it until the "non U2 Morocco album with Eno and Lanois co-writing" theory gets debunked. Even Bono's last statement says "two albums" and that can still fit in with the "Passengers part II" album.

Anyway, one album, two albums/double album...I wish they'd hurry it up and say exactly what's coming and who's producing for sure.

I think that's not entirely true, actually.
No one has officially confirmed to the public who is producing LP12. (Is that is what you meant with your post?)

Lanois recently said something that might suggest that he and Brian are going to be in charge of producing the next U2 album.

Quote:
Dropping into third person, he [Lanois] stages a version of a speech he gives to U2 when he joins them to make a new record — he has produced four so far, a fifth is on the way. This is when Lanois aims to rattle the boys’ cages, awaken their creative spirits. He did it to kick off the most recent U2 recording sessions he directed along with longtime colleague Brian Eno.

“Lanois comes in the room and he says, thank you for the invitation. First thing I’d like to do is tell Richard and Chris, our young engineers, that Lanois has officially been invited to produce this record with Eno. Now, I’ve been in and out of the room, there’s been some jam sessions, a lot has gone by and I haven’t said too much. As of this very second I am producing the record with the big brain Eno. New regime. Quite simply we operate by some fundamental expectations. We are going to the TOP. With QUALITY.

Not a single moment will be let go that relates to performance that should not be registered in our system ... And you know what? Twenty-five years I’ve been lookin’ at your Irish asses, and you know something? Larry hasn’t
changed, he’s more handsome than ever. This one over here might be a little fatter, this one a little greyer. And maybe you got” — sneering tone — “hotels, maybe got a couple of boats.

But remember one thing: we did some of our best work when we had sawdust in our teeth. And the sawdust has not gone away — because you are lookin’ at sawdust! The kind of sawdust that will come to your house and get smeared in your eyes if you don’t deliver the goods.

So we are going to maximize the situation here. I will not leave a stone unturned. And thank you very much for inviting me back in.”

Perhaps "Lanois has officially been invited to produce this record with Eno." is only a expression though, I don't know.

What's the difference ?

Thanks for the link, and that indeed sounds a bit more official. So Eno and Lanois officially moved on from co-writing to producing. I'm still curious about the "two albums" talk we heard from Steve Averill, Edge and Bono. I guess this buries Rubin now ?

On second thought, was that the "I give this speech when/if I produce U2 in general" or is that "I give this speech AND I'm producing U2 this time" talk ?

None. I just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same thing and apparently we did.

the wikipedia thing on Rick Rubin no longer has U2 up as one of his upcoming albums. But, just as someone said earlier, anyone can edit wiki. just a thought.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to think that Eno and Lanois wouldn't produce the tracks they have co-written.

Personally, I think it's all but certain they will at the very least co-produce the record.

Rubin likes to work with songs that have already been written, so he certainly could spend a few months withe band after they've written all the songs, regardless of how many projects he has. Metallica has been writing that album for almost two years, off and on and I'm not sure Rubin has spent more than a few weeks with them. He's supposedly waiting until they are ready to record.

If Rick Rubin produces the new U2 album ... it won't be new at all
