hello everyone,

this requires some explaining.
my point is made clear by the end of this post.
thank you in advance for your patience!

for awhile now,
i've found myself turning a simple gift to a longtime friend into an elaborate project.
it's for an old friend who has shared my love of U2 since The Joshua Tree was released,
and shared the sensory obliterating bliss that is being 12th row for U2 in Kansas City in October 1992.
we dig into the lyrics,
the melodies,
the story of the group,
and it never grows old.

that friend of mine got back from a third military tour overseas as an air force fireman recently.
i had usually been broke and fighting debt during his time away.
as a result,
i never properly acknowledged his absence with a care package of any kind,
despite wanting to do something a bit unusual and maybe even grand to express my appreciation of him as a friend and a person in the service.
originally,
i started with something great enough.
i bought him a copy of Bill Flanagan's U2 At The End Of The World and even got it autographed by Bill himself!

this could have been the end of it.
however,
i couldn't leave it at that....
or,
the gift wouldn't leave me alone!
i started to realize that i wanted the book to have a musical accompaniment,
visual accompaniment that improves upon the photos included in the book
(i like the subjects of the photos in it,
but the photos are like photocopies of newspaper clippings.
they don't do the book justice.),
and maybe more.
just not sure what initially.

as i've considered what to do,
i realized i wanted one accompanying CD called Hansas Heroes.
it will be a highlight reel version of those leaked Hansa studio recordings.
something to really put you into the picture that Flanagan so expertly communicates already.
i've got some ideas for sleeve artwork,
and i'd like to put liner notes in it that help tell the story of how U2 dreamed it all up again.
in addition,
i always liked the Uncut magazine tribute,
in CD form,
to The Joshua Tree.
it was called,
i think,
The Songs That Inspired The Joshua Tree.
i felt Achtung Baby needed an equivalent.
i gathered tunes for a nice single disc worth of musical signposts on the way to Achtung Baby and Zoo TV.
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised by Gil Scott Heron,
Heroes by David Bowie,
This Is Radio Clash by The Clash,
Springtime For Hitler from The Producers,
and even some Joshua Trio tracks.
Lou Reed is in there too,
along with Elvis,
ABBA,
Public Enemy,
and Roxy Music,
to name a few.

at some point,
i hope to make my own special tribute to Zoo TV using various bits of the audio madness swirling around them at the time,
as well as those wonderful songs,
but using the studio versions of the songs and some of the remix bits that i think have aged well.
that will take music programs such Audacity,
Logic,
perhaps CD Architect,
Soundforge,
and perhaps Ableton Live,
to give this glorified playlist the sort of shivers-up-the-spine qualities i've wanted to create with it.
the as-yet unrealized mix is one i call
Zoorophonic:
Welcome To Nighttown
Everything You Know Is Wrong
i hold out hope that one day U2 will release The Wanderer as Bono sings it,
In Cold Blood,
early versions of Wake Up Dead Man and If God Will Send His Angels,
and any outtakes i could manipulate to make this endeavor complete.
fingers crossed.
the 20th anniversary of Achtung Baby isn't too far off....

so,
to make a long story longer,
i have made what i refer to as postcard bookmarks for each of the sixty chapters in U2 At The End Of The World,
all on index card stock.
each will have various text sayings from live performances of The Fly on the backs of them,
with the proper font used on the vidiwalls during each rendition of the song.
Death Is A Career Move
Religion Is A Club
Guilt Is Not Of God
and so on.

as i continue,
i realize i want to further shrine up this gift with any badges,
patches,
pins,
and other stocking stuffers that the good people of the U2 community might be interested in selling.
along with old copies of Propoganda from the Zoo period,
and perhaps and inflatable Trabant
(are there any still around?),
i think my work will,
at last,
be done.

anyone who has dared bother with reading all of this has already been very kind to me.
i would like to give you a round of applause.
:applaud:
if you happen to want to contribute ideas,
have any of the aforementioned items i seek for sale,
or simply feel that i've left something out of the gesture,
then by all means please let me know.

this isn't really as much like work as it appears.
i'm having a blast revisiting,
making this grand audiovisual scrapbook of sorts,
and hopefully,
honoring my friend whom i've been so blessed to know.

thank you all for your time, consideration, and efforts on my behalf.
take care and be well.
Jason
