U2 on Japan Aid Album

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Could be a live song from a tour stop in Japan. Would be great if it was Mercy, should find out soon, maybe tomorrow.

Why do artists believe that less-than-mediocre music is the best way to cheer up the world after a tragedy?

Remember "What's Goin On?" after 9/11? It was like another act of terrorism! I would've waterboarded them for that crap.

Come on, seriously??

Yes seriously. For me it just would be one step too far. It would prove that Bono's arse-kissing quality-control had gone into serious haywire if he were to artistically collaborate with Justin fucking Bieber. You can't possibly tell me you would be happy to see that??

There are a few things that I hope U2 never do because it would seriously tarnish them in my eyes. Like playing a residency at a Vegas casino (urgh!). Playing private shows for weddings/birthdays of billionaires for some quick $$$ (christ no!). Or having a guest vocalist like Bieber on their songs. Beyonce on American Prayer was about all I could handle (at least it wasn't Britney or Christina).

Christina sang on the What's Going On that Bono was involved in.

So you'd better get your rage on.

I like the implicit assumption that there's no way in hell U2 could write a new song given a whole week. Probably true/for the best, but still: this band works slooooooooowly.

Isn't it funny how U2 can mash together covers/collaborations in a matter of hours when it wants to (What's Going On, Father Christmas, Stranded, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Instant Karma, Saints Are Coming, New York New York etc) but really struggles to finish their own songs in less than 4 years!

it could just as easily be something rare:

Stand By Me - U2 feat Yvonne Chaka Chaka
Mercy (Live)
Winter (Brothers Version)
Winter (Linera Version)
Soon
Gimme Shelter (Live from NY) - U2 with Mick Jagger and Fergie
Smile
Flower Child
Angels Too Tied to the Ground

or something less over-used than Walk One & One:

Saints are Coming - U2/Green Day
Window in the Skies
Kite (Live from Sydney, November 2006)
Yahweh

Well, there are problems with quite a few of those.
As many have pointed out, Mercy's "you want to kill me" chorus isn't very suitable.
Winter isn't a very uplifting song.
Smile isn't very well known.
etc...

My thinking is that they'll want a song that is very well known - to entice casual or non-fans to buy it (they'd obviously buy an album with one on it over one with Yahweh) - and that is very upbeat.
This album really isn't going to be about treating hardcore u2/bieber/rhianna fans who want some b-sides, it's just about raising money very quickly. A song being over-used isn't really a bad thing in this case, in fact it probably actually helps its chances of being on this. It's probably just gonna be a greatest hits album.

I still think the idea of a new song on this comp album could be possible. But maybe this new song will probably be just a cover. Didn't they release the saints are coming for a Katrina benefit?

It most likely will be something old, but could very easily be something new. New album or not. Even if you assume there's no new album till 2013, and ignore the existence of the DM material, there's still a chance it could be something new given a few points about where U2's heads are at these days. Something like North Star. Thats been knocking around since Atomic Bomb. There would surely be very serviceable studio versions of it out there, possibly a very complete one from the No Line sessions. It would only take Lillywhite a couple of days to give something like that the required spit'n'shine. If its not on the radar for any future album, like the Mercy WAIE release, they might see this as an opportunity presenting itself for letting something like that have its day.

Having said that, I bet it is just something old and one of the usual suspects.

Walk on is probably the most fitting song in their catalog for this.

I mean, isn't it just as fitting as something like Beautiful Day? They don't have a ton of stuff to choose from in this regard I don't think, but I'm not really all keen with song meanings.

When I say it's a lame choice I just think the song is just eh, and they think it's the cat's pajamas. Just my opinion, of course. Also, they're just essentially taking the song and slapping it on the album. Would've been interesting to see some form of alternate, a mix, or a collab version. I know they're obviously busy right now though.

It's probably more of the media's fault that people are reacting the way they are right now though. When you say that U2 is going to appear on such an album you leave open-ended speculation. Should've made it more clear that they're just essentially making a playlist and selling it.

Hey, at least it's not One! I thought for sure that would be it, but I should have figured this one would be right up there, too.

10 dollars for 38 songs though is an amazing deal. I wonder why they would only release a charity album on one source though. Unless it goes to other download sites like amazon later like sometimes happens. There are lots of people who don't normally download music that would be much more likely to use Amazon since it's easy.
