oh hey, we attacked Assad forces in Syria. I'm sure it's unrelated.
That's really the big issue with his presidency.
The attack apparently happened in connection with a threat to US-backed rebel groups in Southern Syria that, as a condition for the support, are expressly fighting IS. A mix of Syrian army forces and Hezbollah, as well as apparently members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, were about to attack positions of these rebels in order to consolidate areas.
It was reasonable for the US to step in and make clear that it will protect what it considers allies (speaking here in terms of, US Central Command must make a decision that is in line with official policy. The nature of the support, just as the nature of the entire Syrian conflict, is a different story that fills books), but given the situation that the US are in with the current President, every step, even if its coherent by itself, will inevitably called into question and it's impossible to deny there's good reason to.
Trust in the administration's actions has been completely eroded.
That is an absolutely shocking cover. Fell at the first hurdle by implying Saint Basil's Cathedral is the equivalent of the fucking White House.
The cover must be self-explanatory and its intention be grasped immediately in order to be most effective, so in that light it's legitimate to use what every modestly educated person connects with the seat of the Russian president without thinking. And that is definitely the basilica.
