I like this one. Like a lot of debuts by very young bands, it sounds a lot like a lot of other groups of the day -- yet it still sounds very "U2", in retrospect. My only complaint about it is that it is kind of one-note. There's pretty much zero diversity, and every song sounds about the same. But those songs were very good...

Such a fantastic debut When I became a fan in early 2001, I made it a point to get all of the band's biggest material as quick as possible (keep in mind, I was fairly young and not very computer savvy, so no "napster" at my disposal ). "Boy" was one of my last acquisitions, a purchase made not particularly out of necessity, but merely for the completest in me that I had become. Needless to say, after my first listen, I was pleasantly surprised and completely enamored

Fine debut. Just hinted at the great stuff to come from the guys, but a strong introduction nonetheless.

2. I Will Follow (Just plain awesome song. This was one of the first songs I checked out when I was starting to discover the band's music further, always loved this one)

I think this album is a masterpiece, or as close to one as a band as inexperienced as U2 could have created. Intelligent while viscerally intense, immediate while ambitious: it's the perfect debut for a band like U2. I got this album for Christmas 2002 (I'll expound further on that when the TUF round comes around), and I associate this album with icy landscapes, as well as growing up in general. This album came into my life at the right time, and it only sounds better after all these years.

It took me a while to appreciate Boy, but now it's one of my favourites and I think it really captures that special feeling of innocence and youth. It surely must be one of the finest debuts made by a very young band.

i fucking love this album. one of the very few U2 albums that, once it has finished playing through for the first time, the words "what a fucking great album" dropped out of my mouth. just stunning that a band that only four years earlier couldn't even play instruments put out an album this good. better than October and War, definitely. i think it still sounds quite fresh too, that's probably moreso a testament to the raw energy and enthusiasm of the album though. Edge, Adam and Larry all fantastic and outshine Bono.

1. The Electric Co - blew my mind the first time i heard it. and 30 years on that guitar still sounds exciting, even if Bono was singing in his own language. 10
2. An Cat Dubh - this is one of the songs on the album that i think points to the fact the band were going to go far. great dark vibe to it. 10
3. Out of Control - also hints to a great career, and contains some pretty great lyrics for a bloke who was freshly 18. the only problem i have with it is in terms of sequencing; it follows An Cat Dubh and Into the Heart, and has the same bass line, so once this track starts it feels, "ughh again?" 9
4. I Will Follow - the lyric may be "walk away walk away" but that's not what Bono sings. guitar still sounds blistering. 9
5. Shadows and Tall Trees - The Electric Co would be a great closer, but i love how this flows so seamlessly out of it and calms you right back down. i know it's generally hated but to you all. 9
6. A Day Without Me - another ridiculously exciting guitar riff. 8
7. Twilight 7

11. The Ocean - love the mood and the lyrics too, even if it's just a glorified intro/outro 6

Great debut. Definitly better than October and War. They really showed their talent with this record.
1. Another Time Another Place: Great guitar solo.
2. Twilight: I don't know why but I always loved this song.

3. The Ocean: It doesn't have much to it but I think it's a brilliant rest spot for the album.
4. Out Of Control: Just a great energetic song.
5. I Will Follow: Just a great energetic song and one of Edge's most memorable riffs.
6. Stories For Boys: Just a fun song.
7. An Cat Dubh: Shows the atmospheric side of their music.
8. A Day Without Me: Weird choice for a first single but a great song nonetheless.
9. Electric Co.: I like this song but not as much as most people

10. Into The Heart: Boring
11. Shadows And Tall Trees: I actually hate this song.
