Why do people put 'No Gifts' on birthday party/wedding/whatever invitations? They're still expecting you to bring a gift. They tell you not to but they'll still be offended or insulted if you don't. It is BS.

The couple was leaving to do missions in a third world country for an indefinite period of time and honestly didn't need any appliances or housewares. Instead, they gave an account for their favorite non-profit so you could donate there instead of buying a gift.

Bono's American Wife said:If I receive a no gifts invitation, I don't bring a gift...period. I might bring a card or a bottle of wine but that's it. If the person who did the inviting gets pissed, too bad. Don't say no gifts unless you mean no gifts.
Likewise, if I extend a no gifts invitation, I HONESTLY don't expect gifts. I get a little miffed when people ignore my request and bring them anyway. It makes the people who actually listened and didn't bring one feel like asses, just like in the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode April mentioned

For Honor said:HMm.......... maybe I'll find someone who says " no gifts" for their wedding, and then wait outside...
when guests with gifts come, I'll just take it out of their hands, saying I was a hired "gift negator". My payment will be the gifts, of course.
Of course........... having a bunch of toasters as my loot might not be as flattering as I perceive.......
Mrs. Edge said:OMG, I hate the no gifts thing. My friend had a birthday party, I can't remember if it was for her, or for her 1 year old, (it was a few years ago) but the invitation clearly stated no gifts. So...I didn't bring one, and I was the ONLY one. I was so embarassed, and so humiliated at having been put in that position!

I was invited to a bridal shower earlier this year and on the bottom of the invitation it said:
"Please note, this is a cash only shower."
