Oof.

Well, just think of all the music you'll be able to listen to as you drive (or ride?) back and forth!

Yeah, will all that internship money I'll be rolling in, I can affix my car with aux hole

Is there a difference between "ride" and "drive"?

"Drive" suggests that you are the one driving, while "ride" insinuates that you are being driven somewhere by someone else.

Yup, I wasn't sure if he'd be driving, or riding a train or other public transport method.

Edit: Ah, driving. Do you have a CD player at least? Jebus help you if all you have is the radio. Or pick up some cheap little portable speaker for your iPod, I guess. I did that for a while before I replaced my car stereo. It was better than silence.

I have a CD player, but with those nifty iPod adapters (that sound like crap, admittedly), I'd almost rather have a cassette player these days.

Ashley's picking up a new car in the next week or so, maybe we'll get lucky and find one with an iPod hookup.

Yeah, good luck! Hope it has something that makes the whole commuter hell thing less commuter hellish for you.

Thanks. Hard to be bummed about it when I actually have a job to go to and can be all like "hey, guys, I'm picking up a second car!" Beats the hell out of where I was a couple years ago.

We see you rollin', we hatin' .

I really don't want to work this afternoon. Can you tell? I think if I sit here long enough, this FAQ about some benefits stuff will edit itself.

Haha, thanks for the info.

I appeciate that, Martha. Though I am a Texas hater in general, I grew up only ten miles from the border of West Texas and dearly miss the wide open spaces, tiny towns, starry skies, and storms.

Texas is a living hell to drive through, but Indiana might actually be worse, especially heading east.

Far and away the worst drive I have ever had is Illinois from tip to tip. It takes upwards of nine hours, and there is little else to look at but abandoned gas stations and pro-NRA yard signs.

I just remember a lot of cows. So many cows in those giant pens that they turned into a giant, brownish blur. We kept the windows up for most of the drive.

We got stuck for some construction at some point, not far from the OK border, and while it was hot, I did kind of enjoy standing on the side of the road, just looking out over the vast flatness and feeling that kind of heat, which I sometimes actually miss here in WA.

Now, Montana! There's a place I'll happily drive for the wide open spaces. It just felt so huge and open ... when I was moving here from Wisconsin, we stopped near Missoula for the night, and as we walked around, it was like I totally got the whole "Big Sky Country" thing. Gorgeous. Just loved it. (Although the eastern half of the state isn't quite as nifty as the western half.)

Dang, I really want to take a good road trip again. Hopefully next summer when I have a new (well, new to me) car, I can do that - take a week and just go. My car makes just enough noise right now on normal drives that it makes me nervous enough not to want to take it anywhere really far.

(and my car place did tell me something major in regards to the steering looks like it's near its last legs, so I just want it to last me until late fall now.)

Looks like NSW will have some company in the douchebag section on the next Shuttlecock tour.

Montana is beautiful, wish I had time go to further north than where I went for a wedding a couple years ago (Bozeman), really would like to check out Glacier National Park.

I saw much more of Wyoming, which is absolutely beautiful, not even including Yellowstone. Probably my second favorite state after California.

Oh yeah, I did that once, driving back from Texas. I think if U2 had experienced that, we never would have gotten the Joshua Tree.

Wyoming kicks ass. I couldn't breathe right for a couple of hours, but it was worth it.

Are the Violent Femmes worth hearing? Maybe I should add the disclaimer that I really loathe Blister in the Sun (probably owing to overexposure more than anything else), but I have heard this band referenced so many times as a touchstone of the early alternative movement that I figure I ought to give them more of a chance.

Montana and Wyoming are pretty fucking spectacular. I love those flat states, too though. Hell, I'll drive anywhere. I really think the reason why Hawaii is my last state is because there's no highway to it.

Speaking of all this, my annual road trip is in July.
If any of you clowns would like a postcard, and I don't already have your address, PM it on over and I'll add you to the list.

Blister In The Sun is their best song (I say this after hearing the debut several times and nothing else; take that FWIW), so...ah, what the hell, I suppose you owe it to yourself to hear the debut once. It's pretty good. I don't think there are many fans on Interference.

With the Violent Femmes, I'd say their hits are hits for a reason. The rest of their catalog really doesn't do much for me.

Ahh. Doubt I'll ever make it myself. When I fly to an island paradise type place I'll save up more money and go to Tahiti.

Probably won't ever hit Alaska either.

The ST is a classic. Kiss Off and Add It Up, along with Blister, are the best on there.
Yep, definitely a landmark album. Sort of wished I listened to it more in high school/college, as it's a perfect soundtrack for The Angst Years.

Pretty sure the rest of their discography is completely inessential.

Glacier National Park ... not even including Yellowstone.

Glacier is pretty close to the top of my list. Would like to go back to Yellowstone as well. That road trip I talked about went west across Wyoming (which I loved ), and then through both the Grand Teton and Yellowstone parks. Just great, wish we hadn't just been driving through.

Do you like American music????

That's the only VF song not on their debut that I can name.

I worked at a crappy record store in the crappy mall in my hometown after college, and this woman came in one day and claimed to be Gordon Gano's mother. I had no reason not to believe her, and I suppose even though they're from Milwaukee and not the central part of the state, it was seriously random.
