Interference Random Music Talk: Rick Rubin produces the XX

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
i want to start a thread or just an argument somewhere in EYKIW about how hip hop is fucking awesome.

readily rapping and snapping, snapping and trapping, that's just what's happening

I hate Rick Rubin so much the last few years, and I'm not sure why (though I'm sure if I looked through his discography of production over the last 10 years, I'd remember immediately, as he's responsible for so much horse shit it's ridiculous). Knowing he's producing The XX pretty much means I'm going somehow subconsciously stop liking them, which sucks.

i can't seem to find mofo's post containing the rick rubin hatred to see if there's more than shoes (cobblers make shoes, get it? ok i know i'm not funny) quoted, but i think he's been responsible for all that rhcp sameness that's happened in the past several years (either that or a lack of heroin on anthony keidis' and frusciante's parts). that alone is really enough in my book, even without pulling up 10 yrs worth of discography.

Ehhhh, Jay-Z always strikes me as nothing more than mediocre. Same old stories, not told as vividly as others, though his flow is great, for the most part.

Blasphemy, I know.

His albums are crap for the most part. Reasonable Doubt and Blueprint are unstoppable though, and he isn't without his classic singles. I love him, but definitely a bit too inconsistent for me to really consider a favorite artist.

This.

I really like him. I think The Blueprint was one of the best albums of the 2000s, but he's not somebody that I find myself listening to all that much.

If I need me a hip hop fix, my big go-to guys are still Pac, Tribe, the Pharcyde and, of course, THE WU!

And if you play me something off of either of the Chronics, or one of the first two Eminem albums, I will get all nostalgiac and I will attempt to rap all of the words in embarrassing white boy fashion.

It's one thing to say that most of his albums are inconsistent, and I'm not going to argue that point. But to call him mediocre just reeks of some kind of hipster, I-listen-to-so-much-hip-hop-and-can't-possibly-endorse-some-megastar-entrepreneur pose.

Yawn.

Has anyone listened to Play It Strange by The Fresh & Onlys? I discovered them through a pitchfork review where they were streaming a song. And so I got the album. It reminds me of some sort of a hybrid of The Morning Benders, Surfer Blood, and something else that I can't quite think of at the moment. I enjoy it greatly, though.

As for rap, the only two artists I listen to with any sort of regularity are Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Good record, good band. Keeping the SF dream alive. I prefer their self-titled debut, though. Mostly because of "Peacock and Wing."

Turn it up to make it better. One of my favorite songs of the last several years. If you dig these turkeys, then you may also dig Thee Oh Sees, Art Museums, Moonhearts (formerly Charlie & the Moonhearts), and Ty Segall. Amongst others, of course.

Um, no. But, considering he's one of the most revered MCs in the game, it is somewhat of an unpopular stance to say that he's not as good as a lot of other rappers.

Anyway, don't try to attack me on the not liking huge stars, because that's not my issue with Jay-Z. Put on "Big Pimpin'," "Girls, Girls, Girls," or "Dirt Off Your Shoulder," and you'll find me reciting the lyrics and fucking loving it. I love Eminem. I love Tupac; he's my absolute favorite rapper. If those aren't "megastars," I don't know what would be considered so.

And, my question to you is: in your mind, how does a white female listen to hip-hop and genuinely love it without being called a pretentious hipster? Because, that, as far as I can tell, is your real issue here. Never mind the fact that I actually DO listen to a lot of hip-hop by choice, simply because it was the first genre I fell in love with as a 10, 11, 12 year old, and it continues to be a sonic home for me—comforting, even. I'd actually love an answer to that question, by the way...it's not rhetorical.

Worth pointing out that we're posting on a U2 board, as well. Nobody here has problems with megastars, or whatever you want to call 'em. Possibly the dumbest faux criticism imaginable, given the context.

I think you need to record yourself rapping.

Fair point that you're into other big rappers. And to think he's overrated and not among the top MCs is certainly a legitimate claim to make. But calling the guy mediocre? Come on. You said yourself he has great flow, and as a fan of Eminem I would think you'd respect his gift for wordplay as well. Plus you say nothing about his work as a producer.

I'm not calling you a pretentious hipster because you're a white girl listening to hip hop, and I didn't bring your race or gender into it. I'm not begrudging or even questioning your true love for the genre. I just think to shrug off a guy who as you said is so revered comes off a little...

The context? You mean in this area of the forum where many people don't even seem to like or listen to Shuttlecock anymore? Ok.

It's like being a kid at your friends' house and the dad just punched the mom at the dinner table!

So the new Of Montreal album...way better than I expected. But did they kidnap the lead singer of Hockey?

i haven't listened to them since aldhils arboretum. damn, it's been a while.

Hahaha, yeah. Maybe someday.

I still don't understand how "mediocre" is that much different from "overrated." Other than his flow, I don't enjoy anything about him. Mafioso rap doesn't do it for me, period. If I'm listening to anything in the vein of gangsta rap, it's West Coast and always has been. I enjoy the in-your-face, no regrets attitude of that rather than the cool, collected East Coast rappers (Jay-Z, Biggie, Mobb Deep, etc.)

Speaking of Eminem vs. Jay-Z, this song says it all. Eminem fucks Jay up on his own track: YouTube - Jay Z - Renegade ft. Eminem

hip hop/rap does nothing for me. i dislike 99% of what i've heard. i've tried, albeit not as hard as other genres, to get into certain things but i cannot. run dmc is fun, and i do have some nwa on the ipod (but probably more for the comedy value i guess). i really enjoy saul williams. some outkast is good, although i don't like much of their stuff. i still maintain that if i find something i do like, regardless of whether it's a genre i generally don't care for, i'm going to buy the album and enjoy what i don't hate if it's rap, country, rock n roll, or techno. but there's been very little hip hop i've been exposed to that hasn't made my ears feel like they'll start bleeding if it doesn't go away asap.

i hate tupac and i wish he was still alive, since he's put out so many albums dead i'm sure he wouldn't have as much crap out there had not been shot.

There are a handful of hip hop / rap songs that I really like, but it's usually a great single that catches my attention. When I try to delve deeper into an artist's work, like Jay-Z or Cee-Lo's rap work, it doesn't do much for me. I do like to give something a try when someone says "Hey, if you like that, you should try this" and appreciate those suggestions. I like to keep trying, as my tastes do evolve occasionally.

I have Kanye's albums, and like most everything on them (love almost all of his singles), but he seems to be the exception.
