As time goes on, I'm more and more convinced that NLOTH (the song) would have done the trick.

I think NLOTH2 combined with Earnie Shavers' idea on MOS would have done the trick.

Or even a properly promoted Magnificent or Breathe.

2 things went very wrong. First, the choice of Boots, and second, their lack of any promotion at all for the single.

I think Magnificent has alot more in common with the truly inspiring U2 anthems of the 1980s than it does with U2 autopilot 00's sound. It is U2 by numbers in alot better way than Miracle Drug or New York.

Boots is a fun song but it was a terrible decision for a lead single. Its a more layered song than Vertigo but the general listener just thinks of it as a Vertigo 2.0. Riff/Melody with loud guitar. It was a terrible representation of how great NLOTH really is.

If they wanted Boots as a single it should have been the 2nd or 3rd just to get people excited for the 360 show. If U2 would have chosen Breathe, MOS, or NLOTH (ORIGINAL) the band would have gotten some attention thrown their way.

Can you imagine U2 playing Breathe at the Grammy's last year instead of GOYB?!!?!?

Whatever U2 puts out I always enjoy and love anyways, whether it be ambient more rare style songs or radio friendly pop hits.Though I would love to hear more NLOTH,Numb,Discotheque,Zooropa kind of songs more so than the All Because of You,BD,Vertigo, ect. At least for now or a couple of albums.Sometimes I get the feeling that U2 gets too cautious about there music.I'ts like they have an album almost ready and then go back to the drawing board and release it about a year later. However there could be some good to that too I guess.Oh well stay tuned.:hmm:

I mostly agree. I like Boots a lot, but it was a terrible first single choice. I still think Magnificent could have really taken off, but MOS or NLOTH might have been great choices also.

yeppers. i'm a huge fan of Boots (the song) but not as the first single.

Yeah you've convinced me just what a mistake it was. Breathe would have been a perfect lead single.

It probably depends of the Spiderman musical. It is a blockbuster, it would be logic to keep a low profile until it begins, then promote it heavily and maybe improve it. It's not a cheap project and a lot of critics and spidey fans are waiting to demolish this musical.

Yeah, but it's a muscial, and it won't have a U2 recorded soundtrack, so I don't think it's gonna really do anything for them either way...

Delighted to see that you've counted Passengers, I do as well, not sure many others do though.
The one I don't count as a studio album is Rattle & Hum. And too bad it isn't just a studio album, 'cause most of those tracks are bangin'...and I hardly ever listen to the live cuts. In fact, just listen to the studio portion by itself in the same order and you'll see what I mean...

So, with the upcoming newest album, the count will be 13.

Boy/October/War/TUF/TJT/Achtung Baby/Zooropa/OS1/Pop/ATYCLB/HTDAAB/NLOTH/SOA(?)

Definitely.

At the Norman concert, it was the only new song that got the entire crowd rocking, even in the nosebleed seats.

And search Youtube. See how many garage bands are doing cover versions.

Even without being a single, NLOTH has become the most recognizable and popular song off the album.

They've never hidden that their goal is to reach as many people as possible. Ever. It is about public perception to them, and it always makes me laugh when people think they're going to change this late in the game.

It's not bad too reach as many people as possible. But they should do it with music they really stand behind creatively. They compromise too much.
I know it is about public perception to them. I just wished that would change. And I am sure that for NLOTH it was less about public perception than ATYCLB for example.

Huh. I didn't know that, but it doesn't surprise me. It sounds like u2 being modern and fresh, and I think it would have gone over huge on modern rock and alternative rock stations, and possibly gained them some cred with the indie kids.

nloth2 sucks ass compared to nloth

this.

So assuming SOA comes out after the announced tour, do y'all think there's any chance they'd tour again soon after it's release? Would they release an album and not tour it? Or do you think there's a better chance of them touring with it the longer it takes for them to release it?

It doesn't make an ounce of sense to put out the album this year if they can't get it out before the tour resumes.

The only choices, IMO, are that they finish it and put it out around the resumption of the tour (maybe even extend the tour if it does well) or that they hold on to it and work on it for the next year or so after the tour ends.

Album in June of 2010 or 2012.
