As time goes on, I'm more and more convinced that NLOTH (the song) would have done the trick.

Delighted to see that you've counted Passengers, I do as well, not sure many others do though.

Boots is a fun song but it was a terrible decision for a lead single. Its a more layered song than Vertigo but the general listener just thinks of it as a Vertigo 2.0. Riff/Melody with loud guitar. It was a terrible representation of how great NLOTH really is.
If they wanted Boots as a single it should have been the 2nd or 3rd just to get people excited for the 360 show. If U2 would have chosen Breathe, MOS, or NLOTH (ORIGINAL) the band would have gotten some attention thrown their way.
Can you imagine U2 playing Breathe at the Grammy's last year instead of GOYB?!!?!?
I mostly agree. I like Boots a lot, but it was a terrible first single choice. I still think Magnificent could have really taken off, but MOS or NLOTH might have been great choices also.

It probably depends of the Spiderman musical. It is a blockbuster, it would be logic to keep a low profile until it begins, then promote it heavily and maybe improve it. It's not a cheap project and a lot of critics and spidey fans are waiting to demolish this musical.
The one I don't count as a studio album is Rattle & Hum. And too bad it isn't just a studio album, 'cause most of those tracks are bangin'...and I hardly ever listen to the live cuts. In fact, just listen to the studio portion by itself in the same order and you'll see what I mean...Delighted to see that you've counted Passengers, I do as well, not sure many others do though.
Let's put it this way: If U2 and Brian Eno release a 15 track album this year, I don't care what they call it!!!!!

Even without being a single, NLOTH has become the most recognizable and popular song off the album.
They've never hidden that their goal is to reach as many people as possible. Ever. It is about public perception to them, and it always makes me laugh when people think they're going to change this late in the game.
And search Youtube. See how many garage bands are doing cover versions.
