Magnificent Appreciation Thread

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Eno and the rhythm section get the thumbs up for this one. I think if you took it's basic Bono/Edge parts (the lyrics, the melody, Edge's guitar part) and imagine it shot back through the HTDAAB Machine you can see it easily being a dull, clunky, noisy disaster similar to ABOY. But given the dancy rhythm, and Eno's stellar lush arrangement and production - the synths, the Lemonesque shimmer and the way they interplay - and yeah, it's pretty great. I'm certainly not bored of it, and the simplistic end of the U2 00s pop-rock singles have otherwise easily been the fastest to pass me by.

A well-meaning but knob-head bloke tried to start a fight with me in the GA during magnificent at Wembley, so it kinda took the Edge off of it for me, which was a bit of a shame. :(

 How do you try to start a fight and still be well-meaning?

That's too bad. :(

Not sure, he either thought I was trying to barge through, even though I'd stood in the same spot since the gates opened,

Or he was trying to stop me putting my arms round this woman in the crowd -I was - she's my girlfriend.

All a bit bizarre, he apologised afterwards though and said he misunderstood, but by then the moment was lost.

What made it worse that just ahead of us there were three other blokes who started on at least four or five other people during the show. It was so un-necessary - when you've paid out all that money for a ticket, why go and spoil it.

While I love the rest of the production, its undeniable the hooks of the song are Edge's riff and Bono's melody, they are undeniably U2 but anything but been-there-done that, so exhilarating! But combine that with what you're talking about and you have the amazing song we all love, and the idiotic pop music world ignored.

AH ok I see now, they thought they were helping  Too bad you missed the song. I know I've had similar experiences too that make you wonder why some people bother to go to a show at all.

what a bummer - wish we all had a little 'I dream of Jeannie' style blinker to get rid of pesky punters like that

*comes back to appreciate some more*

a thousand times this . . . . the opening on the album version is just too amazing for words . . . the goosebumple meter goes into overdrive every single time . . . adore this song to bits and pieces

indeed . . . makes you wonder if people like this are really interested in seeing the band or just interested in ticking off a box on a magic list somewhere (ie: seen U2 live, tick . . . ) piss off and give the rest of us a chance buddy :D

I still think they only scratched the surface of potential for this song. Its good but I think it could have been so much more.

:applaud: I fully agree. The Lillywhite "primary colours" approach would have undersold the song. It makes you wonder how good HTDAAB could have been without his clunking fist.

New edition of Niall Stokes Book - Stories behind every U2 song

I've only read the first couple of entries for NLOTH songs so far. Will post any other interesting facts as I read it (just got it in the post today!). He states that Magnificent was originally called "French Disco"! Maybe I missed that one in an earlier thread on possible song titles, but I wasn't aware of that one.

those are my thoughts too, though as i predicted, this would be the song that was a little ruined by the beach clip. i had a picture in my head that this song would be a lot more subtle and ambient. while i knew it would have thumping bass, i was hoping for more of a WOWY sound than disco. i still really like the song though.......and the intro leading into the guitar =

It has to be the most infectious riff of the decade, how can you not feel awesome when it takes off? That's how I've felt since the 30 second previews came out!!

The beach clip definitely ruined it for me. I was hearing more of a loud sliding guitar throughout the verses like on "Disappearing Act" instead of the barely audible guitar that's in there. Also I was thinking of "A Sort Of Homecoming" and "Streets" drums. I like the sound of the different lyrics/Bono's delivery in the beach clip version.

everybody brings their A-game on this one to my ears..

:larry: Larry's four-on-the-floor driving drums during the verse, and the snare build leading into each chorus create a great dynamic - tension & release! a fresh sound for our man.

:edge: Edge's riff... deceptively simple, provides the song's killer hook. The solo is silky smooth, restrained, tasteful, and emotive.

:bono: thumbs up for Bono throughout. I love how he sings the verse in a lower register instead of belting out the song in its entirety. all melody. Chorus is classic Bono, but he keeps it simple, and leaves room for the band to have their say

:adam: that groove. maybe my favorite "Adam song." I wont say any more, because I can't do him proper justice here.

I just listened to the studio version for the first time in a few months and I still feel this is a seminal U2 song that makes me incredibly emotional when I hear it.

I try and avoid listening to any U2 studio stuff when the tour's on so that it doesn't affect how I feel about the concerts.

There really are no words to describe how incredible this song is. You can analyze it to death but in the end you just feel it. That amazing chill down your spine, the feeling you've been transported somewhere divine for those few minutes you hear it in your headphones.:loveshower:

You know it's funny. I took some online poll recently that said Which song are you most looking forward to hearing live on the 360 Tour, and they listed every song that has been played on the tour so far. My first thought was to put Bad, or any number of other songs I really want to hear, especially since Bad is THE song I have always said I want to hear live. But the more I looked at the list the more I realized that deep down I had to choose Magnificent. It surprised me because I never thought that on a list that long I would choose it, but I did. :)

Is this the appropriate place to post this?

Interesting new vocal melody (editing?) here if I might say so - kind of what the Fish Out of Water remix did to I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight.
Overall, it gives me a sort of 80s-feel but it might just be me.
