Well, on what've your recent searches been focused, and how've you felt about whatever it is you've been hearing? Answer those questions, and you'll have a better sense of where, exactly, you are...and, more importantly, where you think you should go, next.

And, yes--I completely understand your struggle. I have recently tried to tie things down generically (ie, in terms of genre), when going through recordings of the past. This can be limiting, to an extent (and problematic, in an abstract or theoretical or even cultural sense), but as long as you're not too prescriptive or restrictive, I think it can work quite well. I have tried to FULLY explore one/two areas, per year.

Last year, I tried to learn as much about Reggae music as possible--I bought books, downloaded dozens of ancient albums, bought dozens more, and just had a grand old time. From Reggae, my searches took me into the rest of the Caribbean, and I found myself particularly taken with Calypso and steel drum music (as well as lots of proto- and post-Reggae). It was a great year for discoveries, and my model served me well.

This year, as I have been mentioning, I'm trying to put myself in better touch with the garage and psych movements of the late '60s and early '70s. I have also found myself being drawn into regional, "English" folk (Meic Stevens, Fairport Convention, etc.) and lots of newer, under-the-psych-umbrella stuff (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Boris, Beachwood Sparks), as a result. My listening has been more hit-and-miss than last year's weed-a-thon, but it has still been an awesome experience. The internet is such a powerful tool, and allows me to make such better decisions about what to ignore and on what to focus my time, energy, and money.

Make the most of your time, and don't be afraid to hook up with other, more diverse boards. There is a whole wealth of information and experience, out there, just waiting for you to soak it all up!

And, for what it's worth, I couldn't recommend strongly enough the psych stuff about which I've been posting. Holy shit, it's been a while since I've had this much fun with old records (or new records inspired by them!). The first Shadows of Knight LP, Gloria, fucking kills!

My method has been to essentially be a sponge. The recommendations (for the most part) on this forum are phenomenal, so I tend to try to follow most of them pretty well. I have a list of about 100 albums still that have been highly recommended various times that I haven't gotten to (whereas there's about 150 I have gotten to already). It always seems to grow right after I shrink it down a little bit.

It's hard to say I'd have gotten into LC! without your high praise of them, so thank you for that. I'll look into some of your psych recommendations.

Also fucking awesome:

A more natural meeting point between Krautrock and garage than Silver Apples (probably because it was recorded in Germany by an American garage band), this thing is deserving of its "CLASSIC" label. Really wonderful stuff from start to finish, and the band seems to be able to see into the future. Lots of post-punk stuff gets foreshadowed, here, in spite of the freaky organ breakdowns and fuzzy guitars and freakbeat harmonies all rooted so firmly in the '60s. Wonderful. It's not exactly This Heat's Deceit, in that regard, but it's still a bangin' record.

I have nothing of his, so this might not be a bad idea. What should I look into?

This Year's Model and My Aim is True. laz also suggested Imperial Bedroom the other day, though I haven't listened to it myself yet. Armed Forces is another good one too.

Jimothy James' EP of Harrison covers has leaked. Downloading now. It won't be the only thing leaking tonight...

And you would all also recommend Spoon, I assume? They've been on my list for a while now.

Start with Gimme Fiction. Then go anywhere else. I might try to get a ticket for this Thursday's SPOONX3 opener. I think it's the best of the three nights what with Trail of Dead and Black Joe Lewis as the openers.

Shouter, hell of a post at the top of this page.

I've only listened to Gimme Fiction, on the recommendation of a bunch in here, and dug it a lot, so I give them a  Still need to get around to hearing the rest of their catalog though...

Either Boxer or Alligator. Between impy, scumbo, and me, our opinions on the best one vary, but if I had to choose, I'd say to start with Boxer. I don't remember which National song impy used on his DI list, but the one I used was from the Dark Was the Night compilation, so it's not on an album anyway.

One of you kids' DI list got me intrigued re: The National. Can't remember who it was, but one of you - whats the best album to get started with?

Mine kicked off with "Abel," which is from Alligator. Both Alligator and Boxer are awesome albums, I'd start with Alligator.

I used a b side called "Tall Saint."

Starting with Alligator or Boxer is pretty standard. You can't go wrong with either. They're both close to perfect albums from a close to perfect band.

This Michael Jackson memorial is one of the more terribly indulgent things I've ever seen.

I have heard two: Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory. Definitely Maybe was OK, but not all that memorable. I enjoyed Morning Glory. People who feel the same way as me generally don't like the rest of Oasis' stuff. Hence, if I do listen to it, it'll be down the road after I've listened to higher priorities.

The Masterplan b-sides album and Don't Believe the Truth are probably the only two other Oasis albums worth checking out

Heathen Chemistry is so bad it made me stop liking music when I heard it

Surprise of the year!

Yeah, maybe in 60 years if you're wheelchair bound and have a lot of time on your hands.

Too much vital music from the past and present out there to waste precious moments on these flash-in-the-pan, derivative hooligans.

Shuttlecock Update:

Tonight's Milan show appeared to be mostly a copy of opening night's.

Angel of Hardcourt and In A Little Rally come back and replace Perspire (this is an updated SC title I just coined) and Electrical Serve. Party Cock is a holdover from the last show. No Cock Crazy x2 this time; I'm assuming it was just the remix played. Too early to tell, but if the next show doesn't have the album version, it might just be gone for good (we can only hope).

Personally the Shuttle & Bum songs are interchangeable for me; no reason to really get excited about either getting played, although Hardcourt is full band so maybe that's preferable.

Also, apparently they sung Happy Birthday to one of Boner's daughters, who turned 18 today.

GAF, I believe we can now give you this:

Today's my half-birthday, which puts me exactly half a year older than Miss Hewson, here.

I've been thinking. What would be the best and least harmful way of asking Bono's 18 year old daughter out on a date?

Also, for the record, I enjoy Alligator more than Boxer but you can't go wrong. For whoever was asking about that earlier. Rumor has it there are albums by The National that were recorded before those two, but I wouldn't know anything about that.
