WHY bring back a lottery system?!

Lottery/GA question

I know last tour if your ticket was scanned you could bring at least 3 people with you for a total of four. Did anyone here ever exceed that limit or did you ever see like 6 people get in on one ticket?

well its quite obvious now that there wont be any lottery. Its all about the auction into the red zones... am i right?

^umm no there is supposed to be a lottery/'random scan' for the US shows at the very least. According to Paul McGuiness. There was an article a while back that stated that this system was going to be used again. Or at least that it was their intention to use it. I will see if I can scour it up in my emails and post it.

I remember reading that too. I think it is supposed to be a lottery for the US and Europe.

Does anyone know for sure how that is going to work out? Lottery...Europe vs. US? And what is the capacity for "the claw"...it looks to be more than the ellipse from Vertigo or the heart from Elevation....but does anyone know for sure yet what the numbers will be?

Will U2 officially release all this information, or we rely on our friends to post their experiences here?

Granted, we have months before the tour kicks off but I'm not the most patient person! :D

Actually, last tour you could bring in one person (not three). There were obviously exceptions, especially towards the end of the tour they were more relaxed about it.

The thing that pissed me off about the lottery was I don't think it was random.
I saw people getting buzzed in cuz they had their kids with them and even fuckin babies(dont get me started on this). It was like the only went to the gigs on the off chance Bono might pull them up onstage.

On a different note I'm looking forward to seeing a fellow Scotsman who works for U2 who threatened myself and my wife at the time all because I had a Celtic shirt on and called me a Fenian bastard.

I still maintain that until someone can provide anything better than 'i vaguely remember this article where so and so stated..', there is no lottery going to be in effect.

We saw what they did for stadiums last tour. That will happen for stadiums this tour. We also saw that, lottery or no lottery, the die hards that will line up, will line up. And they'll do whatever it takes to get it. Big deal.

it clearly says in this article that there will be a lottery.

"U2 will also resurrect its random upgrade program first seen on the Elevation tour in 2001, where select fans purchasing GA tickets will be moved closest to the stage."

yes. in la in nov. i had 3 people with me and alison made me choose one of them.

then 6 people (that everyone on here are aware of) got let in together on one scan.

can you say BULLSHIT!

if you read that article carefully it's got sooo many mistakes, it makes it hard to believe a word it says. and clearly, we all know elevation didn't have a lottery. they're probably just talking about the heart/circle/ellipse.

they actually did this on that Boston gig. i think that's what the article was referring to.

boston was in NO way a lottery. security/crew came out, and took the last back part of the line and walked them in and covered the rail with them right before the doors opened. as we, who had waited since 10 pm the night before night stood watching.

it had nothing to do with a lottery and wasn't remotely like the lottery in 2005. there was no chance for any of the front half like there was with the vertigo system.

Wow that would be annoying.....

whit a load of shite. Elevation was first come first served apart from Boston.

What u2 done in Boston was wrong and led to the Vertigo farce of the so called random entry to the elipse.

I was waiting in line at the bank the other day and they let someone at the end of the line in front of me. I complained and they told me they were bored of seeing me first in line everyday.

GA = bring yir kids, u will get in or maybe u will get a magic press of the button and u will get in
Filming a show = if u follow the band, wait all day, saved your money up all year or maybe 4 years for your u2 vacation= they will let the plebs in who just showed up in front of you.

changed days from when they didnt complain about people from all over Scotland and Ingurland showing up at every show:wave:

I dunno if any of you have been in bands but seeing the same faces following your band around the country or even in the same city is amazing and you should treat these fans as family. just my opinion:love:

I hope they do the lottery.

I went to enough shows back during the Elevation Tour to see the same people over and over again, and not just on this continent either. And they always slept outside, to the point where at one show I was at, not a single person in the first 40 in the line up was from the city that the band was performing in (in fact most of them were from another country and probably half I'd seen before). I think there's something a bit demented about that.

Besides, you'll get your choice rail spot if you sleep outside and don't get beeped in. I actually chose that spot at least 3 times because it gives you a different view and is in a lot of ways better than the inside. So no big deal.

I would see them in tents already for the next one when I was leaving. At a certain point it is obsessive/stalker and you wonder when it stops being about the music. I don't wonder, I know-I've seen it in action and known a couple of people.

I was also hassled once by a line Nazi person when I had my butt on that pavement all day, only to find out later that they cheated and put friends there who showed up hours later. GA shatters any delusions one may have about any sort of superior honesty of U2 fans as a general "rule". I guess that was some sort of defensive distractive measure on her part regarding her cheating.

I enjoyed every U2 show I ever went to long before they ever had GA. The GA has created a sense of entitlement/obsession among some fans and this ridiculous notion that you can't enjoy a U2 show any other way.

The reason for some of the same people being up front all the time is cheating..I said some of course, not all. I have heard about it from people I know to be honest and decent. There was crap going on with wristbands, etc. The fact that people bringing that up here are labeled as "jealous" and dismissed doesn't make it untrue. That's the sense of entitlement-that you would cheat to get that. Add on top of that that some of these same people are going to multiple shows all over the country/world.

I'm in favor of lottery too-but it would help to somehow crack down on cheaters if that could be possible. And nothing against kids but that shouldn't get you in either.

I'm going to one show this year with one GA. It would be nice to be on a level playing field and not have to deal with cheating. I can't and won't camp out and wherever I end up will be ok with me. But all I ask is a fair shot, especially when some others will be up close numerous times (and cheat for it if they have to). I know one thing for sure, I wouldn't-even if it means being in the back. I've had GA a few times on other tours and had a few good spots-and all were 100% legit. I also had seats and enjoyed that too-partly as a break from GA hassles/ bad experiences. I also got screwed over by that Boston thing in the first GA I ever had. But I still got a great spot and I didn't participate in any sitdown or any thing of the sort. I tried to reason with them too-no luck there. I guess they got over it because I heard they have already been seen on the promo tour, etc.

/\ /\ /\ Well spoken...I too was very unhappy with folks walking around with every single color of wristband in their pocket...Just so they could whip out the correct color for the night and get in.

I'm getting scared of GA right now.............
It would be great to see my favorite band up close, but not to have to fight for it. Oh well I guess I will just try, get there early meet some fans and hope for the best!

I love the lottery...it got me in the eclipse for Bono's birthday in Chicago last tour with a friend that was at best a casual fan of the band and in no way someone I was going to convince to sleepout (I went 1 for 5 on concerts I went to with GA tickets and if I never "win" again...I'll be happy). While I might be nuts enough myself to show up in the early morning the day of a show (once or twice per tour)...finding like minded friends has generally proven to be difficult (I would like to think that the majority of the rest of the world is truely the nuts...but I'm starting to suspect that it might be me).

at u2.com....

they haven't agreed the GC scheme yet- there's no certainty it will be the lottery system- it will be done on a venue by venue basis- so the rules will be whatever works for local H&S and federal/ government laws for each country

personally I believe if they were going to do the electronic lottery thing they would have simply said so at this point

since it's all stadiums this time- with a bigger GC and fewer shows (less chance of doing multiple nights) I'm sure it will be like it was in Europe last time- if you want to get in then get there early

since it's utterly exhausting doing the queueing thing I would guess most people would only have the stamina to do it a couple of times

^ regarding letting us know ahead of time.. Well that didn't happen last tour. My guess is that a definite policy of how things are gonna go won't happen ahead of time for this tour either.. I know, I am being a Debbie Downer but hey I don't have much confidence in this part/aspect of the whole thing. This is definitely a ongoing problem with the U2 camp/venue staff/promoters etc when it comes to tours (i.e. BIG lack of communication between the groups and the fans). I just accept it and deal the best I can.. Not that I like it or anything.
