Not just in this thread and not just because of Eno or Lee... it's becoming far too common a theme here..... more comparisons with Led Zep, Beatles, Pearl Jam, REM etc please. U2 covers all the genres that these bands live in and more.

U2 is better than all those bands imo. Despite that, U2 has influences from their sound. Especially The Beatles, R.E.M. and Led Zep. Therefore, anyone has the right to make comparisons with them.

At least those bands command respect from most music lovers. Obviously there are quite a few more bands in this bracket but none of the newer generation are worthy yet.

^Hmmm... maybe The White Stripes

I consider anyhting after 1998 "new generation".

yes maybe

But then again how many of these great bands reinvented themselves time and again and after 31 years put out an Album that could be considered thier greatest!

Hmmm... none
But there are some bands that keep reinveting themselves and putting out great albums until these days. For example, Primal Scream and R.E.M.. Especially Primal Scream on the "reinventing" part. The most creative band after U2.

Of course U2 are going to be compared to Snow Patrol, Killers, Coldplay and the like. Those bands may not have the career history (though some are up to album 5 or 6) but they are relevant in 2009.

U2's music has influenced many of today's bands - including Coldplay, Killers and Snow Patrol, even in a minor way. The often have common producers (Flood, Jacknife, Eno). U2 are also competing against these bands for listeners/radio airtime and consumer $$.

How many of the bands you mentioned have released an album in the past few years or will release new material in 2009.

None of the posts I've read in any forum is saying they are of U2's pedigree just yet, but comparisons are valid no matter what your opinion.

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, so sorry if this has already been debunked:

I was looking on youtube and came across a guy tossing around the following tracklist-

1 - Stand Up
2 - Magnificent
3 - Get On Your Boots
4 - Moment Of Surrender
5 - Unknown Caller
6 - No Line On The Horizon
7 - Crazy Tonight
8 - Every Breaking Wave
9 - Breathe
10 - Winter
11 - Cedars Of Lebanon
12? - Tripoli

I sent him a message, but I haven't heard back yet. I asked if he got that list from anywhere, and if he could share the source, or if he was merely compiling the known song titles in a random order and BS-ing us, which is likely (though you never know). Just thought I'd share.

We would have bought that tracklisting a week ago. However, Winter supposedly isn't on the album anymore, and Tripoli might be an opener.

Where did that news come from again? If so, that sucks...Winter is supposed to be the track they're playing in the U2.com clip where Dallas is walking around the studio writing stuff down, right?

Oh no not THAT list again.

It's fake, from months ago.

It's the order in which Q previewed the songs, with Tripoli added on. So, probably very inaccurate.

^Both are false. Bono already said that (unless there's more than one 150 bpm song on the album) that the opener is GOYB.

^They both are false. Bono already said that (unless there's two 150 bpm songs on the album) that the opener is GOYB.

Bono actually said the first song is 150bmp which could of meant the first single release and not the first song on the album

^Well, maybe... but it's weird.
I hope not, but I think he was talking about the album

Judging from the recent reports from Q and Rolling Stone, Get On Your Boots is the opening track and Cedars of Lebanon is the closer. Here's my guess on the tracklist - given that Winter is still on the album of course - based on the album that inspired the hunger for breaking new sonic ground again in the 21st century.

1. Get On Your Boots
2. Unknown Caller
3. Moment of Surrender
4. Magnificent
5. Breathe
6. Winter
7. No Line On The Horizon (Uptempo version)
8. Stand Up
9. Crazy Tonight
10. Tripoli
11. Every Breaking Wave
12. The Cedars of Lebanon

^Why people keep bringing up Winter. It's been discarded from the album.

My prediction

1. Get On Your Boots
2. Breathe
3. Tripoli
4. Magnificent
5. Moment of Surrender
6. Winter
7. No Line On The Horizon (uptempo version)
8. Stand Up
9. Crazy Tonight
10. Every Breaking Wave
11. Unknown Caller
12. The Cedars of Lebanon

Well, let it be my UK/Japan/Austraila Bonus track then if it makes you feel more at ease with the track. ;)

As you wish

My prediction:

01 - Get on Your Boots
02 - Stand Up
03 - Magnificent
04 - Unknown Caller
05 - Moment of Surrender
06 - Crazy Tonight
07 - Breathe
08 - [track we don't know about]
09 - Tripoli
10 - No Line on the Horizon
11 - [track we don't know about]
12 - Every Breaking Wave
13 - The Cedars of Lebanon

If Bono was referring to first single instead of first song on the album, as I believe he was, than it is more likely, given the most recent information that we have available, that Tripoli will be the opener (source RollingStone magazine).

^im calling bullshit on this.

Probably, but Mercy as a bonus track is actually a cool idea.

It would be interesting to see if they'd play it live, like they did with TGBHF and Fast Cars. It would probably be a crappy stripped down version like TGBHF, but meh.
