Round in circles here, sorry again who has even said they are not happy with there work? cant people for once actually just belive something someone says rather than have to over analyse it?

Wow, I'm actually loving the news Bono has given us. Fifty to sixty tracks!?

Holy crap. There is gonna be some great music I believe this time around.

I'd love to get Lanois' take on this. Ha, maybe him and Eno are pissed now that some or all of the band don't feel comfortable with their work.

It may be the ultimate hand to the face moment for them. As excited they have been by the album and certain songs they have to be floored by the band's decision to keep working at this stage.

Look, I would have felt better about the whole thing if U2 would have just denounced all of the headline stories in newspapers and internet articles announcing the album release date, album titles, etc.

Fuck, when some obscure ticket broker in Europe starts selling tickets for some yet unnamed tour they quickly dispell that misinformation, but major newspapers have headline stories about this album release and u2.com can't publish a small disclaimer saying the information's not true, nothing has been decided yet.? Oh please. Something happened to change their plans.

HMV is taking preorders for an album, and U2.com can't publish a story saying, hey don't preorder this, a decision regarding an album release hasn't been made?

Now weeks later, they finally publish this larger than life article about a conversation with Bono. Holy Shit, I've been called a blind follower plenty, but even I can't believe this.

I understand you're upset, but it doesn't look like U2 have known this all along, I guess the November release really seemed possible for them and now they have changed their minds (for whatever reasons). And I'm sure the record label would have liked a pre-Christmas release, I don't think HMV or other stores would have put the album up for pre-order if they had NO word at all from the record company. A little premature. The band might not have been happy with that.

I think Bono's writing style doesn't help, when I was a teenager I used to think that Bono was the most incredible orator on the planet, I don't think like that anymore.......I wish he would just come out and say in plain english, that "look, we're not quite there yet with the album, the poxy rythem section want a few more months to get it sounding exactly how they want.it will be out in the early new year", i would have taken this news a lot better if he'd said that, especially if he'd included my comment on Larry:)Sorry Adam. Reading his statement makes me see why people cannot stand him!! :wink:Though of course my love is still relatively strong.

Something odd has happened alright, Danny, Lillywhite and Bono and Edge had seemed almost certain it would be out in 208, a;ready hyping it as their best work yet. God knows what has happened, but I guess that will all start to become clear over the next few months. The album will not be out in 2008, i think we can be 100% on that, but it wont be out any later than March 09, I'm sure that they have the tour all scheduled and semi booked for summer 09.

I am very disappointed but not totally disheartened, not sure its such a great idea to give your drummer(if that is what happened)such a big role in decision making, I know that's one of the things that make U2 unique, but it's getting very annoying.

I think they should take a leap of faith and go with Bono and Edge's instincts and release it in NOV, they make the music for God's sake!

That said I can live with a march 09 release, any later is taking the piss.

Re-reading Bono's statement, I'm starting to think we won't see this until Nov. 2009.

Why? Just because he says "new year" and "we want 2009 to be our year" does not translate into "the album will be out March 2009" or "it will be out January 2009".
If they release it in Nov. 2009, we'll start hearing about it next summer, which is the middle of the year, the first single will come out in September.

I really hope that's wrong, but hear me out:

If he says "we've hit a rich songwriting vein and don't want to stop" that means they're still writing songs, no? Do you know how long it takes to record a song? Then produce it/mix it?

Nope. Nov. 2009.

Sorry guys. Let's just hope it's a great album. In the meantime let's all move on.....the accident has been moved to the side of the road.

This is actually a brilliant idea.....someone find out if anything is booked for next summer.....it would have to be by now, or at least within the next month. You can't just book MSG 2 months in advance.....

I'm not here to argue semantics and I don't think anyone can truly decipher what Bono says half the time (himself included) but when he says "we want 2009 to be our year" it does not make any sense to release the album in November since 80% of the year will be over...

Yes I realize the way the marketing machine works, I realize in terms of profit, releasing an album in Q4 is the best way to maximize sales.

And yes, I realize this has been the U2 way for the last two albums especially.

And yes, I realize I will probably get burned by this but is it impossible to believe that they want to do something different this time? Is it that hard to conceive them releasing the new album even in March or April of next year?

I don’t know, maybe I’m crazy but if I were to proclaim that I wanted 2009 to be “my year” I would release the album no later than July…

To make 2009 "their" year, U2 have to release the albums, singles and go on tour, plus possibly release the Spiderman soundtrack and maybe another project. No way this would become their year if they decided to release the album in November. Actually I like the thought of a whole U2 year.

I'm more upset that they just can't be upfront and honest than about the delay in the album release. And I'm responding more to the mindset that "nothing happened, they never announced anything officially" then to anything else.

Why would anyone say we want this to be our year when they mean only the end of it? That makes no sense. If it's your year, you're talking about album and tour...

Plus he says, "nearly ready", "and while they now know what shape most of the album will take", "we know we have to emerge soon"...

I'm telling you this along with Edge's comment of "Trying to weave it all together into a coherent collection is the challenge", it just came down to two maybe three tracks that they are not settled on...

No one is scrapping shit or starting over...

No idea what to think. I was so looking forward to a new U2 song in a few weeks.

it's tough to go on Bono's word when he's so full of hype it's not even funny anymore. Should give him the benefit of doubt in that they really want to continue writing and recording....but why not just make a 2nd album? Why does it have to be songs for this one?

Personally, I feel they are not happy with their work, and are afraid it won't sell. From all accounts, it's a departure from the past 2 albums, so that may explain some of their fears.

I don't want a perfect album. AB and JT are not perfect to me, they have great songs, and some weaker ones (that are still technically good). Not every song has to be a #1.

Wait, what does his writing style have to do with anything, he didn't write this press release...

Here's an old article from Dec 2007 for comparison:

Bono has claimed that U2’s new album is going to be “extraordinary” and that it will sound completely different to anything that has been heard before.

The frontman revealed that the band’s new sound has been inspired by a visit to Morocco last year.

Bono told the Independent: “Normally when you play a U2 tune, it clears the dance floor. And that may not be true of this. There’s some trance influences. But there’s some very hardcore guitar coming out of The Edge. Real molten metal.

“It’s not like anything we’ve ever done before, and we don’t think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either.”

The singer explained that going to a religious music festival in Fez, Morocco helped them write new material. He said: “It was a real humbling thing for a punk rock shouter, listening to these people who just close their eyes for 40 minutes and sing the most sophisticated melodies.”

He added: “We have enough material for two albums but it has to be extraordinary. And I think we’ve got that.”

:corn:

The part that got me thinking Nov 09 is that they're still writing.

They won't finish writing/recording/mixing/ to release in Jan 09.

If I'm wrong, great, but it's not realistic.

We'll wait and see!:applaud:

Wait, what does his writing style have to do with anything, he didn't write this press release...

I was referring to his way of expressing himself, most of the press release is made up of quotes from him isn't it?? Diamonds and coal and all that shite. Just getting a bit annoying.
I was just saying that he should come straight out and say what's going on rather than beating around the bush like that.

Writing can mean anything from rewriting a lyric to rewriting a bridge... After all this I seriously doubt they are still writing from scratch new songs to record for the album. U2 know what's at stake, there's no way they are putting it off a year. Plus, if they were this close to releasing in November, they've already started making preliminary plans to tour, which means they've already started to employ certain folks, they aren't going to put that off...

Oh his speaking style, I understand...

Yeah how boring would it be if a rock star came out and said, "we're postponing the album because Larry and Edge disagree about a few songs"...

I would appreciate hearing that a lot more than what we have been told.
Anyway...............I'm pretty sure it wont be delayed that long, Bono said 2009 will be theie year which would hardly be the case if the album wasn't out until November.

I'm depressed. Harry, Bono, Edge, Hagrid, Larry, Hermione, Adam and Dumbledore, why have you forsaken us?

Incidentally, I had a dream last night that I ran into the band and told them I was upset with them about the album delay, so they told me they'd play a new song. It was quicker with a lot of bass and a jazzy feel to it, but the lyrics reminded me of the ground beneath her feet. And so I told the boys it was pretty good, but that it reminded me of that, and Edge goes, "See Bono! I told you so! Back to work." And they left.

Weird.

anyway, enough of that....so....wtf did Final Drive mean....what does any of this mean now...are we going to get u2.com clips for the next 5 months or something?

Yeah, Final Drive was only posted like a week ago, they had to already know the album was going to be delayed. Weird.

I've just heard from some very reputable sources that U2's 'No Line on the Horizon' will be released on the same day of 'Chinese Democracy'!!!:hyper:
