I have the strong feeling that at least Bono wanted the album to be out this year (he also indicates it in his statement). So obviously Edge was right about the band being undecided about the release and the forces who said: Next year were stronger. I guess that's the year democracy works.

I’m not that upset about it being delayed, as in November/March/Whatever, but I don’t like how it wreaks of crimes past. We joke about Larry and everything, but if they release another shithouse, middle of the road, overproduced, shallow as fuck album of overcooked, painted by numbers, desperate for mainstream glory, embarrassing, mixed up songs in late 2009, and THEN somewhere down the line we hear 2008 songs or 2008 versions of songs that are actually quite brilliant….

It does seriously smell of fuck up or cold feet. Again.

Seriously, I don't know a single U2 album that fits your description.

If 60 songs have been written, and they want to write more material, why doesn't the band just release 12 of them now, not tour, and then release 12 in March. And then not tour, and then release another 12 next November, and then tour in 2010? Oh wait, I forgot--U2 likes to hold onto their written material so they can scrap it during the sessions of the next album.

there's NO chance of this album coming out in early 2009 even if it's completely finished.

mark my words. u2 will never, ever release another album at any time other than to capitalise on the christmas/holiday rush.

lol true, i say Fuck u2. we all know they are just using all the left over songs from atyclb and bomb to put another commercial album.

Whatever happens happens, and I can live with album being postponed.
BUT - if I read the things that Bono said and it was someone else saying it I would throw up. It's so pathetic and self important it's incredible. "We are deep in the hole" "diamonds and not cole"....come on!!! pure crap...
When I see words like these I instantly think of "This is Spinal Tap" :)

at least we will have new "Tv on the Radio" by the end of September, and I'm also looking forward to new "Kings of Leon" because I love their new song "Sex on Fire".. so at least there will be other good music around before the new album comes out..

I had high expectations but now I'm a little bit in doubt

cheers

No I'm actually dead serious. Some posts here make me sick. People are clearly overreacting. Anger management would be my advice for some of you.

:|

4.5 years is a long time. 54 months. Do you enjoy the wait? Is it something you look forward to? I'm not angry. I'm just absolutely dumbfounded that I've been a part of 4 albums being recorded since the last U2 album came out. Overreacting? Perhaps you're underreacting.

ETA: and the album earnie was referring to was HTDAAB. A large populace of interference is split: a lot of people like the Chris Thomas Bomb better than the Steve Lillywhite Bomb, and think the additional time in the studio killed the raw, spontaneous energy of Vertigo, All Because of You, and others, which were released through the digital box-set.

Some peoples lives must really be so shallow if they can never belive a single word the band says,

very very sad, and imo i would think you should stop waiting for the new album if you feel that way and lead your life doing something you actually enjoy, rather than finding fault or not beliving all the time.

Okay, I’ll play along and dress it down a little seeing as you obviously don’t think that way about the Bomb. I think it’s fair to say that even it’s biggest fans around here generally acknowledge that it’s overcooked. That they probably spent too much time on it, worked it over one too many times. That in itself is no criticism of the songs on the album. I am a massive, massive, massive Pop fan but I am more than happy to acknowledge that it’s mix is terrible and that there are extremely obvious editing mistakes in there too. They needed that extra month. I think with the Bomb they did the same to the opposite extreme. They should have let it go earlier. They undercooked Pop and overcooked the Bomb.

We know that with Pop their mistake was due to the Popmart tour booking. We know with the Bomb that they had a near complete album in 2003, and scrapped it based on a belief that – essentially - it was not commercially viable enough, and went about re-working those songs to within an inch of their lives. I’m just saying, I doubt this situation now is all a fine and dandy “oh but we just love working on this album, we never want the working to end”. I’d bet they’re either not happy with what they have, or they’ve got cold feet over it’s general sound or direction.

As others have said, they’ve spent a while talking up how much they have, how great it is, and how ridiculously exciting the new direction and sound is. I reckon they’ve got cold feet, or some of them do, and they’re now going to dismantle this bomb too.

Other people's lives must be shallow if they think the depth of a person's life is based around a middle-aged pop band.

no, that's incorrect Earnie...you couldn't be more wrong and baseless in your arguement....you don't know that, we don't know that....nobody here knows that....

I can't even believe you would think for a second that you really know why. We don't know shit.

Other people's lives must be shallow if they think the depth of a person's life is based around a middle-aged pop band.

I'd just like to say that the fact that they're a "middle-aged pop band" is irrelevant

'We want 2009 to be our year' - This is the most depressing line of that entire interview or whatever....it crushes any hope I have that it will be released before 2009...I mean Bono would never say this unless it was for sure....just the way he worded that....this REALLY fucking sucks.

I blame U2 for the delay simply because it means having to endure the endless bitching in this forum for another couple of months.

Had they not delayed the album, the bitching would have ceased for about a month, only to resume in greater force than ever before once the b-sides were unearthed.

Pop wouldn't have been saved by some minor tweaking
(as the remixes mostly point out)
it would have needed certain songs to be axed and new ones being written to make any sense as an album

Bomb does sound somehow overcooked
but in my opinion all the songs do sound better than the earlier versions that have surfaced
I don't think going from Native Son to Vertigo for example is a commercial decision
Native Son just isn't that good, which doesn't mean that Vertigo is brilliant but still

I see no reason not to believe that the band feels they are on a roll creatively and want to make maximum use of this
it would actually sort of coincide with the little news we have received the last couple of months

besides, I don't understand why people who are obviously aware that Boms was released quite a couple of years ago and who must be aware that the record industry has changed an incredible amount since can not believe that U2 would change their marketing strategy

if U2 were as stuck in past as their fan base they would just have quit in 1999

:applaud: This could be cool!

after the white and the black album the transparent album!

You're forgetting the red album, the blue album, and the green album. All three of those are even by the same band.

Way to ignore the point of the post.

no no...I realize I wasn't addressing the point of the post....hence the casual "I'd just like to say that..." cause it seemed like you were using "middle aged" to support your point that it is pathetic if the depth of someone's life is based on a band. I was merely making sure you weren't making a foolish connection.

anyway, enough of that....so....wtf did Final Drive mean....what does any of this mean now...are we going to get u2.com clips for the next 5 months or something?

Also one thing I find interesting is that Bono and the rest of the band (most likely) were vacationing in France recently....but they reported being satisfied with the album prior to the vacation....now it seems the vacationing is over, and the news drops....am I following this correctly? ...because something isn't right here :hmm:

I too am a bit confused by things, so much of the work on the NLOTH album seemed to be nearing its conclusion.

What about the video Anton shot? Will this still be the lead off single?

What about the artwork they had been developing? They seemed pretty decided on this. Presumably the band felt it in some way reflected the quality of the music on the album, but now that they're still mining this creative vein, I'm guessing the album is going to take on a different shape. Will it be scrapped?

Maybe its just me, but to a certain extent this does seem like a seperate project, the NLOTH album seemed resolved, with the songs practically in the bag, the video and the artwork also nearing completion too. This seems like something else.

I still have faith in the guys and hope this decision reaps real rewards for them and us but I hope this extra studio time doesn't blur what has appeared to me to have been an extremely focused and creatively inspired process for the album.
