yay you good guys :D

Are there only participants and athletes there? Were there any tickets for the public for this?

Yup - there were public tix available. At least 4 of my friends were there tonight. Got several texts from them, which was fun! I don't even want to know how much they paid for their tickets. :crack:

Two lines into the anthem, and I'm already making my bitch face at the TV.

Yeah, I wasn't such a fan. Pretty dress, but the arrangement was WAY too slow. Plus, who the hell is she??!! I mean, I've heard her name in the last few days, but they couldn't get a well-known Canadian singer to do the anthem? It just didn't make sense to include her. But whatever.

I was a bit bored at first, but then things began to pick up after about a half hour or so. Nelly Furtado & Brian Adams were obviously lipsynching which was annoying. C'mon guys - sing the damn song live!

There were some pretty spectacular moments, though. LOVED the Joni Mitchell song (wish she had sung it live) and the acrobatics in the air. The glitch with the lighting of the cauldron was a bit cringe-inducing and a let-down, but ah well. I knew it couldn't be anyone but Gretzky lighting the cauldron. Glad he got to do the outdoors one himself. :)

All right, I'm out. Time to hit the DVR, watch The Soup and then call it a night.

See you all later! :)

Wow, what a colossal fuck up. The most attention the country has received in over two decades, probably ever...here comes the big moment...we've had years to make sure this works...the whole world is watching...FUCK!

Cue the Price Is Right fail music. I'm seriously still a bit in shock that they actually fucked up the torch lighting, one of the most sacred events in all of sports. The looks on Nash and Gretzky's faces...fucking priceless and approaching a level of awkward that will probably never be exceeded, especially on such a grand scale.

Anyway, it's all good.

Wow, ok. If you want to say something to me about my post, say it. Say "GAF, your post is bullshit and here's why." Not some stupid joke. Or just don't respond at all.

i like being passive aggressive though :depressed:

all i know is it the cauldron thing wasn't that bad and in 20 years won't be the big story to come out of the day. it's worth a handful of canada can't get it up jokes and on we go. but yeah. let's have sport now.

Particularly looking forward to the Ice Hockey tournament, and the aerials. Two things that my country have good chances in.

It caused a 45 second delay - big whoop. I had almost forgotten about it til I came here

(By the way, that cauldron was only a symbolic one as they extinguished it shortly after the ceremony finished)

I'm just watching the rest of it right now. Thank goodness for fast-forward.

Loving kd lang ... but why is she wearing David Byrne's big suit from Stop Making Sense??? I remember watching her during the closing (?) ceremonies at the Calgary games in '88, back in her punky cowgirl days.

Also, I really loved the effects they did with the floor - the orcas moving through the water were gorgeous!

And I honestly didn't know Donald Sutherland was Canadian.

Was it just me or were the four native phallic statues sponsored by Viagra???

Apparently we can get it up just fine thank you.

I thought they looked rather sleek and missile-like, very threatening, as though they were about to launch. Don't fuck with us world, we're not as docile as we seem. We just disguise our aggression with native art. :cute:

Exactly.

I don't know if it was just Comcast or an NBC thing, but the sound kept cutting out all night. Boo.

Oh, FAIL! My DVR stopped recording just as the thingies were finally rising from the floor! :grumpy:

Oh well.

You missed the best part, Wayne Gretzky riding in the back of a pickup truck through the rain while waving awkwardly at drunk people (that just left the bar to run next to the truck). He nearly bailed when the truck had to slam the brakes to avoid hitting someone. And to top it all off the top of the cauldron didn't actually light when it was supposed to, someone obviously had to hit an ignitor switch somewhere because the torch flame wasn't able to light the whole thing.

:lmao:

Oh well, the opening ceremony is just a bore fest on the way to the real excitement of the Games, the sports! I'm excited for speed skating tonight, and I was for the Men's Downhill too, but it was postponed till Monday because the weather is apparently too warm and the course would get all chewed up by the end.

^ True story.

The Wayne Gretzky thing was really heinous, I'm sorry to say. It looked very cheap and very small-town parade. And it lasted FOREVER. I can't believe that anyone in their right mind thought it was a good idea.

K.D. Lang was fantastic, on the other hand.

Apparently there is a riot going on in Vancouver at the moment, with protesters smashing windows of the HBC. Really nice touch.

I'm so glad I got home from work last night in time to watch the last hour or so of the opening ceremony. Some of it was kind of ridiculous, but hearing k.d. lang sing "Hallelujah" was worth it.

Gee, great. Vancouver gets its own version of the WTO riots!

Destruction is always the best way to get your point across. It's always the anarchist jackasses (or general jackasses) who ruin usually otherwise peaceful protests.

They're saying the protesters are numbering between 50-200, hard to tell, and arrests have been made.

We just got an email at work about the G20 summit in TO at the end of June and how we are not to schedule meetings at the office (I'm in the financial district), and basically lay low. I'm going to be on vacation as of June 10, so thankfully I can avoid this inevitable clusterfuck. How irritating.

Men's NH ski jump final is set to go in about 5 mins, I hope the CTV people stop yammering and show that.

I work right downtown T.O. too and according to the Star, the municipal and provincial government are trying to convince the feds to move the G20 location to the Exhibition Grounds instead of holding it at the MTCC, which, logistically-speaking, makes a helluva lot more sense.

Simon Ammann of Switzerland just won the first gold medal of the Olympics in the NH ski jump. Fun!

If I weren't feeling so pro-Canadian right now, I'd be inclined to agree with you. ;) It was quite anticlimactic. I'm not sure what they could have done differently though, other than to have the real cauldron closer to/right outside of BC Place? I'm not familiar with the area, so I don't know how feasible that would have been. They sure couldn't expect 20,000+ spectators, dignitaries and athletes to sit through 3 hours of ceremonies in the pissing down rain, and that's exactly what you get with that region.
