My initial guess is to try and normalize this sort of thing for the senate trial

See!!! Trump does this sort of thing all the time!!! How can there be criminal intent or bribery when he has no idea what he’s doing!!?!

Look... I have zero idea what happened with this seemingly random trip to Walter Reed on Saturday, and I don't want to get into conspiracy theories and all that.

But I do know this... I was at Walter Reed Saturday. I arrived about 2 hours before him and left about 30 minutes before he arrived. I was running a work event in their gym. I drove into the facility in a van filled with basketball equipment, escorted by a USO employee. The van wasn't searched. There wasn't any extra security. There was one dude with his big gun and terrible Movember stache' screening cars.

There was no extra police presence on the streets when I left. Everything was perfectly normal.

I've been around this city long enough now to know that this is not the SOP for a planned POTUS visit.

Whatever it was, it was certainly not something that was on the schedule. No chance. Maybe he choked on a pretzel. Fuck if I know. Maybe Eric glued his mouth shut.
:hmm: That IS interesting.
I've been in DC a bunch of times since '70 including when the motorcade was out and about (as well as when he's [for now] visiting nyc) the security at place and area would not just be the regular stuff if a scheduled visit by The President was going to happen.

My favorite was his closing statement. He said - my friends across the isle want to say that you were working an irregular channel in Ukraine and we know that that isn't true, that you were actually working the official channel.

Yeah Einstein - you just made a clear argument that the "official channel" that included the president, and the state dept, were the ones working on the nefarious dealings, and the other honest people were left out.

bravo buddy
Heh

Unfortunately, what they do have also, are stupid, supporters (sorry)

But the fact that when you look at the top lines of impeachment polls, and there is a question that asks - Did Trump ask the Ukranian President to investigate Burisma and the Bidens?
And 35% of people say NO. That is what we are dealing with here. There are the plainly stupid, and there are also the stubbornly ignorant because they want someone this racist and cruel and horrible to be in power.

I use the term "willfully ignorant" - and your last sentence is unfortunately true for a certain amount of the American people.

I am completely fascinated to see how America would react to a gay candidate. I think it would be an issue, the WaPo article on Chasten’s brothers was heartbreaking and relatable (not directly) to me, and felt very real.

Then again, 11 years ago we elected someone named Barack Hussein Obama. So anything is possible.

I have noticed the gay jokes in clickbait headlines (“Pete on top” “Pete blows past field in Iowa”) all this week since, um, topping the Iowa polls. It’s not unintentional.
Having not seen these headlines, but yeah, def intentional. It would interesting, and scary for Pete and his family and friends, team etc, what with seriously violent anti-LGBTQI assaults still happening.

Yeah, there's definitely people out there who are trying or will try and make a thing out of Pete's sexuality, for sure. But honestly, I ultimately think, or at least, I'd like to think, that most Americans would be like, "...so what?" at the end of the day. I mean, if he is doing well in more rural states, I'm guessing that's got to be a good sign of some sort.

Interesting point about the rural states, though we in the cities have our share of (usually) conservative religious people who also hold discriminatory views.

It will totally become an issue. ie, do you think Putin from super homophobic Russian is going to take some homo seriously? And will go from there — being gay is far more of an issue globally than being a woman or being non-white. We are put to death and/or jailed in many countries.

But maybe voters won’t care. I do think it will be an issue, because there is no bar that Trump will not lower.

Yes, Trump, would lower that bar. Ugh, it'd be awful! Still it might be possible that enough voters won't care- especially with change has happened over these past 20+ years.

As far as us women goes, imho it maybe closer in comparison than you think. I mean bride burnings, honor killings, "you can't be raped if you're married" crap, women wanting to get a higher education, or an education past, what, 4th? grade in some places, being assaulted, acid thrown when a woman doesn't follow the rules, even at times jail.
If the USA (shudders) ever became a Christian Theocracy the LGBTQI community, and most women, and people of color would be in for even more trouble, and worse!

I like the "et moo, Nunes?"

Nothing says "I'm tired of all these taxes" like moving to a place that literally has "taxation without representation" printed on their license plates.
Heh.
Poor Rep Eleanor Holmes, i believe, (along with others) has fighting fir DC representation for decades!

bye-bye, BiBi.

Oh, i suuuuure hope so!

Now this is a interesting/troubling theory i hadn't heard...

I wish someone would whistleblow about that. I never understood why Trump agreed to help Ukraine since it didn’t go along with every other Russian wish he’s fulfilled. That makes perfect sense.

I think i actually had a vague passing thought during these hearings about why he did send aid to Ukraine as per post right above posits.

I totally disagree. Trump would not only love this but would thrive in that setting. Joe is old, confused and frankly horribly uninspired in debates. Trump will bang on how corrupt he and his son are, and get in a million soundbytes that the idiot media will replay over and over again.

I tend to agree with this. I just don't get the appeal of Joe Biden. I won't be exactly holding my nose if I have to vote for him, but I won't be enthused. It just bothers me that better candidates can't seem to gain traction while old Uncle Joe stays in the lead. There are other moderate candidates if that's the issue--Klobuchar, Pete. Both would be so much better than Biden. And I don't understand why he has such a hold on the black vote.

Oh well. He's still better than Trump.

Heh... Didn't catch tbe Nunes news till this afternoon. Heh, heh, heh. House will probably open an ethics investigation on him.

I'd prefer in a live TV hearing Rep Schiff to turn Nunes and say something to he effect of "so... how do you explain your earlier involvement with the irregular channel of so called diplomacy with Guiliani against VP Biden and his son?" .

Heh. :corn:

The Dems need to drag this out. Let New info related to Russia come in, involve Nunes, Wrong Johnson, Pompey, Rudy, and Orange Traitor. If they rush it and it goes to the senate, Trump won’t be removed and then his whole 2020 campaign will center around the phony Witch Hunt and how he was victorious.

They definitely don’t need to drag this out. The facts are sufficient. We’ve already determined that the facts don’t matter to the GOP. Swiftly move to impeach, and when it fails let the American people determine the fate of the president and the GOP folks who protected him.

to anyone who was of an age to remember, when the clinton impeachment happened was there the same kind of "the senate is going to vote against it anyways" or at around the same stage as we are now did people actually think there was a chance he would be impeached and removed?

RBG hospitalized again.

It's a long, long time until the adults are back in charge.

Increase the # of seats and pack the SCOTUS immediately. The GOP wouldn't think twice, they'd just do it.

we're under one year until the presidential election, should the worst case scenario happen (god forbid), the senate won't vote on a new supreme court nominee before the people decide who should be president, right?

Are we still excited about impeachment, now that it's moving on to the Senate ?
It’s my understanding that we still haven’t actually started.

i believe Rep Schiff & Co have not totally closed the door yet on any more hearings. Maybe depends on any near close to grabbing info. I don't think i want them to wait through the dragged out process of getting possible court ordered appearances for some of the above mentioned people.

Oh and don't forget John Boltan possibly testifying.

Ah, here we go from the LA Times, yesterday on further hearings.

We’re not foreclosing the possibility of additional depositions or hearings, but we’re also not willing to wait months and months and let them play rope-a-dope with us in the courts,” Schiff said, referring to ongoing legal battles over the refusal of some witnesses to testify or provide documents.

Schiff said the committee will work on “both tracks” of continuing to investigate while “beginning to put our report together.” He refused to say when the report may come out or whether he believes articles of impeachment are warranted.

Hmmm, with way less communication devices etc available - the Net had just become the WWW about 2 or 3 years earlier so the average American wasn't really on it yet in a big way - I think some Republicans hoped he'd be convicted, I think i was concerned, but not really upset. He was still rather popular.

For the reasons you stated above is why this absolutely needs to be dragged out until the election. Voters need to be going to the polls thinking “Let’s just get Trump out already so I don’t have to hear about impeachment anymore”.

Yes, everyone knew that the Senate was going to vote against it. And everyone knew that, even if it was technically perjury in a civil suit, it was political revenge and in no way whatsoever anything to do with the functioning of the executive office or national security. That’s why the GOP was punished in the ‘98 midterms — not because impeachment necessarily crates a backlash, but because everyone knew the Clinton impeachment had no bearing on actual governance.

Yup.

Lying about sex... (think of all those holier-than-thou Repuglicans!) The only person he had to answer to was Hillary.

New Documents Reveal Details of Pompeo’s Role in Ukraine Affair

Edward Wong and Kenneth P. Vogel 1 hr ago

WASHINGTON — Internal State Department emails and documents released late Friday further implicate Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a campaign orchestrated this year by President Trump and his personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani to pressure Ukraine for political favors.

The emails indicate that Mr. Pompeo spoke at least twice by telephone with Mr. Giuliani in March as Mr. Giuliani was urging Ukraine to investigate Mr. Trump’s rivals, and trying to oust a respected American ambassador to Ukraine, Marie L. Yovanovitch, who had been promoting anticorruption efforts in the country. Mr. Pompeo ordered Ms. Yovanovitch’s removal the next month. The first call between Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Pompeo was arranged with guidance from Mr. Trump’s personal assistant, the documents suggest.

The documents also show that the State Department sent members of Congress a deliberately misleading reply about Ms. Yovanovitch’s departure after they asked about pressure on her. As part of the effort to oust her, Mr. Giuliani and his associates encouraged news outlets favorable to the president to publicize unsubstantiated claims about Ms. Yovanovitch’s disloyalty to Mr. Trump.

The documents, and recent congressional testimonies in the impeachment inquiry, tie Mr. Pompeo closely to efforts by Mr. Trump and Mr. Giuliani to persuade the Ukrainian government to announce investigations that could help Mr. Trump politically. Those include investigations into the family of former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., a Democratic presidential candidate, and claims that Ukrainian officials worked to undermine Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign. As Mr. Trump sought those investigations, he and his team held up $391 million of military aid critical to Ukraine — which is in a grinding war against Russian-backed separatists — and a coveted White House meeting.

The release of the documents, obtained by a liberal watchdog group that had filed a public records request, came as Mr. Pompeo refused to voluntarily hand over State Department documents about Ukraine to the House committees leading the impeachment inquiry. Representative Adam B. Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said on Wednesday that Mr. Pompeo was engaged in a Watergate-style “obstruction of this investigation.”

The State Department released the documents in response to a lawsuit brought by the liberal watchdog, American Oversight, whose founders include lawyers who worked in the Obama administration.

Austin Evers, the executive director of the group, said that the documents revealed “a clear paper trail from Rudy Giuliani to the Oval Office to Secretary Pompeo to facilitate Giuliani’s smear campaign against a U.S. ambassador.”

Mr. Pompeo has refused to answer questions about his role in the Ukraine affair. The State Department did not reply on Saturday to detailed questions about the documents or witness testimonies in the inquiry that put the secretary at the center of the matter.

The documents bolstered testimony delivered Wednesday by Gordon D. Sondland, the American ambassador to the European Union and a player in the pressure campaign on Ukraine. He told lawmakers in a public hearing that Mr. Pompeo had full knowledge of the campaign and even approved certain hard-line tactics. Mr. Pompeo and his top aides “knew what we were doing, and why,” Mr. Sondland said, noting that “everyone was in the loop.” He recited email exchanges he had had with Mr. Pompeo on the pressure campaign.

Drag this nasty pompous ass into the hearing room, now!

And this is my only hope with this process. It’s going to continue to expose the president and his men to what they are, a crime family

It also exposes the GOP to what they are, a cult.

My parents and some of my friends back home were against impeachment because why do it if he’s not going to be removed ?

Because it’s the right thing to do. We have to do this process. We have to show younger generations right and wrong, and the world what this country means (besides an idea)

Let the corruption come out, and in the end maybe some values or true character wins. Look at what these women and war veteran have shown this country.

Look at what these old white politicians have shown.

I’m grateful of this experience to see there are still people with a moral compass in our government. While the Prez and congress get all the publicity, it’s these civil workers who keep us afloat and safe

lying liar sarah sanders says that it hurts her when people call her a liar. the person who admitted under oath that she made up lies really doesn't like it when people say that she lies. we should probably leave sarah "liar" sanders alone and stop constantly reminding people that she made up lies and told them to the media literally every single day for the benefit of a racist sexual predator, and earned a six figure salary while doing it.

after all, someone said some mean things to her once while she was eating tacos. this liar has clearly been through hell. hasn't she suffered enough for all the lies she made up? sad!

Yeah, but it's the rest of us who need to be more civil you know.
