This is bound to change - I don't really know where to put NLOTH actually.

Wow, I thought War was more popular.

3) Pop
4) The Unforgettable Fire
5) Zooropa
6) The Joshua Tree
7) All That You Can't Leave Behind
8-11) Whatever
12) Rattle and Hum

Wow, only 12? Didn't The Beatles have 13 albums in six-and-a-half years of recording?

Anyhoo (and sorry, I couldn't do it by three):

High amongst the greatest LPs I've ever heard by anyone:
Achtung Baby
The Joshua Tree

Not quite the greatest LPs I've heard, but still brilliant and showing much of U2's best-ever work:
War
The Unforgettable Fire
Rattle and Hum (if studio tracks only are judged)

Very good:
How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
Zooropa
Rattle & Hum (if the entire album as a whole is judged)

All good, but I have to be in a certain mood:
Pop
Boy
All That You Can't Leave Behind
October
No Line On The Horizon

I am ranking Passengers, because I consider it as much a U2 album as any of the others (in fact, more of an album than RAH), and because I think it is one of their finest efforts. Feel free to read my list as if it isn't there and mentally re-number it accordingly if you disagree that much.

Exceptional U2 Listening
1. The Unforgettable Fire
2. Boy
3. Passengers

Very Fine U2 Listening
4. The Joshua Tree
5. October

Fine U2 Listening
6. Pop
7. War
8. No Line On The Horizon
9. Zooropa

Patchy (with moments of brilliance) U2 Listening
10. Achtung Baby
11. Rattle And Hum

Mediocre U2 Listening
12. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

Disowned
13. All That You Can't Leave Behind

2. The Unforgettable Fire
3. Boy

8. No Line On The Horizon
9. Pop
10. Rattle & Hum*
11. All That You Can't Leave Behind
12. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
13. Passengers

*would be higher if it was just the studio stuff + b-sides.

ATYCLB has sentimental value to me because I drifted away from U2 during Zooropa and POP and Beautiful Day is what got me back into them again.

/sap

Bada-BING!
1. Achtung Baby (I think Bono’s voice is best here, i guess I’m biased as it’s how I discovered U2. As a guitar fan it doesn’t get much better than this for me)
2. Joshua Tree (This album defined images of the American Desert for me as a kid in Australia, and lived up to it 100% when I visited the Joshua Tree! I’m a sucker for a thematic album: In God’s Country!)
3. No Line (The flow of the first four tracks are just amazing IMO. I rate the middle section, and I think Boots is underrated (I think a bit too salacious for most with its eastern influence) and the moodier tracks at the end are just awesome)

4. Pop
5. Zooropa
6. ATYCLB
7. Unforgettable Fire
8. Atomic Bomb
9. Rattle & Hum
10. Boy
11. War
12. October

1. THE JOSHUA TREE    :heart::heart: Masterpiece.

2. No Line On The Horizon :love::love:

4. Achtung Baby
5. Pop (I'm not sure I prefer AB than Pop, it depends, but now - yes)

*

6. War
7. Rattle & Hum
8. All That You Can't Leave Behind
9. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
10. Zooropa
11. Boy
12. The Unforgettable Fire

For now

Loosely rating the albums based on how many tracks I can listen to before I have to hit the "skip" button:

1. The Joshua Tree
2. The Unforgettable Fire
3. War
4. Boy
5. Achtung Baby
6. Pop
7. October
8. How To Dismantle
9. Rattle N Hum
10. No Line on the Horizon
11. All That You Can't Leave Behind
12. Zooropa

*3-5 and then 8-11 interchange with one another (in their respective brackets), depending on mood.
