Oh ok.. so if they include all those songs, then you're totally for it?!

I can't be "in" with any SINGLE DISC compilation called "Definitive" for a band like U2. I'm not that kind of fan. U2 deserves AT LEAST a 3 CD (4 CD including all their singles 1979-2005 and memorable songs like The Electric Co, Surrender, Bad, MLK, Running To Stand Still, The First Time, etc would be fair and make justice to their prolific career) for something intended as The Definitive Compilation

Why upto 2005? I thought you hated the last 2 albums.

The other thing is how many fans do you think will buy a 3 or 4 CD set??? Single or Double CD set would sell a lot more!

Personally I wish they had made this a double CD set at the end of their career, whenever they wish to end it.

 Yes I don't like them at all, but I have to admit that a lot of fans like those albums and it's pretty evident that any compilation would be incomplete without stuff from ATYCLB and HTTDAB

Considering the singles collection 1979-2005 and emblematic U2 songs, making a 4 CD compilation would be pretty easy, really !

16-Gone

Disc Four

I beat you to it!:)

Amazing how similair our 4 CD sets are!

I noticed the same my friend !!! Pretty similar compilations

That's what I'm talking about when I point out about The DEFINITIVE Best of U2

Now, about the possible problem in getting a 4 CD set, the solution is simple: Have a look at the legendary Beatles Red and Blue albums  They still go on selling and they are a great representation of the endless creativity and brillance of the fab four

So U2 could easily release 1979-1990 (or 1991) and 1991-2006 Red and Blue albums

It's about time U2 do something like that :(

My Picks:

I Will Follow (Boy)
Gloria (October)
Sunday Bloody Sunday (War)
New Years Day (War)
Pride (UF)
Were The Streets Have No Name (JT)
Bullet The Blue Sky (JT)
With or Without You (JT)
Desire (R & H)
One (AB)
Mysterious Ways (AB)
Stay or Discotheque - tough choice (Zooroa vs Pop)
Beautiful Day (ATYCLB)
Vertigo (HTDAAB)
The Saints Are Coming (new song)
Mercy (new song)

Based on the press release of this 1 cd collection being a definitive "Best Of," I'd look no further than what songs are consistantly played year after year in the live sets to get an idea what U2 thinks are their most popular songs.

The only cut I'm really unsure of would be "Gloria" as well as the Pop or Zooropa cuts. They could very easily stick in another Achtung Baby or Joshua Tree song which would be ever more predictable. It would be nice if they threw fans a bone and included "11 O' Clock Tick Tock" and/or "A Celebration" both of which are U2's rarest tracks to find on cd instead of any one or two of the three tracks I mention above as being "iffy" considering the language of the press release. "Mercy" is the obvious choice of being the 2nd "new" track but really, who knows?

I'd also bet heavily that at least one if not both "new" tracks will be played during the upcoming tour as U2's way of giving fans on the rescheduled dates something of a "bonus" for their patience.

T.B..

It is my prediction that OCTOBER, ZOOROPA, and POP will be COMPLETELY IGNORED.

I agree. The only chance Zooropa has for representation is Stay. October will be completely forgotten - if Gloria couldn't make the cut on the Best Of 1980-1990, why would it make the cut on a CD with even more competition for room? And I'm not holding my breath for anything from Pop.

Here's what I think is a reasonable chronological expectation:

1. I Will Follow
2. Sunday Bloody Sunday
3. New Year's Day
4. Pride
5. Where The Streets Have No Name
6. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
7. With Or Without You
8. Desire
9. All I Want Is You
10. One
11. Mysterious Ways
12. Stay (or Even Better Than The Real Thing ... or if they want another eighties hit, Angel Of Harlem)
13. Beautiful Day
14. Stuck In A Moment or Elevation
15. Vertigo
16. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
17. The Saints Are Coming
18. New Song

Personally, I don't think that could be considered to be a 'definitive' Best Of in any sense. It completely fails to cover the depth of U2's style. But it would be hugely commercially successful and fulfills the U2.com criteria of 'well known tracks'. I think any prediction of a non-single making this tracklisting to be hugely optimistic.

I would suspect that you won't see 'Stuck' included this time around, as I know Bono stated that 'Walk On' and 'Elevation' deserve a place on a future release. Why 'Elevation', I have no idea. That is the only song I ever skip on ATYCLB and the only one that the vast majority of casual U2 fans seem to think is cheesy. I agree with Bono on 'Walk On', though.

I don't think this release is supposed to cover the depth of U2's style - and it would miss the point to believe it has such aspirations. The second Best Of hasn't been selling nearly as much as the first one did. This release is simply to close the gap for the casual U2 fan who wants 'Pride' on the same disc as 'Beautiful Day', for example. This is the record company's way of fixing the problem - and making a lot of money in the process.

Guys, no matter what the tracklisting turns out to be, someone will be moaning because they didn't include one song or the other ("Why oh why isn't Miami here?"). That's the blessing of the computers, iPods and CD burning...

And I can see most of us downloading the new track from YSI/ as soon as it hits the radio or Internet... and then we'll buy the album, just to have our collection complete.

Most likely tracklist (or, atleast what I think would be the most "definitive U2" they could cram onto a single disc)...

Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year's Day
Pride
Where the Streets Have No Name
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
With or Without You
Desire
The Fly
Mysterious Ways
One
Stay
HMTMKMKM
Discotheque
Beautiful Day
Stuck in a Moment...
Vertigo

Then the 2 new tracks, of course...

We could see one of the rattle and hum tracks dropped in favor of either Mysterious Ways or Sometimes you cant make it on your own.... maybe even City of blinding lights.
I picked 3 ATYCLB songs because i firmly believe elevation and walk on will be included having missed out last time, and there is no way BD will be left out (hell.... on this kind of compilation it is probably the first track to be included)
I also dont think Pop will be ignored. Discotheque, with or without the boom-chas, will be on this disc.

How about this year releasing The Rest Of 1980-1990 and next year release The Rest Of 1990-2000? The songs that didn't make the best of's but that are still very good?

I won't buy this bulls*** either. I'll download for free around there

If I had to spend my money, I want to do it for something decent and worthwhile  not for more of the same crap just to make the guys of Universal Music richer and fatter :madspit:

ok 16 of u2 biggest hits here goes my guess on the tracklisting for the album

1. Where the steets have no name

I Will Follow
Gloria
Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year´s Day
Pride (In the Name of Love)
Where the Streets Have No Name
I Still Haven´t Found What I´m Looking For
With or Without You
Desire
All I Want Is You
One
Mysterious Ways
Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me, Kill me
Discotheque
Beautiful Day
Vertigo

I bet this is the one.

my take on the 16 "best known" u2 songs:

1 sunday bloody sunday
2 new years day
3 pride
4 where the streets
5 still haven't found
6 with or without you
7 desire
8 angel of harlem
9 one
10 mysterious ways
11 discotheque
12 sweetest thing
13 beautiful day
14 walk on
15 elevation
16 vertigo

not many people are including Sweetest Thing, but I have a strong feeling the best of will include it...

1. They have to be their most famous songs as this is a "Greatest Hits" rather than Best Of.

2. Excluding HTDAAB, any tracks that weren't on previous Best Ofs will not be included. Why would U2 suddenly compile them now?

3. Honestly, how often have tracks from Zooropa or Pop been performed live lately?

I Will Follow - Unquestionably, you have to have this track. It's one of their most well known early recordings, was a small success, and a concert staple.

New Year's Day/Sunday Bloody Sunday - WARhorses.

Pride/Where The Streets Have No Name/I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For/With Or Without You/Desire/Mysterious Ways/One - Yawn.

Beautiful Day - Only obvious ATYCLB selection.

Vertigo - Only obvious HTDAAB selection.

That brings us to 12, choose four tracks from the following:

Bad
Angel Of Harlem
All I Want Is You
Even Better Than The Real Thing
Until The End Of The World
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
Elevation
Walk On
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
City Of Blinding Lights

And.....

Not Out Of The Realm Of Probability:

Stay (Bono loves this track)
Discotheque (Huge hit)

Deluxe eddition:

Disk 1:

1. I will follow
2. Gloria
3. Sunday Bloody Sunday
4. The Unforgetable Fire
5. Still Haven't found what I am looking for
6. Where the streets have no name
7. Desire
8. The Fly
9. One
10 Mysterious Ways
11. Lemon
12. HMKMKMTM
13. I Believe (New Song)
14. Mofo
15. The saints are coming (new song)
16. Beautiful Day
17. Vertigo
18. City Of Blinding Lights

Disk 2:

1. Stories for boys (live)
2. Out of Control (live)
3. 40 (Live)
4. Bad (Live version from wide awake...)
5. Bullet The Blue Sky (live)
6. All Along the watchtower (live)
7. Even Better Then The real thing (Live)
8. Until the end of the world (live)
9. Wake up (part 2) from solome outtakes
10. Miss sarajevo (live)
11. Slug
12. PopMuzik (Live)
13. Always
14. Big girls are best
15. All because of you (alternate version)
16. Vertigo (Live)
17. The saints are coming (live)
18. I believe (Alternate version)

I'de like an album that will include atleast one song from each album. And a second disk with a whole lot of live shit mixed in with other rare songs. Yes it has vertigo X2!

My best guess (in chronological, not final tracklisting order):

Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year's Day
Pride (In the Name of Love)
With or Without You
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Where the Streets Have No Name
Desire
All I Want Is You#
One
Mysterious Ways
Numb*
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Discotheque
Beautiful Day
Elevation~
Vertigo

I personally think having a "definite" U2 album without Bad is a travesty but can't see it being included :(

# or Angel of Harlem
* or Lemon
~ or Sweetest Thing

Then we all get a huge surprise:

1. Out Of Control
2. The Electric Co. (new mix)
3. 11 O'clock Tick Tock (re-recorded)
4. Gloria
5. Two Hearts Beat As One
6. A Sort Of Homecoming
7. One Tree Hill
8. Heartland
9. God Part II
10. Acrobat
11. Lemon
12. Mofo
13. Last Night On Earth
14. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
15. Kite
16. Love And Peace Or Else
17. Pinball Wizard (with David Gilmour, Neil Finn, and Steven Wilson)
18. 404/All My Life
