Not sure where Chris Evans got his info. It must have been out of date?

I'm feeling more comfortable blabbing now that the JT tour is confirmed.

I guess Live Nation had some sort of agreement with u2, or at least an expectation of a tour in 2016. When u2 failed to deliver SOE they took a big hit. heads rolled and they were pretty upset. I'm not sure what kind of backroom arrangement they have, but I think it's safe to say their businesses rely upon one another.

So, 2017 comes and u2 know they have to tour something. But, SOE isn't ready yet, so what do they do? Tour JT.

Thematically, there was talk that SOE is about the band's rise to stardom in the late 80s, so it's not a big stretch to see them relating the new Joshua Tree tour to SOE and the new stretch of ie tour

Also, Bonnaroo confirmation! Yes! Knock em dead fellas.

Yeah, this is exactly what it smells like to me. A contractual obligation.

Always talking about looking to the future, not the past, promising a quick follow up to SOI in 2014, getting to 2017 with no follow up to speak of, only to announce a Joshua tree tour?

Their arms must be twisted into touring. And if it's in honour of JT, then SoE obviously isn't done. And if they couldn't get it done with the entirely of 2016 free, they sure as hell won't finish it with an extensive stadium tour on top of everything.

As of now, with this news, I think SoE will go the way of Songs of Ascent.

We're getting SOE. All good..

But I wonder if Live Nation was like: "you want us to handle / cough up for you to tour in 2017/18? You need to get some shows for us now.. By q2, 2017"

Frustrated the JT shows will be stadiums. I think it means it will be short run in a few select big cities, much like I+E but I would bet even more limited. I don't see them playing a stadium in Atlanta.

I would love to see it, but don't know that I am travelling for a stadium shows.

U2 actually want to quit as a band but are contractually forced by Live Nation to continue.

Yeah, sounds about right.

I'm sure the plan is still for SoE to be released... But I'm concerned that this JT tour will just delay everything further than it needs to be (as if the band needed any help pushing a release date back), to the point where the concept of the experience album and the I&E tour will become stale enough for them to prefer to start over. A fall 2017 album means a 2018 tour... That'll be 2 and a half years since I&E ended!

I guess an optimistic outcome is the tour is very brief, maybe just 5-10 shows in the US, same in Europe, and they're done by the summer to get SoE out by the fall.

But seriously, they're clearly struggling to finish SoE. Lumping a stadium tour on top of the process seems like a death sentence for it.

Are these JT shows going to be under the "i and e" name as continuation of that tour?
If it's any more than a few shows I can't see them coming back again right after once/if SOE is released to do another i and e leg.

I've actually seen One Tree Hill before, but not In God's Country. That's the one I'm looking forward to, especially if it's full band. That performance is one of my favorite moments of Rattle and Hum.

This all seems very weird, but fuck it, U2 going back on tour and new album coming in the same year, I'm not going to complain.

Life's too short and shit is too hard to complain about how my diamond shoes are too tight.

Lol and people still find some way to complain? Bono says SOE is coming next year, edge even nods in agreement yet some people still claim
All is false

I was fairly confident that there would be stadium shows this spring/summer... I was just under the assumption that they'd be for the new album.

I think this obviously means they're pushing SOE to Q4... with a tour for the Joshua Tree anniversary to keep Live Nation off their backs and fulfill their Bonnaroo commitment.

I know they didn't play Achtung Baby in full during the last half of 360 when it became the defacto AB anniversary tour, but I have to imagine that they will play Joshua Tree front to back here. Maybe even toss in a few B sides and or Rattle and Hum era songs.

I have to imagine they'll open with Streets and play it right through, take an intermission like during i/e and then come on with the rest of the songs through the second set and encore.

My question is will they try and do a special staging for the stadium shows or keep it basic and simple?

Just catching up on everything after a marathon 2 days of being at family Christmas events. All of the U2 happenings, plus George Michael's untimely death... it's been a crazy day! I hope U2 plays a Joshua Tree show close enough to me that I can attend (aka probably Chicago, but that's okay). We basically got a confirmation today that SOE is coming at some point in 2017, so I'm pretty excited about that. Seems to me we just have to get through what's left of shitty 2016 and then the machine will start up again!

Speaking of shitty 2016, time to pay tribute to George Michael by listening to the Greatest Hits!!

Still unsure how people think this 100% means late 2017 release for SOE? Even if they do special shows playing the JT right through that would never cover a stadium show surely? Seems people are being more negative with regard to the little snippet than I thought they would be?

I just hope this means the album's done, they'll carry on I+E (maybe lay on Joshua tree a bit thick in the second half) in arenas while playing some bigger Joshua tree stadium gigs separately for a quick buck....

I get people worrying this would delay SOE though. Why release your latest album then bury it promoting one from 30 years ago?

Also, hopefully they'll play Spanish Eyes and Luminous Times fairly regularly. I'm not even the biggest fan of the latter compared to, say, deep in the heart or race against time but I know it's sound brilliant live whereas those other two just wouldn't work especially in a stadium

I think billboard and these other outlets are getting their wires crossed. i dont think for a second they're gonna tour in honor of the 30th anniversary of JT. I think for a few special shows they'll celebrate it by playing it in full. But the tour is for the new record.

Again we just had confirmation the album will drop in 2017 but people still mention a delay?

I mean, of course not... but they wouldn't dilute a new album tour by also promoting it as a Joshua Tree anniversary tour (yes I know the end of 360 became an Achtung Baby anniversary tour, but that was due to injury and time)

Springsteen just toured the River album. At first he played the entire album from to back (mins you it was a double album), and then finsihed the set with non River songs... when he moved into stadiums he stopped playing the full album but instead played parts of it and just played from his massive catalog to fill out the set.

U2 don't need new songs to tour. They have enough songs in their catalog that they rarely play, if ever, that they can just play.

I know some will complain that this means they're a "dinosaur act" and shit like that, but really... fuck those people.

If they still intend on releasing SOE but just aren't ready, this is a really nice compromise. Frankly I wish they would just tour for tourings sake between album runs more often.

This is what I think. I think SOE is finished except for some tweaking/mixing, artwork etc.

I think their may be a dozen Joshua Tree shows which should be epic....although short at 11 songs. The general public won't pay top dollar for B sides/outtakes.

But a full on stadium tour will be for SOE album.

You guys are making it seem like it's cut and dry that SOE and the Joshua Tree celebratory shows are completely separate. There's no reason that they both can't go on during the same time. I still think they will release SOE in February or March. Waiting until the end of the year after hearing about this album for so long just doesn't make sense.
