Oh lord, what have i become?
The erection in the sky was always second to none.
What once was magnificent slowly fades away
barely casting a shadow in the middle of the day.

I thought i created the perfect sound
to accompany the depths of my sorrow.
Yet the world has forgotten me
as i've nothing to borrow.

A lonely trumpet rusting in the desert sand like a cactus in the needle
Token battle cries raged a long time before you thought you knew me.

Love is missing a vital gasket
so we built love a nest.
As we gaze upon the high mountain
a beating heart sits atop it's crest.

Deep in the bowels
bloodstains on the carpet
such a mess made in stone
like wine flowing from the dam
a place built from dust and bone

Chasing finger prints into thin air
magic butterfly catches a ray.
Cosmic darkness into morning sun.
The mist speaks of those who've risen
from the monsters that you run.

And this would mean whatever arrangement they play live could change, necessitating a few weeks of rehearsal.

Has anyone made the connection of prominent keys parts in The Best Thing and Terry's extended rehearsal with U2?

If sillywhite has the final mix, and terry is rehearsing with them, it could all be happening right now.

Single this Friday?

I don't really know if it's coming this Friday, But I fear that it's not going to have to do with SoE like Invisible did with SoI. I hope that they release a single with an announcement about the album and tour. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one... :hmm:

There is no reason whatsoever to suggest it will be standalone. Adam has mentioned SOE in Instagram clips, Bono and Adam gave comments a month and a half ago. Since then NOTHING. It has all been speculation on this board.

It's just that a couple of posters who know people 'in the know' have heard that the band has/is getting cold feet. I think there was mention of the tour being pushed back (again), beyond next spring, indicating a big delay.

Yeah, that jibes with the info I had heard last week too - also, that it's really one band member with the cold feet, the other three had signed off on the final product.

I'm willing to wager my left nut that the single that Lillywhite is referring to is The Best Thing, which, sadly, may be titled You're the Best Thing (About Me)

Pretty sure we can bank on it

I am an audio engineer, not a working pro at the moment, but

Mixing can involve many aspects. First is creating space in the song. depending on panning and eq'ing and effects, you can create a vastly different atmosphere of a song.
Also, he will have access to dozens of vocal takes, guitar takes, bass lines, etc.. that can be edited and "comped" to create very different final outcomes of the song itself.
Then effects that can be used in thousands of different ways, each one setting the song apart from another mix...

Thanks for the explanation!

I completely see how mixing can change the atmosphere of the song, even without involving the band or requiring re-writing or re-recording.

@Dan Smee, re: Terry Lawless + rehearsals, I'd guess that the key melodies/sounds are already down and the mixing is deciding on more nuanced parts than that? If that's the case, rehearsals may be largely unaffected by a new mix. Or maybe they're rehearsing several different versions of the same song :hmm:

Hold yer horses..appreciate the shout out here but this jumped out at me. It's not definitively clear to me that The Best Thing is what Lilywhite is mixing for U2. Not by a long shot, although it seems possible.

Hmm, well my logic was just that TBT is the only track put forward that we know of (beach clip, remix performed live), and has a very radio-friendly nature. Made me think it's a shoe-in for lead single (and Lillywhite only seems to be working on the lead single, from what we heard today?)

Unless there are some other songs floating around :hmm:

Larry Fucking Mullen, Jr.

(i bet this means that the album is "experimental")

(or that the songs actually aren't very good)

Interesting. That is probably salvageable

Agreed. That sounds far more promising. Hopefully entails a small enough amount of 'fixing' to prevent an album delay.

If i had to guess, i'd say the one with the cold feet is Edge - isn't he the one most prone to tinkering up until release (giggidy)?

I didn't get the idea that he was working on the lead single at all. Of course on the other hand it's entirely probable and would make sense. But I'm trying to just go by the exact facts of what was said, rather than fill in the blanks.

Unless there are other songs floating around..ya mean, like an album's worth?

I thought he did mention the single mix in Singapore

 Yeah, I get you. I mean, it's entirely possible he's working on any one of 11 tracks on the album. But I just assumed if they're getting him to mix one track in particular, at this point in time, it would be the lead song. But that's of course not strictly necessary.

If it's not the lead single he's working on, then maybe the single is done, and could be released more imminently!

Larry or Edge having the cold feet

Larry because as Irvine put it, it's either a bit out there....or the songs just aren't good.

Edge because he cannot let a song go.

yeah, my money is on Edge actually.

If it's Edge, and it's about him not being able to let the song go, then that's the most promising option. To me it implies less that they're unhappy/unconfident in the material, and more that he just wants to take advantage of all the time he can before it absolutely has to be released. He/the band do that for every album, and as he said, "u2 albums don't get finished, they just get released".

Just let the song go Edge, in a year noone outside of us will even care what it sounds like (ok, not even in a year).

So Bono's at an international aid event in Canada over the weekend. I'd imagine he'd want to be free to promote the new single, and not have any competing/distracting news from the aid event (if he plays a prominent, public part in it) when it's eventually released.

So I'm guessing we won't get a single on friday, or over the weekend.

Maybe monday is more likely.
